TitleSolvable Cellular Automata : Methods and Applications
Author(s)Fuk??, Henryk
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2023.
DescriptionXIX, 296 p. 41 illus., 28 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe main focus of the book is solvability of cellular automata, that is, expressing the state of a given cell after a given number of steps by an explicit formula. The author considers solutions of two types of initial value problems for cellular automata, the deterministic one and the probabilistic one. In the first chapter the basic concepts of cellular automata theory are introduced. Deterministic initial value problem is introduced next and solutions for selected simple rules are also presented. In the following chapters various techniques for solving the deterministic problem are introduced, using elementary CA rules of increasing complexity as examples. The second part of the book introduces the concept of probability measure in the context of cellular automata and the probabilistic initial value problem for both deterministic and probabilistic rules. The book is amply illustrated with examples and applications such as the density classification problem, phase transitions in traffic models or the diffusion of innovations model. In the appendix, solution formulae (both deterministic and probabilistic) for over 60 elementary cellular automata rules are listed. Ruelle-Frobenius-Perron equations for all 88 minimal elementary cellular automata are also provided.

TitleOscillators and Oscillatory Signals from Smooth to Discontinuous : Geometrical, Algebraic, and Physical Nature
Author(s)Pilipchuk, Valery N
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2023.
DescriptionXII, 456 p. 169 illus., 89 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis updated and enriched new edition maintains its complementarity principle in which the subgroup of rotations, harmonic oscillators, and the conventional complex analysis generate linear and weakly nonlinear approaches, whereas translations and reflections, impact oscillators, and hyperbolic Clifford???s algebras, give rise to the essentially nonlinear ???quasi-impact??? methodology based on the idea of non-smooth temporal substitutions. In the years since ???Nonlinear Dynamics: Between Linear and Impact Limits,??? the previous edition of this book, was published, due to a widening area of applications, a deeper insight into the matter has emerged leading to the rudimentary algebraic view on the very existence of the complementary smooth and non-smooth base systems as those associated with two different signs of the algebraic equation j2 =?? 1. This edition further includes an overview of applications found in the literature after the publication of first edition, and new physical examples illustrating both theoretical statements and constructive analytical tools. Presents an improved picture of non-smooth temporal transformations using impact systems as a basis for various analyses; Includes new examples of recent applications for problems in energy absorption/harvesting and resonance interactions; Describes a complementarity principle with a range of applications from smooth to discontinuous oscillatory processes

TitleTwo-Dimensional Quadratic Nonlinear Systems : Volume I: Univariate Vector Fields
Author(s)Luo, Albert C. J
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2023.
DescriptionXIII, 685 p. 121 illus., 84 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book focuses on the nonlinear dynamics based on the vector fields with univariate quadratic functions. This book is a unique monograph for two-dimensional quadratic nonlinear systems. It provides different points of view about nonlinear dynamics and bifurcations of the quadratic dynamical systems. Such a two-dimensional dynamical system is one of simplest dynamical systems in nonlinear dynamics, but the local and global structures of equilibriums and flows in such two-dimensional quadratic systems help us understand other nonlinear dynamical systems, which is also a crucial step toward solving the Hilbert???s sixteenth problem. Possible singular dynamics of the two-dimensional quadratic systems are discussed in detail. The dynamics of equilibriums and one-dimensional flows in two-dimensional systems are presented. Saddle-sink and saddle-source bifurcations are discussed, and saddle-center bifurcations are presented. The infinite-equilibrium states are switching bifurcations for nonlinear systems. From the first integral manifolds, the saddle-center networks are developed, and the networks of saddles, source, and sink are also presented. This book serves as a reference book on dynamical systems and control for researchers, students, and engineering in mathematics, mechanical, and electrical engineering

TitleIntroduction to Nonextensive Statistical Mechanics : Approaching a Complex World
Author(s)Tsallis, Constantino
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXVII, 569 p. 372 illus., 208 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteMetaphors, generalizations and unifications are natural and desirable ingredients of the evolution of scientific theories and concepts. Physics in particular has walked along these paths since its very beginning. This book focuses on nonextensive statistical mechanics, a current generalization of Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) statistical mechanics. Conceived nearly 150 years ago by Maxwell, Boltzmann and Gibbs, the BG theory, one of the greatest monuments of contemporary physics, exhibits many impressive successes in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computational sciences. Presently, several thousands of publications by scientists around the world have been dedicated to its nonextensive generalization. A variety of applications have emerged in complex systems and its mathematical grounding is by now well advanced. Since the first edition release thirteen years ago, there has been a vast amount of new results in the field, all of which have been incorporated in thiscomprehensive second edition. Heavily revised and updated with new sections and figures, the second edition remains the go-to text on the subject. A pedagogical introduction to the BG theory concepts and their generalizations ??? nonlinear dynamics, extensivity of the nonadditive entropy, global correlations, generalization of the standard CLT???s, complex networks, among others ??? is presented in this book, as well as a selection of paradigmatic applications in various sciences together with diversified experimental verifications of some of its predictions. Introduction to Nonextensive Statistical Mechanics is suitable for students and researchers with an interest in complex systems and statistical physics

PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIV, 355 p. 91 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book addresses the COVID-19 pandemic from a quantitative perspective based on mathematical models and methods largely used in nonlinear physics. It aims to study COVID-19 epidemics in countries and SARS-CoV-2 infections in individuals from the nonlinear physics perspective and to model explicitly COVID-19 data observed in countries and virus load data observed in COVID-19 patients. The first part of this book provides a short technical introduction into amplitude spaces given by eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and amplitudes. In the second part of the book, mathematical models of epidemiology are introduced such as the SIR and SEIR models and applied to describe COVID-19 epidemics in various countries around the world. In the third part of the book, virus dynamics models are considered and applied to infections in COVID-19 patients. This book is written for researchers, modellers, and graduate students in physics and medicine, epidemiology and virology, biology, applied mathematics, and computer sciences. This book identifies the relevant mechanisms behind past COVID-19 outbreaks and in doing so can help efforts to stop future COVID-19 outbreaks and other epidemic outbreaks. Likewise, this book points out the physics underlying SARS-CoV-2 infections in patients and in doing so supports a physics perspective to address human immune reactions to SARS-CoV-2 infections and similar virus infections

TitleEfficiency in Complex Systems : Self-Organization Towards Increased Efficiency
Author(s)Georgiev, Georgi Yordanov;Shokrollahi-Far, Mahmoud
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXI, 157 p. 12 illus., 5 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book uses new ideas and language for understanding how self-organization and complexity trend toward increased efficiency. Different measures for efficiency from multiple disciplines are used to probe the ones that provide the most insight. One major goal is to seek a common framework to trace the increase of efficiency as a measure of the level of organization and evolutionary stage of a complex system. The chapters come from a satellite meeting hosted at the Conference on Complex Systems, in Cancun, 2017. The contributions will be peer-reviewed and contributors from outside the conference will be invited to submit chapters to ensure full coverage of the topics. This text will appeal to students and researchers working on complex systems and efficiency
