Title | Astronomy Communication |
Author(s) | Heck, Andre;Madsen, C |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003. |
Description | IX, 226 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Astronomyhasalwaysbeenoneoftheeasiestofthesciencestoconveyto the public. That is partly because it produces spectacular pictures that can be explained (at least in part) and admired, partly because understanding of astronomy usually does not depend upon a knowledge of a complex cl- si?cation system or esoteric terminology, and partly because its extremes in distances and times challenge our imagination and philosophies. Most scientists enjoy sharing with others the discoveries made by th- selves and their colleagues. The primary purpose of scienti?c research is to discover, to learn, and to understand. When we succeed, we enjoy sh- ing that understanding. Education is most pleasurable when our audience wishes to learn and we have something important to convey. A?eldthatdoesnotcommunicatee?ectivelywiththepublicsoonlooses its interest and support. Author Andr?? e Heck explains the many di?erent ways in which professional communication now occurs while Leslie Sage explains how such communication should be done. Astronomy done with spacecraft and large equipment is very expensive and the funds for those ultimately come from the public. The cost of astronomy prorated over the number of research astronomers is perhaps the highest in all the sciences. If astronomers do not share their results with the public, they will loose its support. However, for most astronomers the desire to share and educate dominates over the pragmatic need to win public support. With the advent of new communication techniques (television, videos, CDs, DVDs, animation, simulations) we have new methods to commu- cate, in addition to the conventional ones of the printed and spoken word |

Title | Information Handling in Astronomy - Historical Vistas |
Author(s) | Heck, Andre |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2003. |
Description | XII, 298 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is dedicated to the memory of Gis??le Mersch whose life ended prematurely in June 2002. Back in the 1970s, when few people were using them, Gis??le introduced me to the arcane secrets of then advanced m- tivariate statistical methodologies. I was already involved in more classical statistical studies undertaken at Paris Observatory with Jean Jung: developing and applying maxim- likelihood algorithms to stellar photometric and kinematic data in order to derive absolute luminosities, distances and velocities in the solar neighb- hood. But what could be envisaged with those methodologies was something of another dimension: for the first time, I could really see how to extract information from massive amounts of data without calling for elaborated physical or mechanical theories. Several pioneering applications were developed under Gis??le???s guidance and with her collaboration to study the delicate interface between spect- scopic and photometric data. Thus errors in spectral classifications were investigated as well as predictions of spectral classifications from pho- metric indices (see Heck 1976, Heck et al. 1977, Heck & Mersch 1980 and Mersch & Heck 1980), with very interesting results for the time. Gis??le also took part in studies of period determination algorithms (see Mersch & Heck 1981, Manfroid et al. 1983 and Heck et al. 1985) |

Title | Telemedicine : Medicine and Communication |
Author(s) | Buzug, Thorsten M;Handels, Heinz;Holz, Dietrich |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer US, 2001. |
Description | XIV, 213 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Within the various aspects of life-science technologies medicine and information technology will change next millennium's quality-of-life fundamentally. Thanks to the rapid growth of telecommunication industry and the success and popularity of the internet the face of medicine will essentially change, because information technology is expected to play a major role in future health care systems. The conference MEDICOM 2000 is a discussion forum on fast and cost efficient patient-data exchange systems between doctors' offices, medical laboratories, telearchive services, health care insurances, highly specialized experts in hospitals etc. The conference brought together scientific, medical and application experts from university, clinical and commercial sites of both areas - medicine and communication - to stimulate synergy between these rapidly evolving future technologies. We would like to acknowledge all the parties who contributed to the success of the conference. Especially, we would like to thank Gisela Niedzwetzki and Waltraud Ott for secretarial support as well as Dirk Thomsen for web mastering. Additionally, we have to acknowledge the valuable support of Holger Dorle, Thomas Giese, Peter Just, Stefan Klockner, Heike Lahr and Kerstin Ltidtke-Buzug during the conference |

Title | Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy : Volume 5 |
Author(s) | HECK, Andre |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2004. |
Description | X, 317 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | Anyone who doubts that astronomy is enjoying a golden age has only to browse the pages of Organizations and Strategies in Astronomy, Vol. 5. Our golden age is defined not only by the enormity of new discoveries of dark energy, dark matter, extra-solar planets, and the evolution of Mars, but also by the breadth, diversity, and creativity within our community. This volume records our history, in a period of such rapid change and growth that individual astronomers are hard-pressed to keep abreast of their own fields and neighborhoods, much less of developments world-wide. Since the 1950's, changes in the landscape of astronomy are manifold. We have witnessed two epochs of big telescope construction, the 4-meter class telescopes of the '60s and '70s and the 8-to lO-meter class telescopes of the '90s, continuing through today. We accomplished the transition from photographic to digital data, and we continue to improve the size and sen?? sitivity of astronomical detectors. We have witnessed the flowering of radio astronomy and the opening of the full electromagnetic spectrum through space astronomy. We have seen the growth of national and international astronomy facilities, and a dramatic broadening of the accessibility of data, both through observing facilities available through open competition based on scientific merit and through deep, rich archives of data |

