Title | Now Hear This : A Book About Sound |
Author(s) | Naylor, John |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XIX, 334 p. 57 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book explains the nature of sound both as a physical phenomenon and as a sensation, how it travels through air and water, and how the hearing system evolved to convert these vibrations into sensations. Drawing on physics, biology, neuroscience, philosophy, literature, history, anecdote, and personal experience, "Now Hear This" is a wide-ranging exploration of the nature of sound and hearing that opens up a fascinating world of sounds from the mundane to the unusual and seeks above all to persuade the reader of the wisdom of John Cage???s advice that ???Wherever we are what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating.??? |

Title | The Science of Musical Sound : Volume 1: Stringed Instruments, Pipe Organs, and the Human Voice |
Author(s) | Bennett Jr., William Ralph;Morrison, Andrew C. H |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XXVII, 440 p. 269 illus., 84 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This textbook is a product of William Bennett???s work in developing and teaching a course on the physics of music at Yale University to a diverse audience of musicians and science students in the same class. The book is a culmination of over a decade of teaching the course and weaves together historical descriptions of the physical phenomena with the author???s clear interpretations of the most important aspects of the science of music and musical instruments. Many of the historical examples are not found in any other textbook available on the market. As the co-inventor of the Helium-Neon laser, Prof. Bennett???s knowledge of physics was world-class. As a professor at one of the most prestigious liberal-arts universities in the world, his appreciation for culture and humanities shines through. The book covers the basics of oscillations, waves and the analysis techniques necessary for understanding how musical instruments work. All types of stringed instruments, pipe organs, and the human voice are covered in this volume. A second volume covers the remaining families of musical instruments as well as selected other topics. Readers without a background in acoustics will enjoy learning the physics of the Science of Musical Sound from a preeminent scientist of the 20th century. Those well versed in acoustics will discover wonderful illustrations and photographs depicting familiar concepts in new and enlightening ways |

Title | Treatise on Acoustics : The First Comprehensive English Translation of E.F.F. Chladni's Trait?? d???Acoustique |
Author(s) | Chladni, E.F.F |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2015. |
Description | XXXI, 227 p. 25 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This is the first comprehensive translation of the expanded French version of E.F.F. Chladni???s Trait?? d???Acoustique, using Chladni's 1802 Die Akustik for reference and clarification. Chladni???s experiments and observations with sound and vibrations profoundly influenced the development of the field of Acoustics. The famous Chladni diagrams along with other observations are contained in Die Akustik, published in German in 1802 and Trait?? d???Acoustique, a greatly expanded version, published in French in 1809. The present translation was undertaken by Robert T. Beyer, PhD (1920-2008), noted acoustician, Professor of Physics at Brown University, and Gold Medal recipient of the Acoustical Society of America. Along with many other projects completed over the course of his career, Dr. Beyer translated Von Neumann???s seminal work, Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics from the original German, spent 30 years translating Russian physics treatises and journals, served as editor of the English translation of the Soviet Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics, and also authored Sounds of our Times: Two Hundred Years of Acoustics. Represents the first comprehensive English translation of a seminal work in acoustics Translated by a prominent acoustician, and former Gold Medal recipient of the Acoustical Society of America In addition to the classic experiments with glass plates and violin bows, covers topics in music, architecture, and anatomy of human and animal hearing Appeals to a wide audience in physics, acoustics, and history of science |

Title | Auditory and Visual Sensations |
Author(s) | Ando, Yoichi |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2010. |
Description | XXV, 344 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Professor Yoichi Ando, acoustic architectural designer of the Kirishima International Concert Hall in Japan, presents a comprehensive rational-scientific approach to designing performance spaces. His theory is based on systematic psychoacoustical observations of spatial hearing and listener preferences, whose neuronal correlates are observed in the neurophysiology of the human brain. A correlation-based model of neuronal signal processing in the central auditory system is proposed in which temporal sensations (pitch, timbre, loudness, duration) are represented by an internal autocorrelation representation, and spatial sensations (sound location, size, diffuseness related to envelopment) are represented by an internal interaural crosscorrelation function. Together these two internal central auditory representations account for the basic auditory qualities that are relevant for listening to music and speech in indoor performance spaces. Observed psychological and neurophysiological commonalities between auditory and visual sensations and preference patterns are presented and discussed. This book thus spans the disciplines of physics, acoustics, psychology, neurophysiology, and music production, thereby blending science, engineering, and art |

Title | Acoustics, Information, and Communication : Memorial Volume in Honor of Manfred R. Schroeder |
Author(s) | Xiang, Ning;Sessler, Gerhard M |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2015. |
Description | XVIII, 461 p. 226 illus., 91 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book explores the life and scientific legacy of Manfred Schroeder through personal reflections, scientific essays, and Schroeder???s own memoirs. Reflecting the wide range of Schroeder???s activities, the first part of the book contains thirteen articles written by his colleagues and former students. Topics discussed include his early, pioneering contributions to the understanding of statistical room acoustics and to the measurement of reverberation time; his introduction of digital signal processing methods into acoustics; his use of ray tracing methods to study sound decay in rooms; and his achievements in echo and feedback suppression and in noise reduction. Other chapters cover his seminal research in speech processing including the use of predictive coding to reduce audio bandwidth which led to various code-excited linear prediction schemes, today used extensively for speech coding. Several chapters discuss Schroeder???s work in low-peak factor signals, number theory, and maximum-length sequences with key applications in hearing research, diffraction gratings, artificial reverberators, and de-correlation techniques for enhancing subjective envelopment in surround sound. In style, the articles range from truly scientific to conversationally personal. In all contributions, the relationship between the current research presented and Manfred Schroeder???s own fields of interest is, in general, evident. The second part of the book consists of Schroeder???s own memoirs, written over the final decade of his life. These recollections shed light on many aspects not only of Schroeder???s life but also on that of many of his colleagues, friends, and contemporaries. They portray political, social, and scientific events over a period that extends from pre-war to the present. These memoirs, written in an inimitable and witty style, are full of information, entertaining, and fun to read, providing key insight into the life and work of one of the greatest acousticians of the 20th century. Reflects on the life, work, and legacy of one of the greatest acousticians of the 20th century Features articles by leading researchers on the implications of Schroeder???s research today Covers a wide range of topics, from room acoustics, noise reduction, physical acoustics, and underwater acoustics to transducers, speech signal processing, and number-theory applications |
