Title | Archaeoastronomy in the Roman World |
Author(s) | Magli, Giulio;Gonz??lez-Garc??a, Antonio C??sar;Belmonte Aviles, Juan;Antonello, Elio |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | XXX, 205 p. 71 illus., 41 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book explores the insights that Cultural Astronomy provides into the classical Roman world by unveiling the ways in which the Romans made use of their knowledge concerning the heavens, and by shedding new light on the interactions between astronomy and heritage in ancient Roman culture. Leading experts in the field present fascinating information on how and why the Romans referred to the sky when deciding upon the orientation of particular monuments, temples, tombs and even urban layouts. Attention is also devoted to questions of broader interest, such as the contribution that religious interpretation of the sky made in the assimilation of conquered peoples. When one considers astronomy in the Roman world it is customary to think of the work and models of Ptolemy, and perhaps the Julian calendar or even the sighting of the Star of Bethlehem. However, like many other peoples in antiquity, the Romans interacted with the heavens in deeper ways that exerted a profound influence on their culture. This book highlights the need to take this complexity into account in various areas of research and will appeal to all those who wish to learn more about the application of astronomy in the lives and architecture of the Romans |

Title | The Starlight Night : The Sky in the Writings of Shakespeare, Tennyson, and Hopkins |
Author(s) | Levy, David H |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2016. |
Description | XXXII, 214 p. 27 illus., 21 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In this updated second edition renowned amateur comet-searcher David H. Levy expands on his work about the intricate relationship between the night sky and the works of English Literature. This revised and expanded text includes new sections on Alfred Lord Tennyson and Gerald Manley Hopkins (both amateur astronomers), extending the time period analyzed in the first edition from early modern literature to encompass the Victorian age. Although the sky enters into much of literature through the ages, British authors offer an especially fertile connection to the heavens, and Levy links the works of seminal authors from Shakespeare on to specific celestial events and scientific advances.?? From the impact of comets and supernovae to eclipses, Levy???s ultimate goal in this book is to inspire his readers to do the same thing as their ancestors did so long ago???look up and appreciate the stars. His insights in this revised book spread farther and wider than ever before in this learned and enchanting tour of the skies |

Author(s) | Steinberger, Jack |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2005. |
Description | X, 181 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Embedded in an autobiographic framework, this book retraces vividly and in some depth the golden years of particle physics as witnessed by one of the scientists who made seminal contributions to the understanding of what is now known as the Standard Model of particle physics. Well beyond a survey of interest to historians of sciences and researchers in the field, this book is a must for all students and young researchers who have learned about the theoretical and experimental facts that make up the standard model through modern textbooks only. It will provide the interested reader with a first hand account and deeper understanding of the multilayered and sinuous development that finally led to the present architecture of this theory |

Title | The Sky in Early Modern English Literature : A Study of Allusions to Celestial Events in Elizabethan and Jacobean Writing, 1572-1620 |
Author(s) | Levy, David H |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2011. |
Description | XXIX, 111 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | When a dissertation gets completed, the normal rule is that it is never read. By anyone.????David H. Levy???s dissertation - The Sky in Early Modern English Literature:?? A Study of Allusions to Celestial Events in Elizabethan and Jacobean Writing, 1572-1620 - is different.?? It opens a whole new interdisciplinary field, which involves the beautiful relationship between the night sky and the works of the early modern period of English Literature.?? Although the sky enters into much of literature through the ages, the period involving William Shakespeare and his colleagues is particularly rich.?? ???????????????????????? When Shakespeare was about 8 years old, his father probably took him outside his Stratford home into their northward-facing back yard.?? There, father and son gazed upon the first great new star visible in the past 500 years, shining forth as brightly as Venus, and even visible in daylight.?? This new star, which we now know as a supernova, completely unhinged old ideas about the cosmos.?? Combined with a parade of bright comets, a second bright new star in 1604, and a series of eclipses, people began to look at the sky more seriously.?? In this book, Levy explores how the sky of that period was reflected in its literature. ???????????????????????? Levy???s ultimate goal in this book is to inspire his readers to do the same thing as their ancestors did so long ago???look at the sky and appreciate how those long-gone authors read the sky |
