Title | From Geocentric to Heliocentric: How Discoveries Are Made |
Author(s) | Ge, Yunbao |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Nature Singapore, 2021. |
Description | XIV, 174 p. 87 illus., 69 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Has anyone ever seen with their own eyes that the Earth goes around the sun? Even to this day, no one has. However, 500 and even 2000 years ago, some astronomers managed to point out that this is the case. At that time, people???s range of activities was strictly confined, the technology and tools used were extremely primitive, and many of the mathematical methods used today had not been developed. How did those astronomers make and verify this discovery? This book explains this exciting demonstration process. It enables anyone with a basic junior-high-school knowledge of geometry and a certain degree of spatial imagination to understand this and other interesting discoveries in the solar system. By demonstrating this interesting process, the book not satisfies readers curiosity using the simplest mathematics, but also inspires them to explore the new and unknown world |

Title | Fluctuation Theorems under Divergent Entropy Production and their Applications for Fundamental Problems in Statistical Physics |
Author(s) | Murashita, Y??to |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Nature Singapore, 2021. |
Description | XIII, 133 p. 21 illus., 17 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents the derivation of the fluctuation theorems with divergent entropy production and their application to fundamental problems in statistical physics. It explores the two basic aspects of the fluctuation theorems: i) Applicability in extreme situations with divergent entropy production, concluding that the fluctuation theorems remain valid under the notion of absolute irreversibility, and ii) utility in the investigation of classical enigmas in the framework of statistical physics, i.e., Gibbs and Loschmidt paradoxes. The book offers readers an overview of the research in fundamental statistical physics. Firstly it briefly but skillfully reviews the modern development of fluctuation theorems to found the key theme of the book. Secondly it concisely discusses historical issues of statistical physics in chronological order, along with the key literature in the field. They help readers easily follow the key developments in the fundamental research of statistical physics |

Title | Demographics of the Cold Universe with ALMA : From Interstellar and Circumgalactic Media to Cosmic Structures |
Author(s) | Fujimoto, Seiji |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Nature Singapore, 2021. |
Description | XIII, 153 p. 63 illus., 62 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents the cold side of the Universe illustrated by the rest-frame, far-infrared emission with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The author constructed the largest-ever ALMA sample and dataset, which enables them to identify very faint, rest-frame, far-infrared dust continuums as well as the carbon fine-structure line emission from distant galaxies that have been missed in previous surveys. The observational findings described in this book reveal for the first time where and how much of the star formation, traced by the rest-frame far-infrared emission, is ongoing, from inter-stellar and circum-galactic media to cosmic structures. Moreover, since some of the findings are unexpected and as such challenge the current galaxy formation models, the book provides exciting questions that should be addressed in the next decades |

Title | Environmental Issues of Blasting : Applications of Artificial Intelligence Techniques |
Author(s) | Bhatawdekar, Ramesh M;Armaghani, Danial Jahed;Azizi, Aydin |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Nature Singapore, 2021. |
Description | IX, 77 p. 9 illus., 8 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book gives a rigorous and up-to-date study of the various AI and machine learning algorithms for resolving environmental challenges associated with blasting. Blasting is a critical activity in any mining or civil engineering project for breaking down hard rock masses. A small amount of explosive energy is only used during blasting to fracture rock in order to achieve the appropriate fragmentation, throw, and development of muck pile. The surplus energy is transformed into unfavourable environmental effects such as back-break, flyrock, air overpressure, and ground vibration. The advancement of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques has increased the accuracy of predicting these environmental impacts of blasting. This book discusses the effective application of these strategies in forecasting, mitigating, and regulating the aforementioned blasting environmental hazards |
