Abstract Note  This thesis reports the measurement of muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance and electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance in a muon neutrino and antineutrino beam using the T2K experiment. It describes a result in neutrino physics that is a pioneering indication of chargeparity (CP) violation in neutrino oscillation; the first to be obtained from a single experiment. Neutrinos are some of the most abundant???but elusive???particles in the universe, and may provide a promising place to look for a potential solution to the puzzle of matter/antimatter imbalance in the observable universe. It has been firmly established that neutrinos can change flavour (or ???oscillate???), as recognised by the 2015 Nobel Prize. The theory of neutrino oscillation allows for neutrinos and antineutrinos to oscillate differently (CP violation), and may provide insights into why our universe is matterdominated. Bayesian statistical methods, including the Markov Chain Monte Carlo fitting technique, are used to simultaneously optimise several hundred systematic parameters describing detector, beam, and neutrino interaction uncertainties as well as the six oscillation parameters

Abstract Note  This revised second edition of the author???s classic text offers readers a comprehensively updated review of relativistic atomic manybody theory, covering the many developments in the field since the publication of the original title. In particular, a new final section extends the scope to cover the evaluation of QED effects for dynamical processes. The treatment of the book is based upon quantumfield theory, and demonstrates that when the procedure is carried to all orders of perturbation theory, twoparticle systems are fully compatible with the relativistically covariant BetheSalpeter equation. This procedure can be applied to arbitrary openshell systems, in analogy with the standard manybody theory, and it is also applicable to systems with more than two particles. Presently existing theoretical procedures for treating atomic systems are, in several cases, insufficient to explain the accurate experimental data recently obtained, particularly for highly charged ions. The main text is divided into three parts. In Part I, the standard timeindependent and timedependent perturbation procedures are reviewed. This includes a new section at the end of chapter 2 concerning the socalled ???Fockspace procedure??? or ???Coulombonly procedure??? for relativisticQED calculations. This is a procedure on an intermediate level, frequently u sed in recent time by chemists on molecular systems, where a full QED treatment is out of question. Part II describes three methods for QED calculations, a) the standard Smatrix formulation, b) the Twotimes Green???sfunction method, developed by the St Petersburg Atomic Theory group, and c) the Covariantevolution operator (CEO) method, recently developed by the Gothenburg Atomic Theory group. In Part III, the CEO method is combined with electron correlation to arbitrary order to a unified MBPTQED procedure. The new Part IV includes two new chapters dealing with dynamical properties and how QED effects can be evaluated for such processes. This part is much needed as there has been an increasing interest in the study of QED effects for such processes. All methods treated in the book are illustrated with numerical examples, making it a text suitable for advanced students new to the field and a useful reference for established researchers

Abstract Note  This thesis addresses two different topics, both vital for implementing modern highenergy physics experiments: detector development and data analysis. Providing a concise introduction to both the standard model of particle physics and the basic principles of semiconductor tracking detectors, it presents the first measurement of the top quark pole mass from the differential crosssection of tt+J events in the dileptonic tt decay channel. The first part focuses on the development and characterization of silicon pixel detectors. To account for the expected increase in luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the pixel detector of the compact muon solenoid (CMS) experiment is replaced by an upgraded detector with new frontend electronics. It presents comprehensive test beam studies conducted to verify the design and quantify the performance of the new frontend in terms of tracking efficiency and spatial resolution. Furthermore, it proposes a new cluster interpol ation method, which utilizes the third central moment of the cluster charge distribution to improve the position resolution. The second part of the thesis introduces an alternative measurement of the top quark mass from the normalized differential production crosssections of dileptonic top quark pair events with an additional jet. The energy measurement is 8TeV. Using theoretical predictions at nexttoleading order in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the top quark pole mass is determined using a template fit method

Abstract Note  This thesis presents the first experimental calibration of the topquark MonteCarlo mass. It also provides the topquark massindependent and most precise topquark pair production crosssection measurement to date. The most precise measurements of the topquark mass obtain the topquark mass parameter (MonteCarlo mass) used in simulations, which are partially based on heuristic models. Its interpretation in terms of mass parameters used in theoretical calculations, e.g. a running or a pole mass, has been a longstanding open problem with farreaching implications beyond particle physics, even affecting conclusions on the stability of the vacuum state of our universe. In this thesis, this problem is solved experimentally in three steps using data obtained with the compact muon solenoid (CMS) detector. The most precise topquark pair production crosssection measurements to date are performed. The MonteCarlo mass is determined and a new method for extracting the topquark mass from theoretical calculations is presented. Lastly, the topquark production crosssections are obtained ??? for the first time ??? without residual dependence on the topquark mass, are interpreted using theoretical calculations to determine the topquark running and pole mass with unprecedented precision, and are fully consistently compared with the simultaneously obtained topquark MonteCarlo mass

Abstract Note  This research monograph covers extensively the theory of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and provides estimates of the theoretical uncertainties. The muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the most precisely measured quantities in elementary particle physics and provides one of the most stringent tests of relativistic quantum field theory as a fundamental theoretical framework. It allows for an extremely precise check of the standard model of elementary particles and of its limitations. This book reviews the present state of knowledge of the anomalous magnetic moment a=(g2)/2 of the muon. Recent experiments at the Brookhaven National Laboratory now reach the unbelievable precision of 0.5 parts per million, improving the accuracy of previous g2 experiments at CERN by a factor of 14. In addition, quantum electrodynamics and electroweak and hadronic effects are reviewed. Since nonperturbative hadronic effects play a key role for the precision test, their evaluation is described in detail. Perspectives for future improvements of the theoretical and experimental precision are considered. Abstract Note  The Zamolodchikov ctheorem has led to important new insights in the understanding of the Renormalisation Group (RG) and the geometry of the space of QFTs. The present primer introduces and reviews the parallel developments of the search for a higherdimensional generalisation of the ctheorem and of the Local RG (LRG). The idea of renormalisation with positiondependent couplings, running under local Weyl scaling, is traced from its early realisations to the elegant modern formalism of the LRG. The key r??le of the associated Weyl consistency conditions in establishing RG flow equations for the coefficients of the trace anomaly in curved spacetime, and their relation to the ctheorem and fourdimensional atheorem, is explained in detail. A number of different derivations of the ctheorem in two dimensions are presented and subsequently generalised to four dimensions. The obstructions to establishing monotonic Cfunctions related to the trace anomaly coefficients in four dimensions are explained. The possibility of deriving an atheorem for the coefficient of the EulerGaussBonnet density is explored, initially by formulating the QFT on maximally symmetric spaces. Then the formulation of the weak atheorem using a dispersion relation for fourpoint functions is presented. Finally, the application of the LRG to the issue of limit cycles in theories with a global symmetry is described, shedding new light on the geometry of the space of couplings in QFT
