Abstract NoteThis work focuses on the evolution of single-particle structure in a region of the nuclear chart rich with exotic nuclear structure. The author has led the analysis of the 28Mg(d,p)29Mg reaction, measured with the ISOLDE Solenoidal Spectrometer (ISS) at the ISOLDE facility, CERN. This was the first measurement made using this device and the first time that a solenoidal spectrometer has been used at an ISOL radioactive beam facility. Significant attention is paid to optimizing methods of analysing direct nuclear reactions taking place in solenoidal fields and, as part of this, the author has developed his own analysis codes and simulations. The thesis gives an extremely comprehensive and well-written description of this novel system and provides a canonical reference for ISS that will be of great use to researchers and students, as well as presenting some significant scientific results focused on the N=20 "island of inversion", a region of nuclides of great current interest in nuclear physics.

Abstract NoteThis thesis presents two significant results in the field of precision measurements in low-energy nuclear physics. Firstly, it presents a precise half-life determination of 11C, leading to the most precise ft-value for a beta decay transition between mirror nuclides, an important advance in the testing of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. Secondly, it describes a high-precision mass measurement of 56Cu, a critical nucleus for determining the path of the astrophysical rapid-proton capture process, performed by the author using the LEBIT Penning trap at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. This new measurement resolves discrepancies in previously-reported calculated mass excesses. In addition, the thesis also presents the construction and testing of a radio-frequency quadrupole cooler and buncher that will be part of the future N = 126 factory at Argonne National Laboratory aimed at producing nuclei of interest for the astrophysical rapid-neutron capture process for the first time

Abstract NoteNanoscale miniaturization and femtosecond laser-pulse spectroscopy require a quantum mechanical description of the carrier kinetics that goes beyond the conventional Boltzmann theory. On these extremely short length and time scales the electrons behave like partially coherent waves. This monograph deals with quantum kinetics for transport in low-dimensional microstructures and for ultra-short laser pulse spectroscopy. The nonequilibrium Green function theory is described and used for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equations. Numerical methods for the solution of the retarded quantum kinetic equations are discussed and results are presented for high-field transport and for mesoscopic transport phenomena. Quantum beats, polarization decay, and non-Markovian behaviour are treated for femtosecond spectroscopy on a microscopic basis. Since the publishing of the first edition in 1996 the nonequilibrium Green function technique has been applied to a large number of new research topics, and the revised edition introduces the reader to some of these areas, such as molecular electronics, noise calculations, build-up of screening and polaron correlations, and non-Markovian relaxation, among others. Connection to recent experiments is made, and it is emphasized how the quantum kinetic theory is essential in their interpretation
