TitleTheoretical physics in your face: Selected correspondence of Sidney Coleman
Author(s)Aaron S Wright (ed.);Diana Coleman (ed.);David Kaiser (ed.)
PublicationNew Jersey, USA, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2023.
Description478 p.
Abstract NoteSidney Coleman (1937-2007) was a renowned theoretical physicist, who taught for more than forty years at Harvard University. He contributed critical work on quantum field theory, high-energy particle physics, and cosmology. He was also a remarkably effective teacher who introduced generations of physicists to quantum field theory, mentoring several leading members in the field. His sense of humor and wit became legendary. This selection of his previously unpublished correspondence illuminates changes in theoretical physics and in academic life over the course of Coleman's illustrious career. The letters show the depth of Coleman's activities and interests, including scinece fiction, space travel, and the US counter culture. The volume also includes Coleman's legendary lecture "Quantum Mechanics in Your Face."

TitleQuantum theory of solids
Author(s)R.E. Peierls
PublicationOxford University Press 2001.
Abstract NoteThis book develops the quantum theory of solids from the basic principles of quantum mechanics. The emphasis is on a single statement of the ideas underlying the various approximations that have to be used in the study of this subject. Care is taken to separate sound arguments from conjecture. The treatment covers the electron theory of metals as well as the dynamics of crystals, including the author's work on the thermal conductivity of crystals.

TitleTheoretical and mathematical physics: Problems and Solutions
Author(s)Willi-Hans Steeb
PublicationSingapore, World Scientific, 2019.
Descriptionx, 722p.
Abstract NoteThis updated and extended edition of the book combines the topics provided in the two parts of the previous editions as well as new topics. It is a comprehensive compilation covering most areas in mathematical and theoretical physics. The book provides a collection of problems together with their detailed solutions which will prove to be valuable to students as well as to researchers in the fields of mathematics, physics, engineering and other sciences. Each chapter provides a short introduction with the relevant definitions and notations. All relevant definitions are given. The topics range in difficulty from elementary to advanced. Almost all problems are solved in detail and most of the problems are self-contained. Stimulating supplementary problems are also provided in each chapter. Students can learn important principles and strategies required for problem solving. Teachers will also find this text useful as a supplement, since important concepts and techniques are developed in the problems. Introductory problems for both undergraduate and advanced undergraduate students are provided. More advanced problems together with their detailed solutions are collected, to meet the needs of graduate students and researchers. Problems included cover new fields in theoretical and mathematical physics such as tensor product, Lax representation, Bäcklund transformation, soliton equations, Hilbert space theory, uncertainty relation, entanglement, spin systems, Lie groups, Bose system, Fermi systems differential forms, Lie algebra valued differential forms, metric tensor fields, Hirota technique, Painlevé test, Bethe ansatz, Yang-Baxter relation, wavelets, gauge theory, differential geometry, string theory, chaos, fractals, complexity, ergodic theory, etc. A number of software implementations are also provided.

TitleSleeping beauties in theoretical physics: 26 Surprising Insights
Author(s)Thanu Padmanabhan
PublicationCham, Springer, 2015.
Descriptionxvi, 302p.
Series(Lecture Notes in Physics)
Abstract NoteThis book addresses a fascinating set of questions in theoretical physics which will both entertain and enlighten all students, teachers and researchers and other physics aficionados. These range from Newtonian mechanics to quantum field theory and cover several puzzling issues that do not appear in standard textbooks. Some topics cover conceptual conundrums, the solutions to which lead to surprising insights; some correct popular misconceptions in the textbook discussion of certain topics; others illustrate deep connections between apparently unconnected domains of theoretical physics; and a few provide remarkably simple derivations of results which are not often appreciated. The connoisseur of theoretical physics will enjoy a feast of pleasant surprises skilfully prepared by an internationally acclaimed theoretical physicist. Each topic is introduced with proper background discussion and special effort is taken to make the discussion self-contained, clear and comprehensible to anyone with an undergraduate education in physics.
Contents NoteThe Grand Cube of Theoretical Physics; The Emergence of Classical Physics; Orbits of Planets are Circles!; The Importance of being Inverse-square; Potential surprises in Newtonian Gravity; Lagrange and his Points; Getting the most of it!; Surprises in Fluid Flows; Isochronous Curiosities: Classical and Quantum; Logarithms of Nature; Curved Spacetime for pedestrians; Black hole is a Hot Topic; Thomas and his Precession; When Thomas met Foucault; The One-body Problem; The Straight and Narrow Path of Waves; If Quantum Mechanics is the Paraxial Optics, then …; Make it Complex to Simplify; Nothing matters a lot; Radiation: Caterpillar becomes Butterfly; Photon: Wave and/or Particle; Angular Momentum without Rotation; Ubiquitous Random Walk; More on Random Walks: Circuits and a Tired Drunkard; Gravitational Instability of the Isothermal Sphere; Gravity bends electric field lines

TitleUnder the spell of Landau: When Theortical Physics was Shaping Destinies
Author(s)Mikhail Shifman (ed.)
PublicationNew Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2013.
Descriptionxxii, 537p.
Abstract NoteThis invaluable collection of memoirs and reviews on scientific activities of the most prominent theoretical physicists belonging to the Landau School — Landau, Migdal, Zeldovich, Smorodinsky, Ter-Martirosyan, Kirzhnits, Gribov, Larkin and Anselm — are being published in English for the first time. The main goal is to acquaint readers with the life and work of outstanding Soviet physicists who, to a large extent, shaped theoretical physics in the 1950s–70s. Many intriguing details have remained unknown beyond the “Iron Curtain” which was dismantled only with the fall of the USSR.
