TitleIngenious Principles of Nature : Do We Reckon With Nature Or Nature Reckons With Us
Author(s)K??ppers, E. W. Udo
PublicationWiesbaden, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden, 2022.
DescriptionXXI, 511 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteHow can the book's title be paraphrased in one succinct sentence? By Arthur Schopenhauer's handed-down statement: "Any stupid boy can crush a beetle, but not all the professors in the world can make one." Animals and plants of interconnected nature have learned over billions of years, through perfect adaptive adjustment to their environment, to achieve peak performance for their survival, whose effective and sustainable principles are unparalleled in our technology-infused environment. This immeasurably rich natural treasure trove of materials, tools, techniques, processes and organizations can help to steer the misguided development strategies of us humans, which in addition to extraordinary technical advances also produce extraordinary catastrophic consequential problems, into forward-looking paths capable of living and surviving. In view of the accumulation of damaged nature by us humans, both of whose existence is inextricably linked, new sustainable development strategies are inevitable. These can only be done with and not against nature. It will be a necessary struggle for survival against the "masters of humanity", against their pernicious, political and economic treatment of nature. which affects us all. From the contents - The inexhaustible wealth of evolutionary adaptive solutions - 22 evolutionary principles from fauna and flora - Operational principles of nature - Beyond the exhaustive wealth of technospheric maximum solutions - Bio-technospheric transformations - 30 workable resolutions - Konrad Lorenz "Eight Deadly Sins of Civilized Mankind" - Noam Chomsky's battle against the "masters of humanity" About the author As an engineering scientist and bionic scientist, Dr.-Ing. E. W. Udo K??ppers devotes his interest preferably to the complex border area between nature and technology. Associated with this are systemic thinking and acting, highly mindful organizational processes, accompanied by practical impact network methods. Besides activities in his working group ??K??ppers-Systemdenken?? (since 2000) he taught at different universities with the core module Interdisciplinary Competence until 2021. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation

Abstract NoteThis book collects the latest research results on security-related advanced technologies. The chapters contain relevant and interesting topics from numerous research. Data science and artificial intelligence research nowadays one of the most important topics for the industry and the security sectors. The autonomy and counter-autonomy research topic are also very interesting. Autonomous cars have become a part of the common days, but their safe and secure application is not assured. The research results in this field want to support and assure safe and secure autonomous applications in our quotidian life. Also, the safe and secure robotics in the industries and the defence assure a high standard of living and the given research results in this area can use to increase it. The researchers work on it and publish the results that can be interesting for the other researchers and the innovators, but also the industrial part members. The researchers work on it and publish the results that can be interesting for the other researchers and the innovators, but also the industrial part members. Communication is a part of our life, but the communication systems mesh all around the world. Communication is the basis of modern life because without it life stop. One other interesting and very important research area is the material sciences. Virtual life cannot exist without hardware and materials. The new technical applications require new materials, that can suffice the mechanical and physical, chemical properties demand. Nowadays a common requirement of the materials the high strength and lightweight. Researchers want to serve the industrial requests and innovate new composite materials or increase the properties of the material through a new technological process. The authors publish the latest results of the security-related research area including the newest innovations and technologies which rise the interest of the defence and the modern industries even the interest of other researchers

TitleFrom Stars to States : A Manifest for Science in Society
Author(s)Courvoisier, Thierry J.-L
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXVI, 67 p. 15 illus., 11 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe aim of this essay is to understand the relationship between knowledge and society and to reflect on the links between science and political decision making. The text evolved from a number of reflections the author made while president of the European Astronomical Society, president of the Swiss Academy of Sciences and vice-president of the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC). The book starts by using astronomy as a showcase for what science brings to society in terms of intellectual enrichment, of practical tools and of societal inputs. It then turns to looking generally at science as a human endeavour for which pleasure is a prime motivation and it describes the efforts made by researchers to rationalise their findings, thus making them universally acceptable. The author also describes the role of science in shaping our environment and discusses resulting responsibility of the scientists with respect to the evolution of the world. As part of an analysis of the relationship between science and policy the author describes the way in which scientists can (and must) bring knowledge in the political decision making process. The argument is closed with considerations on global governance, while the conclusion puts evidence based decision making processes in relation with the more emotional aspects of our behaviour. The readership of the book is intended to be all scientists involved in ???science for policy??? activities, as well as those who should become more active in this domain. This includes, but is not limited to, all members of science academies. Astronomers will find specific elements to help them think about their science. The intended readers of the book also include civil servants and policy makers who develop legislation and societal action in domains in which a solid knowledge base is important. The book should furthermore be of interest to citizens following public life and all those worried by the ???post evidence??? trends in policy

TitleSpace Mining and Manufacturing : Off-World Resources and Revolutionary Engineering Techniques
Author(s)Sivolella, Davide
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXI, 207 p. 102 illus., 38 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book produces convincing evidence that exploiting the potential of space could help solve many environmental and social issues affecting our planet, such as pollution, overcrowding, resource depletion and conflicts, economic inequality, social unrest, economic instability and unemployment. It also touches on the legal problems that will be encountered with the implementation of the new technologies and new laws that will need to be enacted and new organizations that will need to be formed to deal with these changes. This proposition for a space economy is not science fiction, but well within the remit of current or under development technologies. Numerous technologies are described and put together to form a coherent and feasible road map that, if implemented, could lead humankind towards a brighter future.
