TitleMeasurement across the Sciences : Developing a Shared Concept System for Measurement
Author(s)Mari, Luca;Wilson, Mark;Maul, Andrew
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXXXV, 279 p. 72 illus., 64 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book proposes a conceptual framework for understanding measurement across a broad range of scientific fields and areas of application, such as physics, engineering, education, and psychology. The authors, who themselves span these disciplines, argue that the justification of the public trust attributed to measurement results can in principle apply identically to both physical and psychosocial properties. They further argue that the lack of a common conceptualization of measurement hampers interdisciplinary communication and limits the ability to share knowledge. They advance their views by first surveying the conceptual history of the philosophy of measurement and arguing that classical, operationalist and representational perspectives on measurement each make important contributions but also each have important shortcomings. A synthesis is then offered as the foundation for a new conceptual framework. The authors describe how the framework, which operates as a shared concept system, supports understanding measurement???s work in different domains, using examples in the physical and human sciences. They consider connections and consequences with respect to causality, objectivity, and intersubjectivity, among other topics, and how measurement science concepts and issues are construed across these disciplines and settings. They also address contemporary issues and controversies within measurement in the light of the framework, including operationalism, definitional uncertainty, and the relations between measurement and computation. The book concludes with a justification for the basic claim that measurement is an empirical and informational process that produces explicitly justifiable information. Researchers and academics across a wide range of disciplines including biological, physical, social and behavioral scientists, as well as specialists in measurement and philosophy will appreciate the work???s fresh and provocative approach to the field at a time when sound measurements of complex scientific systems are increasingly essential to solving critical global problems

TitleA Passion for Space : Adventures of a Pioneering Female NASA Flight Controller
Author(s)Dyson, Marianne J
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXVI, 381 p. 97 illus., 72 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteMarianne J. Dyson recounts for us a time when women were making the first inroads into space flight control, a previously male-dominated profession. The story begins with the inspiration of the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon and follows the challenges of pursuing a science career as a woman in the 70s and 80s, when it was far from an easy path. Dyson relates the first five space shuttle flights from the personal perspective of mission planning and operations in Houston at the Johnson Space Center, based almost exclusively on original sources such as journals and NASA weekly activity reports. The book???s historical details about astronaut and flight controller training exemplify both the humorous and serious aspects of space operations up through the Challenger disaster, including the almost unknown fire in Mission Control during STS-5 that nearly caused an emergency entry of the shuttle. From an insider with a unique perspective and credentials to match, this a must-read for anyone interested in the workings of NASA during one of its busiest and defining times, and the challenges faced by women pursuing scientific careers

TitleSpaceports Around the World, A Global Growth Industry
Author(s)Seedhouse, Erik
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionX, 130 p. 69 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis brief presents a concise description of the existing spaceport market, the technologies being tested and developed at them, and the private companies that are making them possible. While NASA has its own plan for the future of space exploration, one that includes a new shuttle, an interplanetary spacecraft, and astronauts going to Mars, many people believe that the real future of space exploration is currently centered around dozens of commercial spaceports, financed by entrepreneurs inspired not only by profit but by the dream of creating a new space age, one not limited by bureaucracies or by budget allocations. Commercial spaceports in Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia and Alaska, as well as in countries like Cura??ao and Sweden, are becoming home to dozens of private aerospace companies and provide a place where cutting-edge technology can be developed, tested and launched into space. Based on original interviews with principles at the various companies involved and on-site observations at the Mojave Air and Space Port, the author traces the early days of the spaceport movement and outlines what lies ahead.

Abstract NoteThis book describes prominent technological achievements within a very successful space science mission: the Herschel space observatory. Focusing on the various processes of innovation it offers an analysis and discussion of the social, technological and scientific context of the mission that paved the way to its development. It addresses the key question raised by these processes in our modern society, i.e.: how knowledge management of innovation set the conditions for inventing the future? In that respect the book is based on a transdisciplinary analysis of the programmatic complexity of Herschel, with inputs from space scientists, managers, philosophers, and engineers. This book is addressed to decision makers, not only in space science, but also in other industries and sciences using or building large machines. It is also addressed to space engineers and scientists as well as students in science and management

TitleA Scenario for Interstellar Exploration and Its Financing
Author(s)Bignami, Giovanni F;Sommariva, Andrea
PublicationMilano, Springer Milan, 2013.
DescriptionVIII, 101 p. 32 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book develops a credible scenario for interstellar exploration and colonization. In so doing, it examines: ??? the present situation and prospects for interstellar exploration technologies; ??? where to go: the search for habitable planets; ??? the motivations for space travel and colonization; ??? the financial mechanisms required to fund such enterprises. The final section of the book analyzes the uncertainties surrounding the presented scenario. The purpose of building a scenario is not only to pinpoint future events but also to highlight the uncertainties that may propel the future in different directions. Interstellar travel and colonization requires a civilization in which human beings see themselves as inhabitants of a single planet and in which global governance of these processes is conducted on a cooperative basis. The key question is, then, whether our present civilization is ready for such an endeavor, reflecting the fact that the critical uncertainties are political and cultural in nature. It is written in such a way as to allow the non-professional reader to become part of the debate on the future of space programs

TitleThree Dimensional Creativity : Three Navigations to Extend our Thoughts
Author(s)Lee, Kwang Hyung
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2014.
DescriptionX, 87 p. 94 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIs creativity something that we are simply born with and cannot hone with effort? Some say that creativity cannot be cultivated. Is it true? In general, our thinking sticks to reality unless there is any external stimulation. With our thinking fixed on a certain situation, it becomes difficult to come up with a fresh idea. In this regard, three questions are suggested: (1) Question of Time: When a problem arises, question yourself on a time axis first of all. How would the matter be handled 10 or 20 years from now? (2) Question of Space: Ask yourself some questions on its spatial elements. How would the matter be handled in Saudi Arabia or in China? (3) Question of Field: Apply the given problem in a variety of fields. How would the matter be handled in the field of music or electronic engineering? The three questions suggested here are given on the three axes: time, space, and field, and this book deals with theoretical and practical aspects on the topics. In this way it is a unique book about the systematic method of developing creativity, which will have appeal to researchers and students in multidisciplinary fields from neuroscience to physics, and engineering and computer science, as well as a general public

DescriptionXIX, 182 p. 66 illus., 59 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteHere for the first time??you can read: how a space technology start-up??is pioneering work on expandable space station??modules how Robert Bigelow licensed the??TransHab idea??from NASA, and how his company developed the technology for more than a decade how, very soon, a Bigelow expandable module will be docked with the International Space Station. At the core of Bigelow's plan??is the inflatable module technology. Tougher and more durable than their rigid counterparts, these inflatable modules are perfectly suited for use in the space, where Bigelow plans to link them together to form commercial space stations. This book describes how this new breed of space stations will be built and how the link between Bigelow Aerospace, NASA and private companies can lead to a new economy???a space economy. Finally, the book touches on Bigelow's aspirations beyond low Earth orbit, plans that include the landing of a base on the lunar surface and the prospect of missions to Mars
