TitleLoudspeaker Physics and Forced Vibration
Author(s)Watkins, William H
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIX, 130 p. 54 illus., 9 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a study of the workings of dynamic loudspeakers and dynamically forced vibration. With its wealth of practical observations and real-life examples, this work will prove invaluable to the practicing motor design or loudspeaker design engineer, as well as researchers and students in electroacoustics. The book is based on a lifetime???s accumulated knowledge by acclaimed speaker designer William H. (Bill) Watkins. It differs from the usual tone of most technical books on this subject by initially presenting, and analyzing in full, the function of each key parameter of a reference dynamic loudspeaker. Each parameter???s value is then calculated and also confirmed via lab measurements to vividly illustrate all energy-transduction facets of loudspeaker operation and the forced vibration. This presentation style makes the analysis both more engaging, intuitive, and easier to comprehend compared to most previous works in the field. The principles of this book apply to all direct reciprocating motors, not just those in a dynamic loudspeaker. Unique to the book is an entire chapter dedicated to the discussion of back-EMF voltage, discussed from several technical points of view and analyzed in depth as related to the dynamic transfer of energy between the mechanical and electrical domains. Another unique feature is a detailed discussion of Watkins??? patented dual-motor concept to achieve high dynamic speaker performance in the region of its low-frequency resonance

Abstract NoteThis book presents recent improvements in peridynamic modeling of structures. It provides sufficient theory and numerical implementation helpful to both new and existing researchers in the field. The main focus of the book is on the non-ordinary state-based (NOSB) peridynamics (PD) and its applications for performing finite deformation. It presents the framework for modeling high stretch polymers, viscoelastic materials, thermoelasticity, plasticity, and creep. It provides a systematic derivation for dimensionally reduced structures such as axisymmetric structures and beams. Also, it presents a novel approach to impose boundary conditions without suffering from displacement kinks near the boundary. Furthermore, it presents refinements to bond-based PD model by including rotation kinematics for modeling isotropic and composite materials. Moreover, it presents a PD ??? FEM coupling framework in ANSYS based on principle for virtual work. Lastly, it presents an application of neural networks in the peridynamic (PINN) framework. Sample codes are provided for readers to develop hands-on experience on peridynamic modeling. Describes new developments in peridynamics and their applications in the presence of material and geometric nonlinearity; Describes an approach to seamlessly couple PD with FE; Introduces the use of the neural network in the PD framework to solve engineering problems; Provides theory and numerical examples for researchers and students to self-study and apply in their research (Codes are provided as supplementary material); Provides theoretical development and numerical examples suitable for graduate courses

TitleIntroduction to Unified Mechanics Theory with Applications
Author(s)Basaran, Cemal
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXVIII, 519 p. 192 illus., 75 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis second edition adds new sections on derivation of dynamic equilibrium equations in unified mechanics theory and solution of an example, derivation of very high cycle fatigue thermodynamic fundamental equation and application/verification with two metal fatigue examples, derivation of thermodynamic fundamental equations for metal corrosion, examples of corrosion ??? fatigue interaction. There is also an example of ultrasonic vibration fatigue and one traditional tension/compression loading in elastic regime. While updated and augmented throughout, the book retains its description of the mathematical formulation and proof of the unified mechanics theory (UMT), which is based on the unification of Newton???s laws and the laws of thermodynamics. It also presents formulations and experimental verifications of the theory for thermal, mechanical, electrical, corrosion, chemical and fatigue loads, and it discusses why the original universal laws of motion proposed by Isaac Newton in 1687 are incomplete. The author provides concrete examples, such as how Newton???s second law, F = ma, gives the initial acceleration of a soccer ball kicked by a player, but does not tell us how and when the ball would come to a stop. Over the course of the text, Dr. Basaran illustrates that Newtonian mechanics does not account for the thermodynamic changes happening in a system over its usable lifetime. And in this context, this book explains how to design a system to perform its intended functions safely over its usable life time and predicts the expected lifetime of the system without using empirical models, a process currently done using Newtonian mechanics and empirical degradation/failure/fatigue models which are curve-fit to test data. Written as a textbook suitable for upper-level undergraduate mechanics courses, as well as first year graduate level courses, this book is the result of over 25 years of scientific activity with the contribution of dozens of scientists from around the world. The Book Presents a mechanics theory without curve fitting polynomials and equilibrium equations without a damping coefficient. Simulates of corrosion without phenomenological models and physics-based prediction of fatigue life without test data. Explains interaction of corrosion and very high cycle fatigue from a thermodynamics perspective with lab verifications

