TitleThe History of Modern Astronomy in Japan
Author(s)Kogure, Tomokazu
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVI, 295 p. 175 illus., 34 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book considers the history of modern astronomy and astrophysics in Japan by comparing with the development of astrophysics in western countries. Astrophysics essentially arose in three separate fields: astronomical spectroscopy, stellar structure, and survey of celestial objects. This book introduces readers to the state of astronomy back to the Tokugawa era (18th ??? 19th centuries), when the chief task of astronomers was limited to the calendar making. With the so-called Meiji revolution (1868), the situation drastically changed. The Meiji Government promoted the modernization of Japan by hiring numbers of foreign instructors in political, social, and cultural affairs, including Construction of Observatory and University. Then the foreign studies of Japanese researchers lasted for many years. After the Second World War, Japan experienced great social and economical growth allowing the constructions of large optical, radio, and space instruments. With this background astrophysics progressed and eventually flourished. The book ends by highlighting Japanese contributions to international collaboration up to the early 21st century. Readers of this book will understand how astrophysics has grown into one of the major sciences in Japan, and how the works of individual astronomers are contributing to the global advancement of knowledge of the universe

TitleEssential Quotes for Scientists and Engineers
Author(s)Likharev, Konstantin K
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionX, 239 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book brings together about 2,500 quotations on various topics of interest to scientists and engineers, including students of STEM disciplines. Careful curation of the material by the editor provides the reader with far greater value than can be obtained by searching the internet. The quotes have been selected for various attributes including: importance of topic, depth of insight, and - not least - wit, with many of them satisfying all these criteria. To make sequential reading of the quotes more engaging, they are grouped into broad topical sections, and the entries within each section are organized thematically, forming a quasi-continuous narrative thread. The text and authorship of each quote have been carefully verified, and the most popular cases of misquotation and misattribution are noted. The book represents a valuable resource for those writing science and engineering articles as well as being a joy to read in its own right

TitleDo Wave Functions Jump? : Perspectives of the Work of GianCarlo Ghirardi
Author(s)Allori, Valia;Bassi, Angelo;Drr, Detlef;Zanghi, Nino
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXV, 436 p. 122 illus., 40 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a tribute to the scientific legacy of GianCarlo Ghirardi, who was one of the most influential scientists in the field of modern foundations of quantum theory. In this appraisal, contributions from friends, collaborators and colleagues reflect the influence of his world of thoughts on theory, experiments and philosophy, while also offering prospects for future research in the foundations of quantum physics. The themes of the contributions revolve around the physical reality of the wave function and its notorious collapse, randomness, relativity and experiments
