TitleBuilding Common Interests in the Arctic Ocean with Global Inclusion : Volume 2
Author(s)Berkman, Paul Arthur;Vylegzhanin, Alexander N;Young, Oran R;Balton, David A;??vretveit, Ole Rasmus
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXL, 451 p. 72 illus., 67 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book contains an inclusive compilation of perspectives about the Arctic Ocean with contributions that extend from Indigenous residents and early career scientists to Foreign Ministers, involving perspectives across the spectrum of subnational-national-international jurisdictions. The Arctic Ocean is being transformed with global climate warming into a seasonally ice-free sea, creating challenges as well as opportunities that operate short-to-long term, underscoring the necessity to make informed decisions across a continuum of urgencies from security to sustainability time scales. The Arctic Ocean offers a case study with lessons that are especially profound at this moment when humankind is exposed to a pandemic, awakening a common interest in survival across our globally-interconnected civilization unlike any period since the Second World War. This second volume in the Informed Decisionmaking for Sustainability series reveals that building global inclusion involves common interests to address changes effectively ???for the benefit of all on Earth across generations.???

TitleDisaster Forensics : Understanding Root Cause and Complex Causality
Author(s)Masys, Anthony J
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXVII, 409 p. 41 illus., 30 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book aims to uncover the root causes of natural and man-made disasters by going beyond the typical reports and case studies conducted post-disaster. It opens the black box of disasters by presenting ???forensic analysis approaches??? to disasters, thereby revealing the complex causality that characterizes them and explaining how and why hazards do, or do not, become disasters. This yields ???systemic??? strategies for managing disasters. Recently the global threat landscape has seen the emergence of high impact, low probability events. Events like Hurricane Katrina, the Great Japan Earthquake and tsunami, Hurricane Sandy, Super Typhoon Haiyan, global terrorist activities have become the new norm. Extreme events challenge our understanding regarding the interdependencies and complexity of the disaster aetiology and are often referred to as Black Swans. Between 2002 and 2011, there were 4130 disasters recorded that resulted from natural hazards around the world. In these, 1,117,527 people perished and a minimum of US$1,195 billion in losses were reported. In the year 2011 alone, 302 disasters claimed 29,782 lives; affected 206 million people and inflicted damages worth a minimum of estimated US$366 billion

TitleDefining the Limits of Outer Space for Regulatory Purposes
Author(s)Bittencourt Neto, Olavo de Oliviera
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2015.
DescriptionXI, 110 p. 76 illus., 60 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteWith different countries ascribing to different theories of air space and outer space law, Dr. Bittencourt Neto proposes in this Brief a reassessment of the??international law??related to the extension of state territories vertically. Taking into consideration the vast number of proposals offered by scholars and diplomatic delegations on this subject matter, as well as the principles of comparative law, a compromise to allow for peaceful development is the only way forward. The author argues for??setting??the delimitation of the frontier between air space and outer space at 100 km above mean sea level through an international treaty. This would also regulate passage rights for space objects during launchings and reentries, as long as those space activities are peaceful, conducted in accordance with international Law and respecting the sovereign interests of the territorial State. Continuing expansion of the commercial space industry and conflicting national laws require a stable and fair legal framework best adjudicated by the United Nations, instead of allowing a patchwork system to persist. The proper framework for developing such regulation is carefully discussed from all angles with a practical recommendation for policy-makers in the field

TitlePhysics of Societal Issues : Calculations on National Security, Environment, and Energy
Author(s)Hafemeister, David
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2014.
DescriptionXX, 668 p. 109 illus., 38 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides the reader with essential tools needed to analyze complex societal issues and demonstrates the transition from physics to modern-day laws and treaties. This second edition features new equation-oriented material and extensive data sets drawing upon current information from experts in their fields. Problems to challenge the reader and extend discussion are presented on three timely issues: ?? ????????????????? National Security: Weapons, Offense, Defense, Verification, Nuclear Proliferation, Terrorism ????????????????? Environment: Air/Water, Nuclear, Climate Change, EM Fields/Epidemiology ????????????????? Energy: Current Energy Situation, Buildings, Solar Buildings, Renewable ??Energy, Enhanced End-Use Efficiency, Transportation, Economics ?? Praise for the first edition: "This insight is needed in Congress and the Executive Branch. Hafemeister, a former Congressional fellow with wide Washington experience, has written a book for physicists, chemists and engineers who want to learn science and policy on weapons, energy, and the environment. Scientists who want to make a difference will want this book." Richard Scribner, first Director, Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow Program, AAAS ?? "Hafemeister shows how much one can understand about nuclear weapons and missile issues through simple back-of-the-envelope calculations. He also provides compact explanations of the partially successful attempts that have been made over the past 60 years to control these weapons of mass destruction. Hopefully, Physics of Societal Issues will help interest a new generation of physicists in continuing this work." Frank von Hippel, Professor, Princeton, former Assistant Director, National Security, White House, OSTP ?? "Energy policy must be quantitative. People who don't calculate economic tradeoffs often champion simplistic hardware. ???The solution is more... nuclear power, or electric cars, or photovoltaics, etc.??? Some simple physics will show that the true solution matches supply and demand as an ???integrated resource plan.??? Physics of Societal Issues is a good place to begin this journey." Arthur Rosenfeld, former California Energy Commissioner, Professor-emeritus, U. of California-Berkeley

TitleLight Pollution : Responses and Remedies
Author(s)Mizon, Bob
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 2012.
DescriptionXXII, 282 p. 165 illus., 42 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteLight pollution is a major threat to astronomy across the entire developed world. The night sky that most of us can see bears little relationship to the spectacular vistas that our ancestors have gazed at for??tens of thousands of years. It is ironic that as our understanding of the universe has improved, our ability to see it has been dramatically reduced by the skyglow of our civilization. In the second edition of Light Pollution - Responses and Remedies, Bob Mizon delves into the history and practice of lighting and how its misue has not only stolen the stars, but blighted our lives and those of our fellow-creatures on this planet. This book suggests how we can win back the night sky and at the same time save energy and money, improve our health, and even lower crime rate! It also includes a list of targets for urban stargazers, and recommendations for ensuring sane lighting worldwide
