Title | Can Science Be Witty? : Science Communication Between Critique and Cabaret |
Author(s) | Weitze, Marc-Denis;Goede, Wolfgang Chr;Heckl, Wolfgang M |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2023. |
Description | IX, 244 p. 31 illus., 28 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Can Science Be Witty? takes a close look at an element of modern science communication that is as innovative as it is promising for the future: comedy! Readers are guided through lucidly presented academic theory as well as exciting hands-on and best-practice examples from renowned practitioners and cabaret artists: - What do sheep cheese and car tires have in common? - Can laughter tear down walls? - How does "Die Anstalt" work? - How does magic create knowledge? - Is there humor in museums? - Serving suggestion for the Holy Spirit - Dictatorship of stupidity - And much more! But it's not all just funny. Comedy can also take away some of the biting sharpness of criticism, making it digestible, even palatable, for the addressees. Can Science Be Witty? navigates between critique and cabaret and deals with comedy in various forms from different perspectives. 22 contributions show how the results of science, researchand technology can be brought to the general public in new ways. In particular, they also demonstrate how humour can be used as a critical and questioning force - valuable for all types of communication and helpful in making them more witty in the future. The translation was done with the help of the artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The text has subsequently been revised further by the original editors in order to refine the work stylistically. |

Title | Communicating Space Exploration : Challenges, State of the Art and Future Trends |
Author(s) | Drigani, Fulvio |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2020. |
Description | XV, 114 p. 49 illus., 43 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book offers an enlightening analysis of the ways in which the communication of space explorations has evolved in response to political and social developments and the availability of new media and communication tools. Important challenges to effective communication are discussed, including the diversity of audiences, the risks associated with space missions, and continuing skepticism about the benefits of space research despite the many associated day-to-day applications. In addition, future trends in communication are examined with reference to likely trends in space exploration over the coming century. Besides space communication for the public, the need for targeted messaging to each group of stakeholders ??? decision makers, media, opinion leaders, the scientific community, and industry ??? is analyzed in detail. A series of case studies of particular space missions, both successful and unsuccessful, is presented to illustrate key issues. The book has significant implications for the communication of science in general and will be of interest to a wide audience, including space scientists, science communication professionals, people fascinated by exploration and discovery, stakeholders, and educators |

Title | Particle Panic! : How Popular Media and Popularized Science Feed Public Fears of Particle Accelerator Experiments |
Author(s) | Larsen, Kristine |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | XV, 194 p. 48 illus., 44 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | From novels and short stories to television and film, popular media has made a cottage industry of predicting the end of the world will be caused by particle accelerators. Rather than allay such fears, public pronouncements by particle scientists themselves often unwittingly fan the flames of hysteria. This book surveys media depictions of particle accelerator physics and the perceived dangers these experiments pose. In addition, it describes the role of scientists in propagating such fears and misconceptions, offering as a conclusion ways in which the scientific community could successfully allay such misplaced fears through more effective communication strategies. The book is aimed at the general reader interested in separating fact from fiction in the field of high-energy physics, at science educators and communicators, and, last but not least, at all scientists concerned about these issues. About the Author Kristine M Larsen holds a Ph.D. in Physics and is currently a professor at Central Connecticut State University, New Britain, CT, in the Geological Sciences Department. She has published a number of books, among them The Women Who Popularized Geology in the 19th Century (Springer, 2017), The Mythological Dimensions of Neil Gaiman (eds. Anthony Burdge, Jessica Burke, and Kristine Larsen. Kitsune Press, 2012. Recipient of the Gold Medal for Science Fiction/Fantasy in the 2012 Florida Publishing Association Awards), The Mythological Dimensions of Doctor Who (eds. Anthony Burdge, Jessica Burke, and Kristine Larsen. Kitsune Press, 2010), as well as Stephen Hawking: A Biography (Greenwood Press, 2005) and Cosmology 101 (Greenwood Press, (2007) |
