TitleEnergy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy
Author(s)Reimer, Ludwig
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995.
DescriptionXIII, 425 p. 157 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteEnergy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy (EFTEM) presents a summary of the electron optics, the electron-specimen interactions, and the operation and contrast modes of this new field of analytical electron microscopy. The electron optics of filter lenses and the progress in the correction of aberrations are discussed in detail. An evaluation of our present knowledge of plasmon losses and inner-shell ionisations is of increasing interest for a quantitative application of EFTEM in materials and life sciences. This can be realized not only by filtering the elastically scattered electrons but mainly by imaging and analyzing with inelastically scattered electrons at different energy losses up to 2000 eV. The strength of EFTEM is the combination of the modes of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), Electron Spectroscopic Imaging (ESI) and Diffraction (ESD) and of energy filtering Reflection Electron Microscopy (REM) in one instrument

TitlePhysics of Amphiphilic Layers : Proceedings of the Workshop, Les Houches, France February 10???19, 1987
Author(s)Meunier, Jacques;Langevin, Dominique;Boccara, Nino
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1987.
DescriptionXI, 399 p : online resource
Abstract NoteAmphiphilic layers play essential roles in the behaviour of a great variety of disperse systems such as micelles, microemulsions and vesicles. They can also exist as isolated mono- or bilayers, or constitute extended liquid crystalline structures. Although the properties of these different systems may at first sight seem unrelated, theoretical interpretations of them depend on several common concepts. This was the reason for bringing together scientists working in this area for the International Winter School on the Physics of Amphiphilic Layers, which was held at Les Houches, 10-18 February, 1987. The topics treated in the proceedings volume are mono- and bilayers, interactive forces between layers (with special emphasis on steric forces), ordered structures (in particular swollen lamellar phases and defects), vesicles, micelles (including polymer-like systems), microemulsions (especially random bicontinuous structures) and porous media. The importance of thermal fluctuations in the amphiphilic layers is stressed. Recent results are presented and literature references allow readers not familiar with the subject to find any background information they require

TitleBiological Effects of Magnetic and Electromagnetic Fields
Author(s)Ueno, S
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1996.
DescriptionX, 244 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe International Symposium on Biological Effects of Magnetic and Electrom- netic Fields was held from September 3-4, 1993 at Kyushu University in Fukuoka . Japan . Originally, it was only intended to be an informal gathering of many scientists who had accepted my invitation to visit Kyushu University after the XXIVth General Assembly of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), held in Kyoto prior to our symposium . However, since so many distinguished scientists were able to come, it was decided that a more formal symposium would be possible . It was a very productive symposium and, as a result, many of the guests consented that it would be a good idea to gather all the information put forth at the meeting and have it published. In addition, although they were unfortunately unable to attend the symposium . many other distinguished scientists had also expressed their wish to contribute to this effort and, in so doing. help to increase understanding in this, as yet, relatively immature field of science . The question of both positive and negative effects of magnetic and electromagnetic fields on biological systems has become more and more important in our world today as they

TitleNeuronal Cooperativity
Author(s)Kr??ger, J??rgen
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionXII, 302 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSoon after the technique of micro electrode recording had become a routine method in the 1950s, many researchers felt that an obvious next step was to in?? vestigate the behaviour of larger networks of interacting cells. However, despite many early efforts, very little progress was made in that direction: a conceptual basis had not yet evolved, and the computer as an analytical tool was not avail?? able. This has now changed, with the result that the cooperation of neurons is again becoming a focus of interest. In 1987, with the support of the Volkswagen Foundation, I was able to organize a conference on the subject of neuronal cooperativity near Freiburg, W. Germany, bringing together theoreticians and experimentalists working in this field. It became clear that many new theoretical concepts had evolved since the early days but that experiments on the subject were still difficult. Later, with the encouragement of Professor H. Haken, editor of the Springer Series in Synergetics, I decided to ask a number of experimentalists, many of whom had participated in the conference, to contribute to a book. The aim was not to focus exclusively on the newest results but rather to give an overall idea of how the difficult question of cooperativity can be approached experimentally

TitleSupramolecular Structure and Function
Author(s)Pifat, Greta
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1983.
DescriptionVIII, 366 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe molecular basis of life has been a rapidly growing field of science. There is perhaps no other field where such diverse profiles of scientists, ranging from applied mathematicians and theoretical physicists to experimental biologists and medical doctors (physicians), are compelled to communicate and even to col?? laborate. This diversity makes the exchange of information richer but at the same time more cumbersome. One way to facilitate the exchange of information and to overcome the barriers between the different languages used by physicists, chemists and biologists is to organize a meeting on a subject of common interest. A par?? ticularly suitable form of such a meeting for younger scientists is a school at an undergraduate or postgraduate level. This volume contains a collection of lectures presented at the International Summer School in Biophysics, held under the title "Supramolecular Structure and Function" in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, in September 1981. The topics discussed at the school were inter- and intramolecular interactions in biological systems, and structure, organization and function of biological macromole?? cules and supramolecular structures. Although not all the lectures could be prepared in a written form on time for publication, we hope that the present volume contains valuable up-to-date infor?? mation on various aspects of the molecular basis of life. We wish to express our gratitude to the eminent authors and to state that, having received so much valuable assistance from them, we as editors can only attach our names to apologies for any erro~s that may remain

TitleCooperative Dynamics in Complex Physical Systems : Proceedings of the Second Yukawa International Symposium, Kyoto, Japan, August 24???27, 1988
Author(s)Takayama, Hajime
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1989.
DescriptionXVI, 340 p : online resource
Abstract NoteMany novel cooperative phenomena found in a variety of systems studied by scientists can be treated using the uniting principles of synergetics. Examples are frustrated and random systems, polymers, spin glasses, neural networks, chemical and biological systems, and fluids. In this book attention is focused on two main problems. First, how local, topological constraints (frustrations) can cause macroscopic cooperative behavior: related ideas initially developed for spin glasses are shown to play key roles also for optimization and the modeling of neural networks. Second, the dynamical constraints that arise from the nonlinear dynamics of the systems: the discussion covers turbulence in fluids, pattern formation, and conventional 1/f noise. The volume will be of interest to anyone wishing to understand the current development of work on complex systems, which is presently one of the most challenging subjects in statistical and condensed matter physics
