TitleMeasurement and Analysis of Human Locomotion
Author(s)Medved, Vladimir
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXI, 371 p. 228 illus., 125 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book addresses instruments, methodologies and diagnostic methods used to evaluate and diagnose human movement, locomotion and physical status in general. Starting from historical perspective, the idea of understanding human locomotion by applying technical measurement devices and incorporating measurement data into physical representation of gross body movement is presented and explained, an approach known as inverse dynamics. With this approach as a kind of umbrella concept, components of measurement systems including relevant signal and data processing methods are described. Modern instruments to capture body movement by measuring its kinematics, kinetics and surface electromyography (sEMG) are thus described; all systems being used dominantly???if not exclusively???in a movement analysis laboratory setting. Focusing mainly on human posture and gait, but including also examples of movement patterns from selected kinesiological and sports activities, the book attempts to present essentials of biomechanics and biomedical engineering approach to this subject matter. It illustrates how data collected and elaborated by modern engineering technology can complement traditional expert knowledge of a kinesiologist or a medical doctor. The book is applicable in the fields of sports, physical activities, as well as in medical diagnostics and rehabilitation. The examples of this book???s practical application might be in evaluation of efficiency of human gait, in evaluation of skeletal muscle fatigue in physical exercise, in biomechanical diagnostics of traumatological conditions requiring orthopaedic treatment and the like. This book can also be used in planning and executing research endeavours, particularly in a clinical context as a reference for various diagnostics procedures. It presents the lecture notes of a course carrying the same name within Medical Studies in English at the University of Zagreb for more than a decade

TitleLiquid Crystals in Biotribology : Synovial Joint Treatment
Author(s)Ermakov, Sergey;Beletskii, Alexandr;Eismont, Oleg;Nikolaev, Vladimir
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXII, 211 p. 105 illus., 9 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book summarizes the theoretical and experimental studies confirming the concept of the liquid-crystalline nature of boundary lubrication in synovial joints. It is shown that cholesteric liquid crystals in the synovial liquid play a significant role in the mechanism of intra-articular friction reduction. The results of structural, rheological and tribological research of the creation of artificial synovial liquids - containing cholesteric liquid crystals in natural synovial liquids - are described. These liquid crystals reproduce the lubrication properties of natural synovia and provide a high chondroprotective efficiency. They were tested in osteoarthritis models and in clinical practice

TitleBiomaterials : A Tantalus Experience
Author(s)Helsen, Jozef A;Missirlis, Yannis
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2010.
DescriptionXVI, 340 p : online resource
Abstract NoteReplacement of a failing hip joint or other defective organs in the human body by artificial ???spare parts??? has significantly improved our quality of life. These spare parts have to meet a wide spectrum of mechanical, chemical and design requirements. ??In this book, the properties and selection of materials for such `spare parts??? are deduced from case studies at the start of each chapter. Hard tissue replacements (joints, long bones, dental), soft tissue (heart valves) and tissue engineering are included. The chapters also detail the three generic classes of materials: alloys (including shape memory alloys), ceramics & glasses and polymers. Separate chapters are devoted to the toxicity of implants, the metals zirconium(-zirconium oxide), tantalum, niobium and metallic glasses, soluble metals and Rapid Prototyping techniques for the fabrication of custom made prostheses.?? The book concludes by a chapter on water as water is always ???there??? and conditions the interaction between body and implant. Water is the very matrix of life on earth. ????A peculiarity of the book is its ???perspective view???, meaning that the authors looked behind the present biomaterials??? d??cor and included historical backgrounds (real and mythological), future developments, and the relation to nature (plants and geology)
