TitleGravitational Lensing: An Astrophysical Tool
Author(s)Courbin, Frederic;Minniti, Dante
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2002.
DescriptionXI, 191 p. 40 illus., 17 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book contains a complete and up-to-date review of gravitational lensing, focussing on recent progress in both observations and theory. The mapping of dark matter on galaxy and cluster sized scales, as will be seen through the future eyes of ALMA, is discussed. The lensing of quasars is presented as a method for measuring cosmological parameters and recent observations and modeling are examined. In the regime of weak gravitational lensing numerous results are now available and are compared with simulations at different length-scales. The use of weak lensing around isolated galaxies to measure the shape of galaxy halos is studied. Absorption lines of lensed quasars can be used to map the occulting systems out to a redshift of 2 and this technique is investigated. This book is designed for researchers and graduate students interested in any research area of gravitational lensing

TitleSpiral Galaxies in the Near-IR : Proceedings of the ESO/MPA Workshop Held at Garching, Germany, 7???9 June 1995
Author(s)Minniti, Dante;Rix, Hans-Walter
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1996.
DescriptionX, 350 p. 217 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book contains a complete and up-to-date review of spiral galaxies, focussing on recent progress in our understanding that became possible through the arrival of array detectors for the near IR. Both state-of-the-art IR observations and theoretical modeling of disk galaxies are presented. Special emphasis is placed on the old and young stellar populations, both in resolved galaxies and in more distant ones. The nuclear activity of disk galaxies is treated in depth, from our Galactic center to quasars along with detailed descriptions of the influence of dust. This book is addressed to professional astronomers and students, including observers and theorists
