Abstract Note | This book bridges the gap between advances in the communities of computer science and physics--namely machine learning and statistical physics. It contains diverse but relevant topics in statistical physics, complex systems, network theory, and machine learning. Examples of such topics are: predicting missing links, higher-order generative modeling of networks, inferring network structure by tracking the evolution and dynamics of digital traces, recommender systems, and diffusion processes. The book contains extended versions of high-quality submissions received at the workshop, Dynamics On and Of Complex Networks (doocn.org), together with new invited contributions. The chapters will benefit a diverse community of researchers. The book is suitable for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and professors of various disciplines including sociology, physics, mathematics, and computer science |

Title | Complex Networks X : Proceedings of the 10th Conference on Complex Networks CompleNet 2019 |
Author(s) | Cornelius, Sean P;Granell Martorell, Clara;G??mez-Garde??es, Jes??s;Gon??alves, Bruno |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | X, 183 p. 58 illus., 49 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working across domains and research disciplines to measure, model, and visualize complex networks. It collects the works presented at the 10th International Conference on Complex Networks (CompleNet) in Taragona, Spain, March, 2019. With roots in physical, information and social science, the study of complex networks provides a formal set of mathematical methods, computational tools and theories to describe, prescribe and predict dynamics and behaviors of complex systems. Despite their diversity, whether the systems are made up of physical, technological, informational, or social networks, they share many common organizing principles and thus can be studied with similar approaches. This book provides a view of the state-of-the-art in this dynamic field and covers topics such as group decision-making, brain and cellular connectivity, network controllability and resiliency, online activism, recommendation systems, and cyber security. This text will appeal to students and researchers in the field. |

Title | Temporal Network Theory |
Author(s) | Holme, Petter;Saram??ki, Jari |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | VIII, 375 p. 100 illus., 84 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book focuses on the theoretical side of temporal network research and gives an overview of the state of the art in the field. Curated by two pioneers in the field who have helped to shape it, the book contains contributions from many leading researchers. Temporal networks fill the border area between network science and time-series analysis and are relevant for the modeling of epidemics, optimization of transportation and logistics, as well as understanding biological phenomena. Network theory has proven, over the past 20 years to be one of the most powerful tools for the study and analysis of complex systems. Temporal network theory is perhaps the most recent significant development in the field in recent years, with direct applications to many of the "big data" sets. This monograph will appeal to students, researchers and professionals alike interested in theory and temporal networks, a field that has grown tremendously over the last decade |

Title | Putting Social Media and Networking Data in Practice for Education, Planning, Prediction and Recommendation |
Author(s) | Kaya, Mehmet;Birinci, ??uayip;Kawash, Jalal;Alhajj, Reda |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2020. |
Description | XIII, 237 p. 68 illus., 51 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book focusses on recommendation, behavior, and anomaly, among of social media analysis. First, recommendation is vital for a variety of applications to narrow down the search space and to better guide people towards educated and personalized alternatives. In this context, the book covers supporting students, food venue, friend and paper recommendation to demonstrate the power of social media data analysis. Secondly, this book treats behavior analysis and understanding as important for a variety of applications, including inspiring behavior from discussion platforms, determining user choices, detecting following patterns, crowd behavior modeling for emergency evacuation, tracking community structure, etc. Third, fraud and anomaly detection have been well tackled based on social media analysis. This has is illustrated in this book by identifying anomalous nodes in a network, chasing undetected fraud processes, discovering hidden knowledge, detecting clickbait, etc. With this wide coverage, the book forms a good source for practitioners and researchers, including instructors and students |

Title | Adventure Diffusion : From Meandering Molecules to the Spreading of Plants, Humans, and Ideas |
Author(s) | Vogl, Gero |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | X, 157 p. 54 illus., 32 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This easy-to read book looks at the many ways in which diffusion bears on processes that involve dispersion, starting from the Brownian motion of molecules, covering the invasion of exotic plants, migration of populations, epidemics, and extending to the spreading of languages and ideas. Recently, there has been a growing interest in understanding migrations, diffusion and spreading outside the ???hard??? natural sciences of physics and chemistry, for example the spreading of plants introduced as a result of globalization. Another fascinating story is that of human migration in the distant past, i.e. the immigration of our ancestors who brought agriculture from the Near East, or the fast spread of the Palaeo-Indians into the Americas after the end of the Ice Age. Likewise, the spread of languages in the past, and even more so the current spread and retreat of languages will be described here in terms of diffusion. By understanding these principles, there is hope that some of the less common languages that are threatened by globalization can be saved. Another important implication discussed by the author concerns the outbreak of epidemics; these may be mitigated if we understand their spreading mechanism. Last but not least the spreading of ideas and innovations, a process which changes the world sometimes faster than we wish, can also be usefully described in this picture |
