TitleSynchronization in Oscillatory Networks
Author(s)Osipov, Grigory V;Kurths, J??rgen;Zhou, Changsong
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2007.
DescriptionXIV, 370 p. 221 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe formation of collective behavior in large ensembles or networks of coupled oscillatory elements is one of the oldest and most fundamental aspects of dynamical systems theory. Potential and present applications span a vast spectrum of fields ranging from physics, chemistry, geoscience, through life- and neurosciences to engineering, the economic and the social sciences. This work systematically investigates a large number of oscillatory network configurations that are able to describe many real systems such as electric power grids, lasers or the heart muscle - to name but a few. This book is conceived as an introduction to the field for graduate students in physics and applied mathematics as well as being a compendium for researchers from any field of application interested in quantitative models

TitleComplex Dynamics in Physiological Systems: From Heart to Brain
Author(s)Dana, Syamal K;Roy, Prodyot K;Kurths, J??rgen
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2009.
DescriptionXVI, 272 p. 136 illus., 54 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteNonlinear dynamics has become an important field of research in recent years in many areas of the natural sciences. In particular, it has potential applications in biology and medicine; nonlinear data analysis has helped to detect the progress of cardiac disease, physiological disorders, for example episodes of epilepsy, and others. This book focuses on the current trends of research concerning the prediction of sudden cardiac death and the onset of epileptic seizures, using the nonlinear analysis based on ECG and EEG data. Topics covered include the analysis of cardiac models and neural models. The book is a collection of recent research papers by leading physicists, mathematicians, cardiologists and neurobiologists who are actively involved in using the concepts of nonlinear dynamics to explore the functional behaviours of heart and brain under normal and pathological conditions. This collection is intended for students in physics, mathematics and medical sciences, and researchers in interdisciplinary areas of physics and biology

TitleLectures in Supercomputational Neuroscience : Dynamics in Complex Brain Networks
Author(s)Graben, Peter;Zhou, Changsong;Thiel, Marco;Kurths, J??rgen
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2008.
DescriptionX, 377 p : online resource
Abstract NoteComputational Neuroscience is a burgeoning field of research where only the combined effort of neuroscientists, biologists, psychologists, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers and other specialists, e.g. from linguistics and medicine, seem to be able to expand the limits of our knowledge. The present volume is an introduction, largely from the physicists' perspective, to the subject matter with in-depth contributions by system neuroscientists. A conceptual model for complex networks of neurons is introduced that incorporates many important features of the real brain, such as various types of neurons, various brain areas, inhibitory and excitatory coupling and the plasticity of the network. The computational implementation on supercomputers, which is introduced and discussed in detail in this book, will enable the readers to modify and adapt the algortihm for their own research. Worked-out examples of applications are presented for networks of Morris-Lecar neurons to model the cortical connections of a cat's brain, supported with data from experimental studies. This book is particularly suited for graduate students and nonspecialists from related fields with a general science background, looking for a substantial but "hands-on" introduction to the subject matter

TitleNonlinear Dynamics and Chaos: Advances and Perspectives
Author(s)Thiel, Marco;Kurths, J??rgen;Romano, M. Carmen;K??rolyi, Gy??rgy;Moura, Alessandro
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010.
DescriptionXV, 293 p. 16 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a collection of contributions on various aspects of active frontier research in the field of dynamical systems and chaos. Each chapter examines a specific research topic and, in addition to reviewing recent results, also discusses future perspectives. The result is an invaluable snapshot of the state of the field by some of its most important researchers. The first contribution in this book, "How did you get into Chaos?", is actually a collection of personal accounts by a number of distinguished scientists on how they entered the field of chaos and dynamical systems, featuring comments and recollections by James Yorke, Harry Swinney, Floris Takens, Peter Grassberger, Edward Ott, Lou Pecora, Itamar Procaccia, Michael Berry, Giulio Casati, Valentin Afraimovich, Robert MacKay, and last but not least, Celso Grebogi, to whom this volume is dedicated.

TitleMathematical Methods in Time Series Analysis and Digital Image Processing
Author(s)Dahlhaus, Rainer;Kurths, J??rgen;Maass, Peter;Timmer, Jens
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2008.
DescriptionXIV, 294 p. 109 illus., 13 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe aim of this volume is to bring together research directions in theoretical signal and imaging processing developed rather independently in electrical engineering, theoretical physics, mathematics and the computer sciences. In particular, mathematically justified algorithms and methods, the mathematical analysis of these algorithms, and methods as well as the investigation of connections between methods from time series analysis and image processing are reviewed. An interdisciplinary comparison of these methods, drawing upon common sets of test problems from medicine and geophysical/enviromental sciences, is also addressed. This volume coherently summarizes work carried out in the field of theoretical signal and image processing. It focuses on non-linear and non-parametric models for time series as well as on adaptive methods in image processing