Title | Developing Basic Space Science World-Wide : A Decade of UN/ESA Workshops |
Author(s) | Wamsteker, Willem;Albrecht, Rudolf;Haubold, Hans J |
Publication | Dordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 2004. |
Description | XVI, 504 p. 147 illus., 21 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | ? J. Andersen Niels Bohr Institute for Astronomy Physics and Geophysics Astronomical Observatory Copenhagen ja@astro.ku.dk The development of astronomy worldwide begins at the roots: Already from childhood, humans of all nations and civilizations seem to share an innate fascination with the sky. Yet, people in different regions of the world have vastly different possibilities for pursuing this interest. In wealthy, industrialised societies the way is open to a school or higher education in science, possibly leading to a career in astronomy or basic or applied space science for the benefit of the country as well as the individual. In other regions, neither the financial nor the trained human resources are sufficient to offer that avenue to the future of the young generation, or those intellectual resources to the development of their country. This book addresses ways and means by which these obstacles can be, if not fully overcome, then at least significantly reduced |

Title | The Meaning and Value of Spaceflight : Public Perceptions |
Author(s) | Bainbridge, William Sims |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2015. |
Description | XI, 225 p. 1 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents the most serious and comprehensive study, by far, of American public perceptions about the meaning of space exploration, analyzing vast troves of questionnaire data collected by many researchers and polling firms over a span of six decades and anchored in influential social science theories.?? It doesn't simply report the percentages who held various opinions, but employs sophisticated statistical techniques to answer profound questions and achieve fresh discoveries. Both the Bush and the Obama administrations have cut back severely on fundamental research in space science and engineering.??Understanding better what space exploration means for citizens can contribute to charting a feasible but progressive course. Since the end of the Space Race between the US and the USSR, social scientists have almost completely ignored space exploration as a topic for serious analysis, and this book seeks to revive that kind of contribution. The author communicates the insights in a lucid style, not only intelligible but interesting to readers from a variety of backgrounds.?? |

Title | Networks of Echoes : Imitation, Innovation and Invisible Leaders |
Author(s) | West, Bruce J;Turalska, Malgorzata;Grigolini, Paolo |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2014. |
Description | XI, 225 p. 86 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Networks of Echoes: Imitation, Innovation and Invisible Leaders is a mathematically rigorous and data rich book on a fascinating area of the science and engineering of social webs.?? There are hundreds of complex network phenomena whose statistical properties are described by inverse power laws.?? The phenomena of interest are not arcane events that we encounter only fleetingly, but are events that dominate our lives. We examine how this intermittent statistical behavior intertwines itself with what appears to be the organized activity of social groups.?? The book is structured as answers to a sequence of questions such as: How are decisions reached in elections and boardrooms??? How is the stability of a society undermined by zealots and committed minorities, and how is that stability re-established??? Can we learn to answer such questions about human behavior by studying the way flocks of birds retain their formation when eluding a predator??? These questions and others are answered using a generic model of a complex dynamic network???one whose global behavior is determined by a symmetric interaction among individuals based on social imitation.??The complexity of the network is manifest in time series resulting from self-organized critical dynamics that have divergent first and second moments, are non-stationary, non-ergodic, and non-Poisson.?? How phase transitions in the network dynamics influence such activity as decision making is a fascinating story and provides a context for introducing many of the mathematical ideas necessary for understanding complex networks in general.?? The decision making model (DMM) is selected to emphasize that there are features of complex webs that supersede specific mechanisms and need to be understood from a general perspective.?? This insightful overview of recent tools and their uses may serve as an introduction and curriculum guide in related courses |

Title | Co-evolution of Intelligent Socio-technical Systems : Modelling and Applications in Large Scale Emergency and Transport Domains |
Author(s) | Mitleton-Kelly, Evangelia |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013. |
Description | VI, 293 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | As the interconnectivity between humans through technical devices is becoming ubiquitous, the next step is already in the making: ambient intelligence, i.e. smart (technical) environments, which will eventually play the same active role in communication as the human players, leading to a co-evolution in all domains where real-time communication is essential. This topical volume, based on the findings of the Socionical European research project, gives equal attention to two highly relevant domains of applications: transport, specifically traffic, dynamics from the viewpoint of a socio-technical interaction and evacuation scenarios for large-scale emergency situations. Care was taken to investigate as much as possible the limits of scalability and to combine the modeling using complex systems science approaches with relevant data analysis |
