Abstract NoteThis textbook provides an introductory presentation of all types of lasers. It contains a general description of the laser, a theoretical treatment and a characterization of its operation as it deals with gas, solid state, free-electron and semiconductor lasers. This expanded and updated second edition of the book presents a description of the dynamics of free-electron laser oscillation using a model introduced in the first edition that allows a reader to understand basic properties of a free-electron laser and makes the difference to ???conventional??? lasers. The discussions and the treatment of equations are presented in a way that a reader can immediately follow. The book addresses graduate and undergraduate students in science and engineering, featuring problems with solutions and over 400 illustrations

TitleA Course in Classical Physics 4 - Waves and Light
Author(s)Bettini, Alessandro
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXIX, 361 p. 189 illus., 12 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis fourth volume of a four-volume textbook covers the oscillations of systems with one or more degrees of freedom; the concept of waves, focusing on light and sound; phase and group velocities, their physical meaning, and their measurement; diffraction and interference of light; polarization phenomena; and the formation of images in the eye and in optical instruments. The textbook as a whole covers electromagnetism, mechanics, fluids and thermodynamics, and waves and light, and is designed to reflect the typical syllabus during the first two years of a calculus-based university physics program. Throughout all four volumes, particular attention is paid to in-depth clarification of conceptual aspects, and to this end the historical roots of the principal concepts are traced. Emphasis is also consistently placed on the experimental basis of the concepts, highlighting the experimental nature of physics. Whenever feasible at the elementary level, concepts relevant to more advanced courses in quantum mechanics and atomic, solid state, nuclear, and particle physics are included. The textbook offers an ideal resource for physics students, lecturers and, last but not least, all those seeking a deeper understanding of the experimental basics of physics.

TitleRelativistic Nonlinear Electrodynamics : The QED Vacuum and Matter in Super-Strong Radiation Fields
Author(s)Avetissian, Hamlet Karo
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXVII, 506 p. 59 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis revised edition of the author???s classic 2006 text offers a comprehensively updated review of the field of relativistic nonlinear??electrodynamics. It explores the interaction of strong and super-strong electromagnetic/laser radiation with the electromagnetic quantum vacuum and diverse types of matter ??? including free charged particles and antiparticles, acceleration beams, plasma and plasmous media.?? The appearance of laser sources of relativistic and ultra-relativistic intensities over the last decade has stimulated investigation of a large class of processes under such super-strong radiation fields. Revisions for this second edition reflect these developments and the book includes new chapters on Bremsstrahlung and nonlinear absorption of superintense radiation in plasmas, the nonlinear interaction of relativistic atoms with intense laser radiation, nonlinear interaction of strong laser radiation with Graphene, and relativistic nonlinear phenomena in solid-plasma targets under supershort laser pulses of ultrarelativistic intensities. The only book devoted to the subject of relativistic nonlinear electrodynamics, this second edition will be a valuable resource for??graduate students and researchers involved in any aspect of the field, including those working with intense x-ray ??? gamma-ray lasers, the new generation of small size laser-plasma accelerators of superhigh energies and high-brightness particle beams

DescriptionXV, 188 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book??provides a comprehensive overview of the operating principles and??technology of electron lenses in supercolliders.?? Electron lenses are a novel instrument for high energy particle accelerators, particularly for the energy-frontier??superconducting hadron colliders, including the Tevatron, RHIC, LHC and future very large hadron colliders. ??After reviewing the issues surrounding beam dynamics in supercolliders, the book offers an introduction to the electron lens method and its application.?? Further chapters describe??the technology behind??the electron lenses which have recently been proposed, built and employed for compensation of beam-beam effects and for collimation of high-energy high-intensity beams, for compensation of space-charge effects and several other applications in accelerators.??The book will be an invaluable resource for those involved in the??design, construction and??operation of the next generation of hadron colliders

TitleElectromagnetic Waves in Complex Systems : Selected Theoretical and Applied Problems
Author(s)Sirenko, Yuriy;Velychko, Lyudmyla
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXIII, 446 p. 114 illus., 48 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book gives guidance to solve problems in electromagnetics, providing both examples of solving serious research problems as well as the original results to encourage further investigations. The book contains seven chapters on various aspects of resonant wave scattering, each solving one original problem. All of them are unified by the authors??? desire to show advantages of rigorous approaches at all stages, from the formulation of a problem and the selection of a method to the interpretation of results. The book reveals a range of problems associated with wave propagation and scattering in natural and artificial environments or with the design of antennas elements. The authors invoke both theoretical (analytical and numerical) and experimental techniques for handling the problems. Attention is given to mathematical simulations, computational efficiency, and physical interpretation of the experimental results. The book is written for students, graduate students and young researchers.

TitleFrom Newton to Mandelbrot : A Primer in Theoretical Physics
Author(s)Stauffer, Dietrich;Stanley, H. Eugene;Lesne, Annick
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2017.
DescriptionXIV, 270 p. 84 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook takes the reader on a tour of the most important landmarks of theoretical physics: classical, quantum, and statistical mechanics, relativity, electrodynamics, as well as the most modern and exciting of all: elementary particles and the physics of fractals. The second edition has been supplemented with a new chapter devoted to concise though complete presentation of dynamical systems, bifurcations and chaos theory. The treatment is confined to the essentials of each area, presenting all the central concepts and equations at an accessible level. Chapters 1 to 4 contain the standard material of courses in theoretical physics and are supposed to accompany lectures at the university; thus they are rather condensed. They are supposed to fill one year of teaching. Chapters 5 and 6, in contrast, are written less condensed since this material may not be part of standard lectures and thus could be studied without the help of a university teacher. An appendix on elementary particles lies somewhere in between: It could be a summary of a much more detailed course, or studied without such a course. Illustrations and numerous problems round off this unusual textbook. It will ideally accompany the students all along their course in theoretical physics and prove indispensable in preparing and revising the exams. It is also suited as a reference for teachers or scientists from other disciplines who are interested in the topic
