TitleStochastic Differential Equations for Chemical Transformations in White Noise Probability Space : Wick Products and Computations
Author(s)Kulasiri, Don
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2024.
DescriptionXVI, 155 p. 43 illus., 41 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book highlights the applications of stochastic differential equations in white noise probability space to chemical reactions that occur in biology. These reactions operate in fluctuating environments and are often coupled with each other. The theory of stochastic differential equations based on white noise analysis provides a physically meaningful modelling framework. The Wick product-based calculus for stochastic variables is similar to regular calculus; therefore, there is no need for Ito calculus. Numerical examples are provided with novel ways to solve the equations. While the theory of white noise analysis is well developed by mathematicians over the past decades, applications in biophysics do not exist. This book provides a bridge between this kind of mathematics and biophysics

DescriptionXXV, 323 p. 95 illus., 9 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is a systematic introduction to astrometry and celestial mechanics. It consists of five parts: Observational astrometry, theoretical astrometry, basics of celestial mechanics, orbital dynamics, and rotational dynamics. The book is unique in various aspects. First, it discusses astrometry and celestial mechanics in a single and unified manner. Second, it stands on not the Newtonian but general relativistic viewpoints. Third, it explains both the orbital and rotational motions of celestial bodies. Fourth, it conforms to the latest International Astronomical Union (IAU) resolutions and Conf??rence G??n??rale des Poids et Mesures (CGPM) rules. Lastly, its historical topics, ample exercises, and detailed model answers stimulate readers. The appendixes also provide various tables of constants, basic mathematical formulae, descriptions of symbols used, lists of technical abbreviations and model solutions to exercises. The book is intended for undergraduate students of physics or astronomy. Further, it serves as a pocket reference also useful for professional scientists. The basis of the English translation of this book from its Japanese original manuscript was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision of the content was done by the editor and authors

TitleTotal Hip Replacement (THR) : Effect of Inclination and Anteversion Angle on the Performance of Epoxy-UHMWPE Acetabular Cup
Author(s)Manap, Muhammad Faris bin Abd;Shuib, Solehuddin;Romli, Ahmad Zafir
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2024.
DescriptionXVII, 94 p. 52 illus., 39 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book highlights the critical challenges faced in total hip replacement (THR) procedures, particularly concerning the performance and longevity of acetabular components. Despite advancements in implant technology, issues such as improper orientation and material failure continue to result in complications, including dislocation and wear. Recognizing the need for more reliable solutions, this book explores the optimization of safe zone orientation and the development of composite materials, specifically focusing on metal-on-polymer (MoP) implants. By investigating these factors through numerical analysis, finite element analysis (FEA), and experimental studies, the book seeks to enhance implant performance, reduce failure rates, and ultimately improve patient outcomes in THR surgeries

TitleViscoelastic Subdiffusive Flows : Theory and Computation
Author(s)Wilson, Helen;Sircar, Sarthok;Shukla, Priyanka
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2024.
DescriptionXVIII, 171 p. 32 illus., 14 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book discusses the dynamical and rheological properties of high molecular weight entangled polymer melts, commonly known as viscoelastic subdiffusive fluids. Unlike dilute liquids, these materials exhibit molecular transport within a sublinear regime, meaning the timescale of diffusive transport is sublinear. The text emphasizes the potential of fractional calculus in modeling these fluids and introduces a novel fractional model to investigate regions of spatiotemporal instability in channel flows. At the microscale, the entanglement of polymer chains leads to localized, non-homogeneous regions with increased viscosity, which manifest as spatiotemporal macrostructures at the macroscale. To capture these macrostructures within the flow, direct numerical simulations are employed using a newly developed, physically realizable structure tensor, contributing to a deeper understanding of this complex class of fluids

TitleGalaxy Merger Identification Methods, and Investigations of the Role of Mergers in Galaxy Evolution
Author(s)Omori, Kiyoaki Christopher
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2024.
DescriptionXVI, 144 p. 75 illus., 71 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book offers new findings on the impact of galaxy mergers on galaxy evolution and related processes. Galaxies are astronomical objects composed of stars, gas, and dark matter. The main pathway for galaxy evolution in the currently accepted model for structure growth is through interactions and mergers, or the process in which multiple galaxies interact, collide, and end up as one larger galaxy. Galaxy interactions and mergers are also considered to drive various processes pertaining to galaxy evolution, such as star formation, active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity, and chemical evolution. As such, not only are merging galaxy systems important to understand galaxy structure growth in a cosmological context, they are also unique laboratories to study evolutionary processes taking place in galaxies. However, despite their importance, the relative role of galaxy mergers on galaxy evolution is still heavily contested. One reason for this is difficulty in identifying merger galaxies in observational data. Many different methods have been adopted for merger galaxy identification, but none of them are perfect. Moreover, the use of differing selection methods can result in widely different samples, which can alter statistical results. As such, a novel, robust method for merger identification is required to deepen our understanding of galaxy mergers. In this book, we introduce new methods to identify galaxy mergers from observational data. The first method combines the use of visual identification???both of optical and kinematic images???with spectroscopic pair identification. The second is machine learning based, using a training method called fine-tuning, an application of transfer learning. A pre-trained model on galaxy images is further fine-tuned using a sample of synthetic galaxy images, to make a classifier for merger identification. Using samples identified by our methods, the author conducts three studies: the impact of mergers on galaxy chemical evolution, the effect of galaxy local environment on merging activity, and the connection between mergers and AGN activity. This book is mainly intended for astrophysicists, particularly those studying galaxies, however is open for all to read
