TitleBoris Hessen: Physics and Philosophy in the Soviet Union, 1927???1931 : Neglected Debates on Emergence and Reduction
Author(s)Talbot, Chris;Pattison, Olga
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionIX, 169 p. 7 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents key works of Boris Hessen, outstanding Soviet philosopher of science, available here in English for the first time. Quality translations are accompanied by an editors' introduction and annotations. Boris Hessen is known in history of science circles for his ???Social and Economic Roots of Newton???s Principia??? presented in London (1931), which inspired new approaches in the West. As a philosopher and a physicist, he was tasked with developing a Marxist approach to science in the 1920s. He studied the history of physics to clarify issues such as reductionism and causality as they applied to new developments. With the philosophers called the ???Dialecticians???, his debates with the opposing ???Mechanists??? on the issue of emergence are still worth studying and largely ignored in the many recent works on this subject. Taken as a whole, the book is a goldmine of insights into both the foundations of physics and Soviet history

TitleMaster of Galactic Astronomy: A Biography of Jan Hendrik Oort
Author(s)van der Kruit, Pieter C
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXIX, 356 p. 195 illus., 60 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis accessible and entertaining biography chronicles the life and triumphs of astronomer Jan Hendrik Oort, who helped lay the foundations of modern astronomy in the 20th century. The book puts into context some of Oort's most significant achievements, including his discovery that the Milky Way rotates, as well as his famous hypothesis that our Solar System is surrounded by a reservoir of comets ??? now simply known as the Oort Cloud. Written by Oort???s former student, this fascinating story also delves into Oort???s pivotal role in the foundation of major astronomical facilities, including radio telescopes in the Netherlands and the European Southern Observatory (ESO), which now operates the most successful astronomical observatories in the world. The book draws extensively on new archival research through the Oort Archives, along with personal reminiscences by Oort???s son and astronomer-grandson, to paint a more detailed picture of Oort???s life not just as an astronomer, but also as a husband, father, and citizen. The strong public interest in comets triggered by the Rosetta mission to comet 67P/Churyumov???Gerasimenko and the recently discovered interstellar comet in the Solar System make this book particularly timely

TitleDon't Be Afraid of Physics : Quantum Mechanics, Relativity and Cosmology for Everyone
Author(s)Barrett, Ross;Delsanto, Pier Paolo
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVIII, 293 p. 79 illus., 48 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteWith the aid of entertaining short stories, anecdotes, lucid explanations and straight-forward figures, this book challenges the perception that the world of physics is inaccessible to the non-expert. Beginning with Neanderthal man, it traces the evolution of human reason and understanding from paradoxes and optical illusions to gravitational waves, black holes and dark energy. On the way, it provides insights into the mind-boggling advances at the frontiers of physics and cosmology. Unsolved problems and contradictions are highlighted, and contentious issues in modern physics are discussed in a non-dogmatic way in a language comprehensible to the non-scientist. It has something for everyone

TitleKarl Popper's Science and Philosophy
Author(s)Parusnikov??, Zuzana;Merritt, David
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionX, 367 p. 18 illus., 10 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteOf all philosophers of the 20th century, few built more bridges between academic disciplines than Karl Popper. He contributed to a wide variety of fields in addition to the epistemology and the theory of scientific method for which he is best known. This book illustrates and evaluates the impact, both substantive and methodological, that Popper has had in the natural and mathematical sciences. The topics selected include quantum mechanics, evolutionary biology, cosmology, mathematical logic, statistics, and cognitive science. The approach is multidisciplinary, opening a dialogue across scientific disciplines and between scientists and philosophers

TitleThe History of Modern Astronomy in Japan
Author(s)Kogure, Tomokazu
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVI, 295 p. 175 illus., 34 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book considers the history of modern astronomy and astrophysics in Japan by comparing with the development of astrophysics in western countries. Astrophysics essentially arose in three separate fields: astronomical spectroscopy, stellar structure, and survey of celestial objects. This book introduces readers to the state of astronomy back to the Tokugawa era (18th ??? 19th centuries), when the chief task of astronomers was limited to the calendar making. With the so-called Meiji revolution (1868), the situation drastically changed. The Meiji Government promoted the modernization of Japan by hiring numbers of foreign instructors in political, social, and cultural affairs, including Construction of Observatory and University. Then the foreign studies of Japanese researchers lasted for many years. After the Second World War, Japan experienced great social and economical growth allowing the constructions of large optical, radio, and space instruments. With this background astrophysics progressed and eventually flourished. The book ends by highlighting Japanese contributions to international collaboration up to the early 21st century. Readers of this book will understand how astrophysics has grown into one of the major sciences in Japan, and how the works of individual astronomers are contributing to the global advancement of knowledge of the universe

TitleEssential Quotes for Scientists and Engineers
Author(s)Likharev, Konstantin K
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionX, 239 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book brings together about 2,500 quotations on various topics of interest to scientists and engineers, including students of STEM disciplines. Careful curation of the material by the editor provides the reader with far greater value than can be obtained by searching the internet. The quotes have been selected for various attributes including: importance of topic, depth of insight, and - not least - wit, with many of them satisfying all these criteria. To make sequential reading of the quotes more engaging, they are grouped into broad topical sections, and the entries within each section are organized thematically, forming a quasi-continuous narrative thread. The text and authorship of each quote have been carefully verified, and the most popular cases of misquotation and misattribution are noted. The book represents a valuable resource for those writing science and engineering articles as well as being a joy to read in its own right
