TitleVariational Approach to Gravity Field Theories : From Newton to Einstein and Beyond
Author(s)Vecchiato, Alberto
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXII, 361 p. 7 illus., 4 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book offers a detailed and stimulating account of the Lagrangian, or variational, approach to general relativity and beyond. The approach more usually adopted when describing general relativity is to introduce the required concepts of differential geometry and derive the field and geodesic equations from purely geometrical properties. Demonstration of the physical meaning then requires the weak field approximation of these equations to recover their Newtonian counterparts. The potential downside of this approach is that it tends to suit the mathematical mind and requires the physicist to study and work in a completely unfamiliar environment. In contrast, the approach to general relativity described in this book will be especially suited to physics students. After an introduction to field theories and the variational approach, individual sections focus on the variational approach in relation to special relativity, general relativity, and alternative theories of gravity. Throughout the text, solved exercises and examples are presented. The book will meet the needs of both students specializing in theoretical physics and those seeking a better understanding of particular aspects of the subject

TitleUnderstanding Gaia : A Mission to Map the Galaxy
Author(s)Bernardi, Gabriella;Vecchiato, Alberto
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Praxis 2. Springer International Publishing, 2019.
DescriptionXVII, 158 p. 55 illus., 45 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is the first to provide a comprehensive, readily understandable report on the European Space Agency???s Gaia mission that will meet the needs of a general audience. It takes the reader on an exciting journey of discovery, explaining how such a scientific satellite is made, presenting the scientific results available from Gaia to date, and examining how the collected data will be used and their likely scientific consequences. The Gaia mission will provide a complete and high-precision map of the positions, distances, and motions of the stars in our galaxy. It will revolutionize our knowledge on the origin and evolution of the Milky Way, on the effects of mysterious dark matter, and on the birth and evolution of stars and extrasolar planets. The Gaia satellite was launched in December 2013 and has a foreseen operational lifetime of five to six years, culminating in a final stellar catalogue in the early 2020s. This book will appeal to all who have an interest in the mission and the profound impact that it will have on astronomy.
