DescriptionXII, 292 p. 276 illus., 271 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is for anyone who owns, or is thinking of owning, a Vixen Star Book Ten telescope mount or its predecessor. A revolution in amateur astronomy has occurred in the past decade with the wide availability of high tech, computer-driven, Go-To telescopes. Vixen Optics is leading the way by offering the Star Book Ten system, with its unique star map graphics software. The Star Book Ten is the latest version of computer telescope control using star map graphics as a user interface, first introduced in the original Star Book first offered in 2003. The increasingly complicated nature of this software means that learning to optimize this program is not straightforward, and yet the resulting views when all features are correctly deployed can be phenomenal. After a short history of computerized Go-To telescopes for the consumer amateur astronomer market, Chen offers a treasury of technical information. His advice, tips, and solutions aid the user in getting the most out of the Star Book Ten system in observing sessions

Author(s)Miyara, Federico
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXIX, 429 p. 150 illus., 7 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook provides a detailed introduction to the use of software in combination with simple and economical hardware (a sound level meter with calibrated AC output and a digital recording system) to obtain sophisticated measurements usually requiring expensive equipment. It emphasizes the use of free, open source, and multiplatform software. Many commercial acoustical measurement systems use software algorithms as an integral component; however the methods are not disclosed. This book enables the reader to develop useful algorithms and provides insight into the use of digital audio editing tools to document features in the signal. Topics covered include acoustical measurement principles, in-depth critical study of uncertainty applied to acoustical measurements, digital signal processing from the basics, and metrologically-oriented spectral and statistical analysis of signals. The student will gain a deep understanding of the use of software for measurement purposes; the ability to implement software-based measurement systems; familiarity with the hardware necessary to acquire and store signals; an appreciation for the key issue of long-term preservation of signals; and a full grasp of the often neglected issue of uncertainty in acoustical measurements. Pedagogical features include in-text worked-out examples, end-of-chapter problems, a glossary of metrology terms, and extensive appendices covering statistics, proofs, additional examples, file formats, and underlying theory. Provides a cost-effective, primarily open source solution to obtaining and analyzing acoustical measurements Presents methods which are applicable to embedded systems running any system using free GPL software Equips readers with a deep understanding of the central challenges in acoustical measurements including a discussion of uncertainty Features comprehensive description of hardware, from the hard disk to flash memory, and from the digital recorder to the microphone and audiometric earphone Includes a chapter on testing hardware to ensure standard compliance

TitleCMOS Imagers : From Phototransduction to Image Processing
Author(s)Yadid-Pecht, Orly;Etienne-Cummings, Ralph
PublicationNew York, NY, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer US, 2004.
DescriptionXVI, 242 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe idea of writing a book on CMOS imaging has been brewing for several years. It was placed on a fast track after we agreed to organize a tutorial on CMOS sensors for the 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS 2004). This tutorial defined the structure of the book, but as first time authors/editors, we had a lot to learn about the logistics of putting together information from multiple sources. Needless to say, it was a long road between the tutorial and the book, and it took more than a few months to complete. We hope that you will find our journey worthwhile and the collated information useful. The laboratories of the authors are located at many universities distributed around the world. Their unifying theme, however, is the advancement of knowledge for the development of systems for CMOS imaging and image processing. We hope that this book will highlight the ideas that have been pioneered by the authors, while providing a roadmap for new practitioners in this field to exploit exciting opportunities to integrate imaging and ???smartness??? on a single VLSI chip. The potential of these smart imaging systems is still unfulfilled. Hence, there is still plenty of research and development to be done

TitleCountdown to a Moon Launch : Preparing Apollo for Its Historic Journey
Author(s)Ward, Jonathan H
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXXVI, 435 p. 271 illus., 78 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThousands of workers labored at Kennedy Space Center around the clock, seven days a week, for half a year to prepare a mission for the liftoff of Apollo 11. This is the story of what went on during those hectic six months. Countdown to a Moon Launch provides an in-depth look at the carefully choreographed workflow for an Apollo mission at KSC. Using the Apollo 11 mission as an example, readers will learn what went on day by day to transform partially completed stages and crates of parts into a ready-to-fly Saturn V. Firsthand accounts of launch pad accidents, near misses, suspected sabotage, and last-minute changes to hardware are told by more than 70 NASA employees and its contractors. A companion to Rocket Ranch, it includes many diagrams and photographs, some never before published, to illustrate all aspects of the process. NASA???s groundbreaking use of computers for testing and advanced management techniques are also covered in detail. This book will demystify the question of how NASA could build and launch Apollo missions using 1960s technology. You???ll discover that there was no magic involved ??? just an abundance of discipline, willpower, and creativity

TitleFrom the Web to the Grid and Beyond : Computing Paradigms Driven by High-Energy Physics
Author(s)Brun, Ren??;Carminati, Federico;Galli Carminati, Giuliana
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2012.
DescriptionXX, 360 p : online resource
Abstract NoteBorn after World War II, large-scale experimental high-energy physics (HEP) has found itself limited ever since by available accelerator, detector and computing technologies. Accordingly, HEP has made significant contributions to the development of these fields, more often than not driving their innovations. The invention of the World Wide Web at CERN is merely the best-known example out of many. This book is the first comprehensive account to trace the history of this pioneering spirit in the field of computing technologies. It covers everything up to and including the present-day handling of the huge demands imposed upon grid and distributed computing by full-scale LHC operations - operations which have for years involved many thousands of collaborating members worldwide and accordingly provide the original and natural testbed for grid computing concepts. This book takes the reader on a guided tour encompassing all relevant topics, including programming languages, software engineering, large databases, the Web, and grid- and cloud computing. The important issue of intellectual property regulations for distributed software engineering and computing is also addressed. Aptly, the book closes with a visionary chapter of what may lie ahead. Approachable and requiring only basic understanding of physics and computer sciences, this book is intended for both education and research

DescriptionXIV, 371 p. 21 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this second edition every chapter of the first edition of Pattern Analysis has been updated and expanded. The general view of a system for pattern analysis and understanding has remained unchanged, but many details have been revised. A short account of light and sound has been added to the introduction, some normalization techniques and a basic introduction to morphological operations have been added to the second chapter. Chapter 3 has been expanded significantly by topics like motion, depth, and shape from shading; additional material has also been added to the already existing sections of this chapter. The old sections of Chap. 4 have been reorganized, a general view of the classification problem has been added and material provided to incorporate techniques of word and object recognition and to give a short account of some types of neural nets. Almost no changes have been made in Chap. 5. The part on representation of control structures in Chap. 6 has been shortened, a section on the judgement of results has been added. Chapter 7 has been rewritten almost completely; the section on formal grammars has been reduced, the sections on production systems, semantic networks, and knowledge acquisition have been expanded, and sections on logic and explanation added. The old Chaps. 8 and 9 have been omitted. In summary, the new edition is a thorough revision and extensive update of the first one taking into account the progress in the field during recent years
