This book encompasses both medical and technical developments and recent achievements. Here, the authors cover the field of application from the anterior to the posterior ocular segments (Part I) and present a comprehensive review on the development of OCT. Important developments towards?? clinical applications are covered in Part II, ranging from the adaptive optics to the integration on a slit-lamp, and passing through new structural?? and functional information extraction from OCT data. The book is intended to be informative, coherent and comprehensive for both the medical and technical communities and aims at easing the communication between the two fields and bridging the gap between the two scientific communities

Abstract NoteArtificial sight is a frontier area of modern ophthalmology combining the multidisciplinary skills of surgical ophthalmology, biomedical engineering, biological physics, and psychophysical testing. Many scientific, engineering, and surgical challenges must be surmounted before widespread practical applications can be realized. The goal of Artificial Sight is to summarize the state-of-the-art research in this exciting area, and to describe some of the current approaches and initiatives that may help patients in a clinical setting. The Editors are active researchers in the fields of artificial sight, biomedical engineering and biological physics. They have received numerous professional awards and recognition for their work. The artificial sight team at the Doheny Eye Institute, led by Dr. Mark Humayun, is a world leader in this area of biomedical engineering and clinical research. Key Features Introduces and assesses the state of the art for a broad audience of biomedical engineers, biophysicists, and clinical researchers Describes advances in microelectronics, microfabrication, surgical implantation, and psychophysical testing of visual prostheses Outlines the promise of artificial sight and the challenges that must be met

TitleOptical Coherence Tomography : Technology and Applications
Author(s)Drexler, Wolfgang;Fujimoto, James G
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2015.
Description1441 illus., 1104 illus. in color. eReference : online resource
Abstract NoteOptical coherence tomography (OCT) is the optical analog of ultrasound imaging and is a powerful imaging technique that enables non-invasive, in vivo, high resolution, cross-sectional imaging in biological tissue.?? Between 30 to 40 Million OCT imaging procedures are performed per year in ophthalmology.?? The overall market is estimated at more than 0.5 Billion USD.?? A new generation OCT technology??was developed, dramatically increasing resolution and speed, achieving in vivo optical biopsy, i.e. the visualization of tissue architectural morphology in situ and in real time.?? Functional extensions of OCT technology enable non-invasive, depth resolved functional assessment and imaging of tissue.?? The book introduces OCT technology and applications not only from an optical and technological viewpoint, but also from the biomedical and clinical perspective.??This second edition is widely extended and covers significantly??more topics??then the first edition of this book. The chapters are written leading international research groups, in a style comprehensible to a broad audience.?? It will be of interest not only to physicists, scientists and engineers, but also to biomedical and clinical researchers from different medical specialties

TitleOptics in Biomedical Sciences : Proceedings of the International Conference, Graz, Austria, September 7???11, 1981
Author(s)Bally, G.v;Greguss, P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1982.
DescriptionX, 274 p. 272 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteAs there recently has been increased interest in the applications of optical techniques in biomedical research and clinical diagnostics, it seemed to be appropriate to organize a comprehensive international conference on optics in medicine and biology. Such a broad international meeting had not been held before. An international conference on Optics in Biomedical Sciences was organized and took place in Graz, Austria, September 7th through 11th, 1981, sponsored by the International Commission for Optics (ICO) in co?? operation with the European Optical Committee, the Austrian Association on Biomedical Engineering, and the German Society for Applied Optics. It seemed timely to establish a forum for communication among specialists on an international level. This book, presenting the papers given at this conference, demonstrates the state of the art of this increasingly expanding field of applications of optics. Furthermore, the interested reader will find an extended list of references in the various contributions. This book helps to overcome the difficulty, inherent in all interdisciplinary research fields, of gathering widely scattered literature. The contributions to this book are focussed on the following topics: Biomedical applications of - unconventional imaging in microscopy, - image processing, - interferometry and holography, - speckle-techniques and spectroscopy, - optometry, and - Moire methods. In addition, the brilliant and humorous closing remarks of Nils Abramson from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, have been included

TitleAdvances in Diagnostic Visual Optics : Proceedings of the Second International Symposium, Tucson, Arizona, October 23???25, 1982
Author(s)Breinin, G. M;Siegel, I. M
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1983.
DescriptionIX, 250 p. 73 illus., 5 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteOpening Remarks of the President, 2nd ISVO, Professor G.M. Breinin, M.D. The study of visual processes is surely unique as a clinical specialty, in?? corporating the disciplines of physics, chemistry, physiology, and psycho?? logy. Diagnosing and correcting disorders of the visual system in these last two decades of the 20th century has brought all of us into close prox?? imity with computer sciences, laser technology, the marvels of electronic microcircuitry, and the impressive developments in optical materials. Dur?? ing the course of this meeting we shall be hearing about how these different technologies can interact with one another, and we shall discover that such interaction may produce new diagnostic tools and new optical devices. We shall also learn that the optical qualities of the eye change during life, producing subtle and complex alterations in vision. On behalf of the members and organizing committee of the American Commit?? tee on Optics and Visual Physiology and our co-sponsoring organization, the Optical Society of America, I welcome you to this second symposium on visual optics. The first symposium took place in Japan in 1978 and, like the pres?? ent one, was a satellite meeting of the International Congress of Ophthal?? mology. The third symposium in this series will take place in Italy in 1986 as part of the next session of the International Congress of Ophthalmology
