TitleFundamentals of atomic and molecular physics
Author(s)Robert L. Brooks
PublicationNew York, Springer, 2013.
Descriptionx, 179p.
Series(Undergraduate Lecture Notes in Physics)
Abstract NoteThe Fundamentals of Atomic and Molecular Physics is intended as an introduction to the field for advanced undergraduates who have taken quantum mechanics. Each chapter builds upon the previous, using the same tools and methods throughout. As the students progress through the book, their ability to use these tools will steadily increase, along with their confidence in their efficacy. The book treats the two-electron atom as the simplest example of the many-electron atom—as opposed to using techniques that are not applicable to many-electron atoms—so that it is unnecessary to develop additional equations when turning to multielectron atoms, such as carbon. External fields are treated using both perturbation theory and direct diagonalization and spontaneous emission is developed from first principles. Only diatomic molecules are considered with the hydrogen molecular ion and neutral molecule treated in some detail. This comprehensive coverage of the quantum mechanics of complex atoms and simple diatomic molecules, developed from the very basic components, is extremely useful for students considering graduate studies in any area of physics

TitleUnderstanding physics
Author(s)Michael Mansfield;Colm O'sullivan
Edition2nd
PublicationChichester, John Wiley and Sons, 2011.
Descriptionxvii, 675p.
Abstract NoteBook is a comprehensive, yet compact, introductory physics textbook aimed at physics undergraduates and also at engineers and other scientists taking a general physics course. Written with today's students in mind, this text covers the core material required by an introductory course in a clear and refreshing way. A second colour is used throughout to enhance learning and understanding. Each topic is introduced from first principles so that the text is suitable for students without a prior background in physics. At the same time the book is designed to enable students to proceed easily to subsequent courses in physics and may be used to support such courses. Mathematical methods (in particular, calculus and vector analysis) are introduced within the text as the need arises and are presented in the context of the physical problems which they are used to analyse. Particular aims of the book are to demonstrate to students that the easiest, most concise and least ambiguous way to express and describe phenomena in physics is by using the language of mathematics and that, at this level, the total amount of mathematics required is neither large nor particularly demanding. 'Modern physics' topics (relativity and quantum mechanics) are introduced at an earlier stage than is usually found in introductory textbooks and are integrated with the more 'classical' material from which they have evolved. This book encourages students to develop an intuition for relativistic and quantum concepts at as early a stage as is practicable. The text takes a reflective approach towards the scientific method at all stages and, in keeping with the title of the text, emphasis is placed on understanding of, and insight into, the material presented.

TitleUltraviolet and x-ray spectroscopy of the solar atmosphere
Author(s)Kenneth J. H. philips;Uri Feldman;Enrico Landi
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2008.
Descriptionx, 349p.
Series(Cambridge Astrophysics Series)
Abstract NoteThe solar atmosphere, above the Sun's surface layers, reaches mega-kelvin temperatures and high levels of dynamic activity through processes involving a pervading magnetic field. This book explores one of the principal means of understanding the solar atmosphere, its ultraviolet and soft X-ray emission. The ultraviolet and X-ray spectra of the Sun's atmosphere provide valuable information about its nature – the heat and density of its various parts, its dynamics, and chemical composition. The principles governing spectral line and continuous emission, and how spectral studies lead to deductions about physical properties, are described, together with spacecraft instrumentation from Skylab, SolarMax, Yohkoh, SOHO, TRACE, and Hinode. With introductions to atomic physics and diagnostic techniques used by solar spectroscopists, a list of emission lines in ultraviolet and soft X-ray regions, and a glossary of terms, this is an ideal reference for graduate students and researchers in astrophysics and solar physics.

TitleYou are wrong, Mr Einstein!: Newton, Einstein, Heisenberg and Feynman discussing quantum mechanics
Author(s)Harald Fritzsch
PublicationNew Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2011.
Descriptionxxi, 178p.
Abstract NoteWerner Heisenberg and Richard Feynman find quantum physics fascinating and necessary for understanding the atoms. Albert Einstein dislikes it and Isaac Newton does not understand it, which is not surprising. This is the scenario for animated discussions between five people. Harald Fritzsch brings together Newton and the three great physicists of the 20th century in an imaginary meeting. His “alter ego” Adrian Haller moderates the discussions. By means of questions and answers the whole cosmos of quantum physics is described in a simple way, easily understandable non-physicists. The beginnings of quantum theory and atomic physics as well as the importance of quantum physics for our daily life — these and many more topics are the subjects of the interesting and fascinating discussions.

TitleAtoms, molecules and photons: An introduction to atomic-, molecular- and quantum-physics
Author(s)Wolfgang Demtroder
PublicationBerlin, Springer, 2006.
Descriptionxv; 571p.
Contents NoteBook is aimed as an introduction to the microscopic world of atoms, molecules and photons. It illustrates how our knowledge about the microscopic structure of matter and radiation came about and which crucial experiments forced an extension and refinement of existing classical theories, culmination in the development of quantum theory, which is now accepted as the basic theory of atomic and molecular physcis.
