Title | Theoretical physics in your face: Selected correspondence of Sidney Coleman |
Author(s) | Aaron S Wright (ed.);Diana Coleman (ed.);David Kaiser (ed.) |
Publication | New Jersey, USA, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2023. |
Description | 478 p. |
Abstract Note | Sidney Coleman (1937-2007) was a renowned theoretical physicist, who taught for more than forty years at Harvard University. He contributed critical work on quantum field theory, high-energy particle physics, and cosmology. He was also a remarkably effective teacher who introduced generations of physicists to quantum field theory, mentoring several leading members in the field. His sense of humor and wit became legendary. This selection of his previously unpublished correspondence illuminates changes in theoretical physics and in academic life over the course of Coleman's illustrious career.
The letters show the depth of Coleman's activities and interests, including scinece fiction, space travel, and the US counter culture.
The volume also includes Coleman's legendary lecture "Quantum Mechanics in Your Face." |

Title | Theoretical and mathematical physics: Problems and Solutions |
Author(s) | Willi-Hans Steeb |
Publication | Singapore, World Scientific, 2019. |
Description | x, 722p. |
Abstract Note | This updated and extended edition of the book combines the topics provided in the two parts of the previous editions as well as new topics. It is a comprehensive compilation covering most areas in mathematical and theoretical physics. The book provides a collection of problems together with their detailed solutions which will prove to be valuable to students as well as to researchers in the fields of mathematics, physics, engineering and other sciences.
Each chapter provides a short introduction with the relevant definitions and notations. All relevant definitions are given. The topics range in difficulty from elementary to advanced. Almost all problems are solved in detail and most of the problems are self-contained. Stimulating supplementary problems are also provided in each chapter. Students can learn important principles and strategies required for problem solving. Teachers will also find this text useful as a supplement, since important concepts and techniques are developed in the problems. Introductory problems for both undergraduate and advanced undergraduate students are provided. More advanced problems together with their detailed solutions are collected, to meet the needs of graduate students and researchers. Problems included cover new fields in theoretical and mathematical physics such as tensor product, Lax representation, Bäcklund transformation, soliton equations, Hilbert space theory, uncertainty relation, entanglement, spin systems, Lie groups, Bose system, Fermi systems differential forms, Lie algebra valued differential forms, metric tensor fields, Hirota technique, Painlevé test, Bethe ansatz, Yang-Baxter relation, wavelets, gauge theory, differential geometry, string theory, chaos, fractals, complexity, ergodic theory, etc. A number of software implementations are also provided. |

Title | Course in theoretical physics |
Author(s) | P. J. Shepherd |
Publication | Chichester, John Wiley and Sons, 2013. |
Description | xvi, 465p. |
Abstract Note | This book is a comprehensive account of five extended modules covering the key branches of twentieth-century theoretical physics, taught by the author over a period of three decades to students on bachelor and master university degree courses in both physics and theoretical physics.
The modules cover nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, thermal and statistical physics, many-body theory, classical field theory (including special relativity and electromagnetism), and, finally, relativistic quantum mechanics and gauge theories of quark and lepton interactions, all presented in a single, self-contained volume. |

Title | Under the spell of Landau: When Theortical Physics was Shaping Destinies |
Author(s) | Mikhail Shifman (ed.) |
Publication | New Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2013. |
Description | xxii, 537p. |
Abstract Note | This invaluable collection of memoirs and reviews on scientific activities of the most prominent theoretical physicists belonging to the Landau School â Landau, Migdal, Zeldovich, Smorodinsky, Ter-Martirosyan, Kirzhnits, Gribov, Larkin and Anselm â are being published in English for the first time.
The main goal is to acquaint readers with the life and work of outstanding Soviet physicists who, to a large extent, shaped theoretical physics in the 1950sâ70s. Many intriguing details have remained unknown beyond the âIron Curtainâ which was dismantled only with the fall of the USSR. |
