TitleFilter Banks and Audio Coding : Compressing Audio Signals Using Python
Author(s)Schuller, Gerald
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXI, 197 p. 72 illus., 49 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook presents the fundamentals of audio coding, used to compress audio and music signals, using Python programs both as examples to illustrate the principles and for experiments for the reader. Together, these programs then form complete audio coders. The author starts with basic knowledge of digital signal processing (sampling, filtering) to give a thorough introduction to filter banks as used in audio coding, and their design methods. He then continues with the next core component, which are psycho-acoustic models. The author finally shows how to design and implement them. Lastly, the author goes on to describe components for more specialized coders, like the Integer-to-Integer MDCT filter bank, and predictive coding for lossless and low delay coding. Included are Python program examples for each section, which illustrate the principles and provide the tools for experiments. Comprehensively explains the fundamentals of filter banks and audio coding; Provides Python examples for each principle so that completed audio coders are obtained in the language; Includes a suite of classroom materials including exercises, experiments, and examples

Author(s)Vorl??nder, Michael
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXVIII, 365 p. 251 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteAuralization is the technique of creation and reproduction of sound on the basis of computer data. With this tool it is possible to predict the character of sound signals which are generated at the source and modified by reinforcement, propagation and transmission in systems such as rooms, buildings, vehicles or other technical devices. This book is organized as a comprehensive collection of the basics of sound and vibration, acoustic modelling, simulation, signal processing and audio reproduction. With some mathematical prerequisites, the readers will be able to follow the main strategy of auralization easily and work out their own implementations of auralization in various fields of application in architectural acoustics, acoustic engineering, sound design and virtual reality. For readers interested in basic research, the technique of auralization may be useful to create sound stimuli for specific investigations in linguistic, medical, neurological and psychological research, and in the field of human-machine interaction

TitleComputer Speech : Recognition, Compression, Synthesis
Author(s)Schroeder, Manfred R
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2004.
DescriptionXXXIV, 379 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe first edition having been sold out, gives me a welcome opportunity to augment this volume by some recent applications of speech research. A new chapter, by Holger Quast, treats speech dialogue systems and natural lan?? guage processing. Dictation programs for word processors, voice dialing for mobile phones, and dialogue systems for air travel reservations, automated banking, and translation over the telephone are at the forefront of human-machine inter?? faces. Spoken language dialogue systems are also invaluable for the physically handicapped. For researchers new to the field, the new chapter (pp. 67-106) provides an overview of fundamental linguistic concepts from phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, gramm ars and knowedge representation. Symbolic methodology, such as Norman Chomsky's traditional hierarchy of formal languages is layed out as are statistical approaches to analyze text. Proven tools of language processing are covered in detail, including finite?? state automata, Zipf's law, trees annd parsers. The second part of the new chapter introduces the building blocks of state-of-the-art dialogue systems

TitleVoice and Speech Quality Perception : Assessment and Evaluation
Author(s)Jekosch, Ute
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2005.
DescriptionX, 210 p : online resource
Abstract NoteFoundations of Voice and Speech Quality Perception starts out with the fundamental question of: "How do listeners perceive voice and speech quality and how can these processes be modeled?" Any quantitative answers require measurements. This is natural for physical quantities but harder to imagine for perceptual measurands. This book approaches the problem by actually identifying major perceptual dimensions of voice and speech quality perception, defining units wherever possible and offering paradigms to position these dimensions into a structural skeleton of perceptual speech and voice quality. The emphasis is placed on voice and speech quality assessment of systems in artificial scenarios. Many scientific fields are involved. This book bridges the gap between two quite diverse fields, engineering and humanities, and establishes the new research area of Voice and Speech Quality Perception

Author(s)Qudrat-Ullah, Hassan
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXX, 252 p. 69 illus., 59 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book describes interactive learning environments (ILEs) and their underlying concepts. It explains how ILEs can be used to improve the decision-making process and how these improvements can be empirically verified. The objective of this book is to enhance our understanding of and to gain insights into the process by which human facilitated ILEs are effectively designed and used in improving users??? decision making in complex, dynamic tasks. This book is divided into four major parts. Part I serves as an introduction to the importance and complexity of decision making in dynamic tasks. Part II provides background material, drawing upon relevant literature, for the development of an integrated process model on the effectiveness of human facilitated ILEs in improving decision making in dynamic tasks. Part III focuses on the design, development, and application of FishBankILE in laboratory experiments to gather empirical evidence for the validity of the process model. Finally, part IV presents a comprehensive analysis of the gathered data to illustrate the lessons to be learned. Better Decision Making in Complex, Dynamic Tasks will be useful for managers and practitioners, researchers, and students of dynamic decision making. Praise for Better Decision Making in Complex, Dynamic Tasks: "...rich in content, full with unique insights, and a self-sufficient volume on the design, development and application of system dynamics based simulations that are implemented as interactive learning environments (ILEs). Practitioners and researchers interested in seeking evidence for the efficacy of ILEs??? use in decision-making will find this book a must read." PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2014.
DescriptionXIV, 243 p. 64 illus., 61 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe use of contextually aware, pervasive, distributed computing, and sensor networks to bridge the gap between the physical and online worlds is the basis of mobile social networking. This book shows how applications can be built to provide mobile social networking, the research issues that need to be solved to enable this vision, and how mobile social networking can be used to provide computational intelligence that will improve daily life. With contributions from the fields of sociology, computer science, human-computer interaction and design, this book demonstrates how mobile social networks can be inferred from users' physical interactions both with the environment and with others, as well as how users behave around them and how their behavior differs on mobile vs. traditional online social networks

TitlePhenomena Induced by Intermolecular Interactions
Author(s)Birnbaum, G
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1985.
DescriptionXIV, 792 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is concerned with recent experimental and theoretical work dealing with phenomena created by the transient dipoles and polarizabilities produced by intermolecular interactions. The for?? mer produce absorption from the microwave to the optical regions of the spectrum and the latter produce Rayleigh and Raman scattering; such absorption and scattering would be absent without collisions. Static properties, such as dielectric constant, refractive index, and Kerr effect, also exhibit the effects of induced dipoles and polarizabilities. The first observation of an infrared absorption spectrum pro?? duced by the collisions of molecules which ordinarily do not have an allowed dipole transition was reported in 1949 (Crawford, Welsh, and Locke). The first observation of depolarized Rayleigh spectra due to collisions in atomic gases appeared in 1968 (McTague and Birnbaum). However, it was not until 1977 that the first conference dealing with collision-induced phenomena was organized by J. D. Poll at the University of Guelph. This conference was mainly concerned with studies of collision-induced absorption in gases. Light scat?? tering received more attention at the second meeting of the colli?? sion-induced community in 1978, at the E. Fermi Summer School on "Intermolecular Spectroscopy and Dynamical Properties of Dense Sys?? tems," organized by J. Van Kranendonk. However, the emphasis was still on collision-induced absorption in compressed gases, although some work on liquids, solid H , and related subjects such as ro?? 2 tational relaxation was included. The third induced phenomena con?? ference, organized by F
