TitleHubble, Humason and the Big Bang : The Race to Uncover the Expanding Universe
Author(s)Voller, Ron
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVII, 445 p. 59 illus., 9 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe story of Hubble and Humason is one for the ages???and in particular, the Cosmic Age. In this compelling book, science writer Ron Voller digs deep into how and why the two scientists continued to investigate their theory of universal expansion in the face of persistent doubt, contrary theories, and calamitous world events. The evolution of this dynamic duo???s tenuous friendship and professional partnership is in many ways as intriguing as their groundbreaking work on the evolution of the universe. The book therefore traces their lives from their childhoods into their burgeoning careers, revealing how a World War and their own personal differences stood in the way of initial cooperation. It then shows how despite all this, the two opposites eventually came together in the pursuit of something far greater than themselves. This grand story is inextricably interwoven with that of Albert Einstein, Willem de Sitter, and other great physicists of the era, all of whom took part in the staggering quest to make sense of the Big Bang and what followed. ???Edwin Hubble has often been considered as an island of sorts???a lone wolf of astronomy. But Voller???s book shows otherwise, as he examines Milt Humason???s essential contributions to our understanding of the expanding universe.??? - Daniel Lewis, Dibner Senior Curator, History of Science & Technology, The Huntington Library

TitleThe Development of the Action Principle : A Didactic History from Euler-Lagrange to Schwinger
Author(s)Dittrich, Walter
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXV, 135 p. 23 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book describes the historical development of the principle of stationary action from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Reference is made to the most important contributors to this topic, in particular Bernoullis, Leibniz, Euler, Lagrange and Laplace. The leading theme is how the action principle is applied to problems in classical physics such as hydrodynamics, electrodynamics and gravity, extending also to the modern formulation of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, especially quantum electrodynamics. A critical analysis of operator versus c-number field theory is given. The book contains many worked examples. In particular, the term "vacuum" is scrutinized. The book is aimed primarily at actively working researchers, graduate students and historians interested in the philosophical interpretation and evolution of physics; in particular, in understanding the action principle and its application to a wide range of natural phenomena

TitleNeptune: From Grand Discovery to a World Revealed : Essays on the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of John Couch Adams
Author(s)Sheehan, William;Bell, Trudy E;Kennett, Carolyn;Smith, Robert
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXXXI, 403 p. 130 illus., 71 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe 1846 discovery of Neptune is one of the most remarkable stories in the history of science and astronomy. John Couch Adams and U.J. Le Verrier both investigated anomalies in the motion of Uranus and independently predicted the existence and location of this new planet. However, interpretations of the events surrounding this discovery have long been mired in controversy. Who first predicted the new planet? Was the discovery just a lucky fluke? The ensuing storm engaged astronomers across Europe and the United States. Written by an international group of authors, this pathbreaking volume explores in unprecedented depth the contentious history of Neptune???s discovery, drawing on newly discovered documents and re-examining the historical record. In so doing, we gain new understanding of the actions of key individuals and sharper insights into the pressures acting on them. The discovery of Neptune was a captivating mathematical moment and was widely regarded at the time as the greatest triumph of Newton???s theory of universal gravitation. The book therefore begins with Newton???s development of his ideas of gravity. It examines too the mathematical calculations related to the discovery of Neptune, using new theories and tools provided by advances in celestial mechanics over the past twenty years. Through this process, the book analyzes why the mathematical approach that proved so potent in the discovery of Neptune, grand as it was, could not help produce similar discoveries despite several valiant attempts. In the final chapters, we see how the discovery of Neptune marked the end of one quest???to explain the wayward motions of Uranus???and the beginning of another quest to fill in the map and understand the nature of the outer Solar System, whose icy precincts Neptune, as the outermost of the giant planets, bounds.

TitleUnderstanding Gravitational Waves
Author(s)Kitchin, C. R
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXIV, 413 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe birth of a completely new branch of observational astronomy is a rare and exciting occurrence. For a long time, our theories about gravitational waves???proposed by Albert Einstein and others more than a hundred years ago???could never be fully proven, since we lacked the proper technology to do it. That all changed when, on September 14, 2015, instruments at the LIGO Observatory detected gravitational waves for the first time. This book explores the nature of gravitational waves???what they are, where they come from, why they are so significant and why nobody could prove they existed before now. Written in plain language and interspersed with additional explanatory tutorials, it will appeal to lay readers, science enthusiasts, physical science students, amateur astronomers and to professional scientists and astronomers

TitleThe Quantum Theory???Origins and Ideas : A Historical Primer for Physics Students
Author(s)Helrich, Carl S
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionX, 241 p. 52 illus., 20 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book offers a fresh perspective on some of the central experimental and theoretical works that laid the foundations for today's quantum mechanics: It traces the theoretical and mathematical development of the hypotheses that put forward to explain puzzling experimental results; it also examines their interconnections and how they together evolved into modern quantum theory. Particular attention is paid to J.J. Thomson's atomic modeling and experiments at the Cavendish Laboratory, Max Planck's struggle to explain the experimental results of Heinrich Rubens and Ferdinand Kurlbaum, as well as the path leading from Louis de Broglie???s ideas to the wave theory of Erwin Schr??dinger. Combining his experience in teaching quantum mechanics with his interest in the historical roots of the subject, the author has created a valuable resource for understanding quantum physics through its history, and a book that is appreciated both by working physicists and historians

PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXIX, 356 p. 195 illus., 60 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis accessible and entertaining biography chronicles the life and triumphs of astronomer Jan Hendrik Oort, who helped lay the foundations of modern astronomy in the 20th century. The book puts into context some of Oort's most significant achievements, including his discovery that the Milky Way rotates, as well as his famous hypothesis that our Solar System is surrounded by a reservoir of comets ??? now simply known as the Oort Cloud. Written by Oort???s former student, this fascinating story also delves into Oort???s pivotal role in the foundation of major astronomical facilities, including radio telescopes in the Netherlands and the European Southern Observatory (ESO), which now operates the most successful astronomical observatories in the world. The book draws extensively on new archival research through the Oort Archives, along with personal reminiscences by Oort???s son and astronomer-grandson, to paint a more detailed picture of Oort???s life not just as an astronomer, but also as a husband, father, and citizen. The strong public interest in comets triggered by the Rosetta mission to comet 67P/Churyumov???Gerasimenko and the recently discovered interstellar comet in the Solar System make this book particularly timely
