Author(s)Allen, David H
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXXIII, 464 p. 453 illus., 334 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis updated and augmented second edition covers the history of mechanics in such a way as to explain how this all-important discipline shaped our world. Like the first edition, Dr. Allen presents the material in an engaging, accessible manner, with many historic insights and thorough explanations of attending concepts. The text retains its coverage of classical mechanics, essentially Newtonian mechanics, and adds chapters on three additional topics that go well beyond classical mechanics: relativity, quantum/nanomechanics, and biomechanics. Contextualizes mechanics from the ancients, through Newton, and up to 21st Century nanotechnology Explains how these new developments in mechanics will continue to alter our world Appropriate for undergraduate students and faculty as well as lay readers interested in physics and engineering

TitleNonlinear Continuum Mechanics : An Engineering Approach
Author(s)Agelet de Saracibar, Carlos
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXX, 344 p. 43 illus., 42 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook on Continuum Mechanics presents 9 chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 are devoted to Tensor Algebra and Tensor Analysis. Part I of the book includes the next 3 chapters. All the content here is valid for both solid and fluid materials. At the end of Part I, the reader should be able to set up in local spatial/material form, the fundamental governing equations and inequalities for a Continuum Mechanics problem. Part II of the book, Chapters 6 to 10, is devoted to presenting some nonlinear constitutive models for Nonlinear Solid Mechanics, including Finite Deformation Hyperelasticity, Finite Deformation Plasticity, Finite Deformation Coupled Thermoplasticity, and Finite Deformation Contact Mechanics. The constitutive equations are derived within a thermodynamically consistent framework. Finite deformation elastoplasticity models are based on a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient and the notion of an intermediate configuration. Different formulations based on the intermediate configuration, the current or spatial configuration, and the material configuration are considered. The last chapter is devoted to Variational Methods in Solid Mechanics, a fundamental topic in Computational Mechanics. The book may be used as a textbook for an advanced Master???s course on Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics for graduate students in Civil, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or Applied Physics, with an interest in Continuum Mechanics and Computational Mechanics

TitleEngineering Design Applications V : Structures, Materials and Processes
Author(s)??chsner, Andreas;Altenbach, Holm
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2023.
DescriptionXVI, 429 p. 303 illus., 271 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book gives an update on recent developments in different engineering disciplines such as mechanical, materials, computer and process engineering, focusing on modern engineering design applications. These disciplines provide the foundation for the design and development of improved structures, materials and processes. The modern design cycle is characterized by an interaction of different disciplines and a strong shift to computer-based approaches where only a few experiments are performed for verification purposes. A major driver for this development is the increased demand for cost reduction, which is also connected to environmental demands. In the transportation industry (e.g., automotive), this is connected to the demand for higher fuel efficiency, which is related to the operational costs and the lower harm for the environment. One way to fulfill such requirements is lighter structures and/or improved processes for energy conversion. Another emerging area is the interaction ofclassical engineering with the health, medical and environmental sector. The chapters are selected contributions of the Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting conference, held in July 2022 in Florence, Italy

DescriptionXVI, 188 p. 30 illus., 23 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook provides an overview of the fundamental concepts in continuum mechanics for application in real material behavior analysis. The contents cover basic topics such as Kinematics???the motion of any material point representing a material body using the Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches; stress tensors???stress analysis of material bodies experiencing small deformations; mathematical modeling of material properties in continuum mechanics; balance principles???transfer of specific mechanical properties from a system to its environment or vice-versa through the system boundary. The textbook also contains pedagogical elements such as worked examples and end-of-chapter exercises which are derived from typical engineering problems, and the solution manual so that students can solve computational problems by running simulations on Matlab or Python on their own. This benefits engineering students understand the concept of continuum mechanics for future analysis using finite-element analysis, boundary element method or any other computational methods

PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXIII, 242 p. 46 illus., 10 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis revised and enhanced new edition of a well-established textbook provides a balanced overview of various areas of theoretical physics based on the use of variational principles. As well as field theory, the book deals with motion in curved spaces, the cradle of general relativity, and gravitational optics. New chapters on the relation of classical mechanics and geometrical optics as well as gravitational waves, which are considered as a true confirmation of general relativity, have been included. Each chapter has been carefully revised and enlarged. Finally, the text describes Feynman's formulation of quantum mechanics by path integrals, which gives the link between quantum and classical mechanics. The book provides a set of exercises, problems, and solutions

TitleLoudspeaker Physics and Forced Vibration
Author(s)Watkins, William H
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIX, 130 p. 54 illus., 9 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a study of the workings of dynamic loudspeakers and dynamically forced vibration. With its wealth of practical observations and real-life examples, this work will prove invaluable to the practicing motor design or loudspeaker design engineer, as well as researchers and students in electroacoustics. The book is based on a lifetime???s accumulated knowledge by acclaimed speaker designer William H. (Bill) Watkins. It differs from the usual tone of most technical books on this subject by initially presenting, and analyzing in full, the function of each key parameter of a reference dynamic loudspeaker. Each parameter???s value is then calculated and also confirmed via lab measurements to vividly illustrate all energy-transduction facets of loudspeaker operation and the forced vibration. This presentation style makes the analysis both more engaging, intuitive, and easier to comprehend compared to most previous works in the field. The principles of this book apply to all direct reciprocating motors, not just those in a dynamic loudspeaker. Unique to the book is an entire chapter dedicated to the discussion of back-EMF voltage, discussed from several technical points of view and analyzed in depth as related to the dynamic transfer of energy between the mechanical and electrical domains. Another unique feature is a detailed discussion of Watkins??? patented dual-motor concept to achieve high dynamic speaker performance in the region of its low-frequency resonance