TitleEngineering Elasticity : Elasticity with less Stress and Strain
Author(s)Hardy, Humphrey
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXV, 271 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook aimed at upper-level undergraduate and graduate engineering students who need to describe the large deformation of elastic materials like soft plastics, rubber, and biological materials. The classical approaches to finite deformations of elastic materials describe a dozen or more measures of stress and strain. These classical approaches require an in-depth knowledge of tensor analysis and provide little instruction as to how to relate the derived equations to the materials to be described. This text, by contrast, introduces only one strain measure and one stress measure. No tensor analysis is required. The theory is applied by showing how to measure material properties and to perform computer simulations for both isotropic and anisotropic materials. The theory can be covered in one chapter for students familiar with Euler-Lagrange techniques, but is also introduced more slowly in several chapters for students not familiar with these techniques. The connection to linear elasticity is provided along with a comparison of this approach to classical elasticity. Explains ably simulation of materials undergoing large deformations Illustrates a simpler mathematical base to build thermodynamic and viscoelastic theories Describes how experimenters can make better numerical descriptions of deformable bodies

TitleElements of Classical Plasticity Theory
Author(s)??chsner, Andreas
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIII, 105 p. 62 illus., 34 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis monograph provides a compact introduction into the classical, i.e. rate-independent, plasticity theory. Starting from the engineering stress-strain diagram, the concept of elastic and elasto-plastic material behavior is introduced, as well as the concept of uniaxial and multiaxial stress states. Continuum mechanical modeling in the elasto-plastic range requires, in regards to the constitutive equation, in addition to the elastic law (e.g. Hooke???s law), a yield condition, a flow rule and a hardening rule. These basic equations are thoroughly introduced and explained for one-dimensional stress states. Considering three-dimensional plasticity, different sets of stress invariants to characterize the stress matrix and the decomposition of the stress matrix in its hydrostatic and deviatoric part are introduced. Furthermore, the concept of the yield condition, flow rule and hardening rule is generalized for multiaxial stress states. Some typical yield conditions are introduced and their graphical representation in different stress spaces is discussed in detail. The book concludes with an introduction in the elasto-plastic finite element simulation of mechanical structures. In the context of numerical approximation methods, the so-called predictor-corrector methods are used to integrate the constitutive equations. This is again introduced in detail based on one-dimensional stress states and afterwards generalized to the three-dimensional case. TitlePlane Finite Elements for Two-Dimensional Problems : Application of the Computer Algebra System Maxima
Author(s)??chsner, Andreas;Makvandi, Resam
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXIII, 248 p. 51 illus., 30 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is intended as a study aid for the finite element method. Based on the free computer algebra system Maxima, we offer routines to symbolically or numerically solve problems from the context of two-dimensional problems. For this rather advanced topic, classical ???hand calculations??? are difficult to perform and the incorporation of a computer algebra system is a convenient approach to handle, for example, larger matrix operations. The mechanical theories focus on the classical two-dimensional structural elements, i.e., plane elements, thin or classical plates, and thick or shear deformable plate elements. The use of a computer algebra system and the incorporated functions, e.g., for matrix operations, allows to focus more on the methodology of the finite element method and not on standard procedures. Furthermore, we offer a graphical user interface (GUI) to facilitate the model definition. Thus, the user may enter the required definitions in a source code manner directly in wxMaxima or use the GUI which is able to execute wxMaxime to perform the calculations
