TitleX-ray polarimetry: A new window in astrophysics: Proceedings of the Coming of age of X-ray polarimetry held in Rome at the Centre for American Studies in Via Caetani 32, on 27 - 30 April 2009
Author(s)Ronaldo Bellazzini (Ed.);Enrico Costa (Ed.);Giorgio Matt (Ed.);Gianpiero Tagliaferri (Ed.)
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2010.
Descriptionxxi, 362p.
Abstract NoteDue to the advent of a new generation of detectors, X-ray polarimetry promises to join X-ray imaging, spectroscopy and timing as one of the main observational techniques in high energy astrophysics. This has renewed interest in the field, and indeed several polarimetric missions have recently been proposed. This volume provides a complete and up-to-date view of the subject for researchers in astrophysics. The contributors discuss the present status and perspectives of instruments, review current theoretical models, and examine future missions. As well as detailed papers, the book contains broad reviews that can be easily understood by astrophysicists new to the field.

TitleFrontiers of astrophysics: A celebration of NRAO'S 50 th anniversary: Proceedings of a symposium held at National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA 18 - 21 June 2007
Author(s)Alan H. Bridle (ed.);James J. Condon (ed.);Gareth C. Hunt (ed.)
PublicationSan Francisco, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2008.
Descriptionxx, 390p.
Series(Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series)
Abstract NoteIn celebration of its 50th anniversary, the NRAO hosted a science symposium highlighting the most important questions that can be addressed by astronomers. The universe is a unique laboratory yielding historical data on the creation of the universe, the formation of the first stars and galaxies, the production of the elements, the assembly of molecules and the building blocks of life in interstellar space, how and where planets form, and possible changes in fundamental physical constants on cosmological time scales. This “laboratory” contains black holes, neutron stars, and gravitational radiation for studying extreme gravity and extremely dense matter. It is filled with the mysterious dark energy and dark matter that control the expansion and destiny of the universe, and whole nature is a critical unsolved problem for physics. This symposium brought together leading scientists to address the most important questions in these areas, the major contributions to astronomy enabled by NRAO instruments—past, present, and future—and to suggest future directions for research involving radio observations and techniques.

TitleNumerical modeling of space plasma flows: Astronum-2007: Proceedings of the 2nd International conference held at hotel Concorde Montparnasse, Paris, France 10 - 15 June 2007
Author(s)Nikolai V. Pogorelov (ed.);Edouard Audit (ed.);Gary P. Zank
PublicationSan Francisco, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2008.
Descriptionxv, 332p.
Abstract NoteThis volume is based on talks given at ASTRONUM-2007. This conference is the second in a series of international conferences organized by the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics of the University of California at Riverside and the Laboratory for Research of the Fundamental Laws of the Universe of the French Commissariat of Atomic Energy. The conference subjects include turbulence and cosmic ray transport, astrophysical flows, space plasma flows, kinetic and hybrid simulations, numerical methods, algorithms, and frameworks, and data handling and visualization. All of these are of great importance for scientists investigating solar structure, the heliosphere, the Sun-Earth connection, and various astrophysical phenomena. The problems discussed at the conference involved significantly different scales, regions, or particle populations for which several sets of defining equations or concepts are necessary to understand the physical system in its entirety. This book will be of interest to specialists in applied mathematics, astrophysics, space physics, and computer science who apply novel numerical algorithms to the contemporary problems in these fields. Graduate students will find it a useful reference of the fundamental approaches to solving the fluid dynamics and Boltzmann equations governing space plasma flows.
