TitleThe Center, Bulge, and Disk of the Milky Way
Author(s)Blitz, Leo
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1992.
DescriptionIX, 167 p : online resource
Abstract NoteOur view of our Galaxy has recently been undergoing an increasing divergence from the traditional standpoint. In this book ten authors discuss in eight chapters how the conceptions of the Milky Way have moved in new directions. Starting with the inner parsec and the Center of the Galaxy, the book gradually moves on to the bulge and its relation to the globular clusters and to the disk, of which the presence of a bar is argued. A new look on the HI distribution in the disk, a synthesis of molecular line surveys and the study of stellar populations are discussed in the last three chapters

TitleUnsolved Problems of the Milky Way
Author(s)Blitz, Leo;Teuben, Peter
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1996.
DescriptionXXI, 725 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAlthough the Milky Way is the most studied and best understood galactic system, there are many fundamental questions about our Galaxy that remain unanswered. This book concentrates on those questions which have the widest applicability in all of astrophysics, and for which answers are most likely to be forthcoming in the next few years. Is the Milky Way a barred spiral, and if so, what are its properties? Is the disk of the Milky Way axisymmetric and what does the answer tell us about its dynamical history? Is there a black hole at the center of the Galaxy? How far does the Galaxy extend? How much dark matter is there in the Milky Way system? And more

TitleThe Outer Galaxy : Proceedings of a Symposium Held in Honor of Frank J.Kerr at the University of Maryland, College Park, May 28???29, 1987
Author(s)Blitz, Leo;Lockman, Felix J
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1988.
DescriptionIX, 291 p. 83 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe book summarizes research into the fundamental properties of the outer Milky Way (including its mass, scale and rotation properties) and covers topics such as spiral structure, the interstellar medium, star formation, satellites of the Milky Way and the outer parts of some nearby galaxies. It contains new work on the outer rotation curve of the Milky Way, first results of a new low frequency galactic disk survey, new results on the scale of the Galaxy (the distance of the Sun from the center and the relation of the disk of the Milky Way to the halo). This is the first volume specifically dedicated to outer galaxy research. Professional astronomers and astrophysicists as well as graduate students will welcome this book as a guide in understanding the outer parts of the Milky Way and also other galaxies
