TitleEinstein and Heisenberg : The Controversy Over Quantum Physics
Author(s)Kleinknecht, Konrad
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXI, 185 p. 43 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis is a fascinating account of two great scientists of the 20th century: Einstein and Heisenberg, discoverers, respectively, of the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. It connects the history of modern physics to the life stories of these two extraordinary physicists. These discoveries laid the foundation of modern physics, without which our digitized world of computers, satellites, and innovative materials would not be possible. This book also describes in comprehensible terms the complicated science underlying the two discoveries. The twin biography highlights the parallels and differences of these two luminaries, showing how their work shaped the 20th century into the century of physics

TitleReality and Its Order
Author(s)Heisenberg, Werner;Kleinknecht, Konrad
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionIX, 148 p. 2 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteAvailable here for the first time in English, "Reality and Its Order" is a remarkable philosophical text by Werner Heisenberg, the father of quantum mechanics and one of the leading scientists of the 20th century. Written during the wartime years and initially distributed only to his family and trusted friends, the essay describes Heisenberg???s philosophical view of how we understand the natural world and our role within it. In this volume, the essay is introduced by the physicist Helmut Rechenberg and annotated by the science historian Ernst Peter Fischer. The content, particularly within its historical context, will be of great interest to many physicists, philosophers and historians of science

TitleUncovering CP Violation : Experimental Clarification in the Neutral K Meson and B Meson Systems
Author(s)Kleinknecht, Konrad
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003.
DescriptionXI, 144 p : online resource
Abstract NoteUncovering CP Violation deals with one of the crucial ingredients necessary to create the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. There is one force in nature which acts differently on matter and antimatter. This phenomenon was discovered in decays of neutral K mesons in 1964. In a long series of ever refined experiments between 1964 and 2001, it was shown that this force emerges as a part of the weak interaction between quarks ("direct CP violation"). It is due to flavor mixing of three quark families. This picture was confirmed by experiments on neutral B mesons, which also demonstrated CP violation in 2001. The book describes the experiments that uncovered the nature of CP violation and the phenomenology describing CP violation
