TitleMulti-dimensional Optical Storage
Author(s)Xu, Duanyi
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Singapore, 2016.
DescriptionXIX, 679 p. 565 illus., 92 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents principles and applications to expand the storage space from 2-D to 3-D and even multi-D, including gray scale, color (light with different wavelength), polarization and coherence of light. These actualize the improvements of density, capacity and data transfer rate for optical data storage. Moreover, the applied implementation technologies to make mass data storage devices are described systematically. Some new mediums, which have linear absorption characteristics for different wavelength and intensity to light with high sensitivity, are introduced for multi-wavelength and multi-level optical storage. This book can serve as a useful reference for researchers, engineers, graduate and undergraduate students in material science, information science and optics.

TitleEnergy-Efficient VCSELs for Optical Interconnects
Author(s)Moser, Philip
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXV, 182 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis dissertation provides the first systematic analysis of the dynamic energy efficiency of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for optical interconnects, a key technology to address the pressing ecological and economic issues of the exponentially growing energy consumption in data centers. Energy-efficient data communication is one of the most important ???elds in ???Green Photonics??? enabling higher bit rates at signi???cantly reduced energy consumption per bit. In this thesis the static and dynamic properties of GaAs-based oxide-confined VCSELs emitting at 850 nm and 980 nm are analyzed and general rules for achieving energy-efficient data transmission using VCSELs at any wavelength are derived. These rules are verified in data transmission experiments leading to record energy-efficient data transmission across a wide range of multimode optical fiber distances and at high temperatures up to 85??C. Important trade-offs between energy efficiency, temperature stability, modulation bandwidth, low current-density operation and other VCSEL properties are revealed and discussed

TitleBroad Bandwidth and High Dimensional Quantum Memory Based on Atomic Ensembles
Author(s)Ding, Dong-Sheng
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Singapore, 2018.
DescriptionXXII, 122 p. 49 illus., 42 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis thesis presents an experimental study of quantum memory based on cold atomic ensembles and discusses photonic entanglement. It mainly focuses on experimental research on storing orbital angular momentum, and introduces readers to methods for storing a single photon carried by an image or an entanglement of spatial modes. The thesis also discusses the storage of photonic entanglement using the Raman scheme as a step toward implementing high-bandwidth quantum memory. The storage of photonic entanglement is central to achieving long-distance quantum communication based on quantum repeaters and scalable linear optical quantum computation. Addressing this key issue, the findings presented in the thesis are very promising with regard to future high-speed and high-capacity quantum communications

TitleAstronomical Image and Data Analysis
Author(s)Starck, J.-L;Murtagh, F
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2006.
DescriptionXIV, 338 p : online resource
Abstract NoteWith information and scale as central themes, this comprehensive survey explains how to handle real problems in astronomical data analysis using a modern arsenal of powerful techniques. It treats those innovative methods of image, signal, and data processing that are proving to be both effective and widely relevant. The authors are leaders in this rapidly developing field and draw upon decades of experience. They have been playing leading roles in international projects such as the Virtual Observatory and the Grid. The book addresses not only students and professional astronomers and astrophysicists, but also serious amateur astronomers and specialists in earth observation, medical imaging, and data mining. The coverage includes chapters or appendices on: detection and filtering; image compression; multichannel, multiscale, and catalog data analytical methods; wavelets transforms, Picard iteration, and software tools. This second edition of Starck and Murtagh's highly appreciated reference again deals with topics that are at or beyond the state of the art. It presents material which is more algorithmically oriented than most alternatives and broaches new areas like ridgelet and curvelet transforms. Throughout the book various additions and updates have been made

TitleThe Herschel Objects and How to Observe Them
Author(s)Mullaney, James
PublicationNew York, NY, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer New York, 2007.
DescriptionXVI, 167 p : online resource
Abstract NoteDeep-sky observers are always on the lookout for new observing challenges. The Herschel Objects, and How to Observe them offers an exciting opportunity to retrace the footsteps of Sir William Herschel, discoverer of Uranus and arguably the greatest visual observer and celestial explorer that ever lived! Following a biography of Herschel that details his life and the telescopes he used, this practical observer???s guide lists all the most impressive of Herschel???s star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. More than 600 of the brightest of the objects that Herschel observed are covered, and there are detailed descriptions and images of almost 200 of the very best Herschel objects for amateur astronomers

TitleFuture Professional Communication in Astronomy II
Author(s)Accomazzi, Alberto
PublicationNew York, NY, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer New York, 2011.
DescriptionXX, 148 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe present volume gathers together the talks presented at the colloquim "Future Professional Communication II (FPCA-II)," held at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (Cambridge, MA) on 13-14 April 2010. Motivated by a convergence of facts and trends in the world of publishing, as well as by interrogations from within the astronomy community, the FPCA meetings are quietly?? making history as they are convening all major partners, publishers, editors, archive managers, officers of learned societies, as well as scientists involved in professional communication processes. The contributions presented in this volume describe their activities, projects and questions on the future

TitleElectronic Publishing for Physics and Astronomy
Author(s)Heck, Andre
PublicationDordrecht, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Netherlands, 1997.
DescriptionVIII, 250 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe ship has left the Miraflores Locks, let loose from the 'mules' run by the crews of the Panama Canal Commission. She has picked up speed while passing under the Bridge of the Americas which links de facto the Northern and Southern parts of the continent, and has headed resolutely towards the Pacific Ocean waters along the rows of boats of all kinds waiting to cross the Canal in the other direction. Through a layer of tropical clouds, the setting Sun is bleakly illuminating the tall white highrises of Panama City on the port side. It took a full day to cautiously move through the whole system of locks and cuts. Back in the stateroom, I open again a working copy of this book and type down this foreword on the pocket computer. The last chapter was received the day before while speeding through the Caribbean Sea and my main work as Editor is now over. It has been a real pleasure and a great honour to be given the oppor?? tunity of compiling this book and interacting with the various contributors through the latest technologies while being sometimes in geographically very different places. The quality of the authors, the scope of experiences they cover, the messages they convey make of this book a unique and timely publication. The reader will certainly enjoy as much as I did going through such a variety of well-inspired chapters from so many different horizons
