TitleThe Beauty and the Boost: A Higgs Boson Tale : Measurements of Higgs Boson Production at High Energy in Decays to Bottom Quarks and Their Interpretations with the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC
Author(s)Moser, Brian
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2023.
DescriptionXXII, 234 p. 127 illus., 114 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NotePrecision measurements of the Higgs boson???s properties are a powerful tool to look for deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. The 139/fb of proton-proton collision data which have been collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the LHC, offer an opportunity to investigate rare Higgs-boson topologies, which are particularly sensitive to new physics scenarios but experimentally difficult to access. Several such measurements, which target Higgs-boson decays to heavy-flavour quarks, as well as their combinations are presented in this thesis. A novel analysis that measures Higgs-boson production in association with a heavy vector boson V (VH, with V=W,Z) at high energies is presented. Dedicated Higgs-boson reconstruction techniques are applied to reconstruct the highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs-boson decays into pairs of bottom quarks. The measurement is subsequently combined with a VH cross-section measurement at low and intermediate pT(V) to provide a differential cross-section measurement in kinematic fiducial volumes over the largest possible pT(V) range. All cross-section measurements agree with the SM predictions within relative uncertainties that range from 30% to 300%. The results are furthermore interpreted as limits on the parameters of a SM effective field theory. Finally, a combination of measurements of Higgs decays to heavy-flavour quarks is used to experimentally determine that the Higgs-boson coupling to charm quarks is weaker than to bottom quarks, as predicted by the SM. The target audience for the thesis are physicists and physics students, in particular those with a background in high energy physics

Author(s)Lista, Luca
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXXX, 334 p. 1 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis third edition expands on the original material. Large portions of the text have been reviewed and clarified. More emphasis is devoted to machine learning including more modern concepts and examples. This book provides the reader with the main concepts and tools needed to perform statistical analyses of experimental data, in particular in the field of high-energy physics (HEP). It starts with an introduction to probability theory and basic statistics, mainly intended as a refresher from readers??? advanced undergraduate studies, but also to help them clearly distinguish between the Frequentist and Bayesian approaches and interpretations in subsequent applications. Following, the author discusses Monte Carlo methods with emphasis on techniques like Markov Chain Monte Carlo, and the combination of measurements, introducing the best linear unbiased estimator. More advanced concepts and applications are gradually presented, including unfolding and regularization procedures, culminating in the chapter devoted to discoveries and upper limits. The reader learns through many applications in HEP where the hypothesis testing plays a major role and calculations of look-elsewhere effect are also presented. Many worked-out examples help newcomers to the field and graduate students alike understand the pitfalls involved in applying theoretical concepts to actual data

TitleArtificial Intelligence for Scientific Discoveries : Extracting Physical Concepts from Experimental Data Using Deep Learning
Author(s)Iten, Raban
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXIII, 170 p. 38 illus., 37 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteWill research soon be done by artificial intelligence, thereby making human researchers superfluous? This book explains modern approaches to discovering physical concepts with machine learning and elucidates their strengths and limitations. The automation of the creation of experimental setups and physical models, as well as model testing are discussed. The focus of the book is the automation of an important step of the model creation, namely finding a minimal number of natural parameters that contain sufficient information to make predictions about the considered system. The basic idea of this approach is to employ a deep learning architecture, SciNet, to model a simplified version of a physicist's reasoning process. SciNet finds the relevant physical parameters, like the mass of a particle, from experimental data and makes predictions based on the parameters found. The author demonstrates how to extract conceptual information from such parameters, e.g., Copernicus' conclusion that the solar system is heliocentric.

TitleA Search for Exotic Higgs Decays : Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Long-Lived Particles
Author(s)Burzynski, Jackson
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXV, 193 p. 135 illus., 118 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis work describes a search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to two long-lived, neutral, spin-0 particles which subsequently decay to pairs of b quarks, giving the striking signature of displaced hadronic jets in the ATLAS inner detector. Several other ATLAS searches have probed this decay topology previously, excluding branching ratios of the Higgs boson to long-lived particles (LLPs) of more than 10% for proper lifetimes greater than 100mm. These searches relied on dedicated triggers designed to select events with LLPs decaying in the ATLAS calorimeter or muon spectrometer. The lack of an equivalent trigger for LLP decays in the ATLAS inner detector has been a limiting factor in probing LLP lifetimes less than 100mm. To circumvent the difficulty of triggering on LLP decays, the search presented in this thesis exploits the ZH associated production mode, relying on leptonic trigger signatures to select interesting events. This is the first search for Higgs boson decays into LLPs to exploit this analysis methodology and additionally makes use of several novel methods for both background rejection and background estimation. No excess over Standard Model predictions is observed, and upper limits are set on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to LLPs . Depending on the mass of the LLP, branching ratios greater than 10% are excluded for lifetimes as small as 4mm and as large as 100mm, probing an important gap in the ATLAS exotic Higgs decay programme. In comparison to the previous searches for Higgs decays to LLPs, these are among the most stringent limits placed on this scenario, and for LLPs with masses below 40 GeV these results represent the strongest existing constraints on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to LLPs in this lifetime regime

Author(s)Gonzalo, Arnau Brossa
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2023.
DescriptionXIII, 236 p. 116 illus., 103 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents the latest results on the branching fraction and phase space distribution of B0 and Bs0 decays into final states including excited neutral charm mesons. This work represents four years of research, and the book describes in detail all the necessary steps and techniques required to perform a physics analysis of the data recorded by the LHCb experiment in the years 2016???2018. Although the results presented in this book represent the first measurement of such decays, the text is written in a manner accessible to Ph.D. students and early career researchers. Thus, all the contents included in this book are described in a pedagogical way, including technical details that would allow the results to be reproduced in future. In addition to the methodology used to perform these measurements, the book also includes a description of the theoretical background required to interpret the results presented, as well as a technical description of the LHCb detector, which provided the data sample used in this study

TitleSearch for the Higgs Boson Produced in Association with Top Quarks with the CMS Detector at the LHC
Author(s)Martin Perez, Cristina
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIII, 283 p. 170 illus., 158 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteIn this book, the interaction between the Higgs boson and the top quark is studied with the CMS detector at the LHC via the search for the associate production of the Higgs boson with one (tH) or two (ttH) top quarks. These processes are very rare and thus a high particle selection efficiency by the trigger system is essential. The selection of hadronically decaying tau leptons, expected from the Higgs boson decays, is tackled in the first part, where the trigger is optimized for Run 2 and Run 3 and a novel machine-learning based trigger for the High-Luminosity LHC is developed. The second part presents the analysis of tH and ttH where the Higgs boson decays into tau leptons, W or Z bosons with Run 2 data. The presence of multiple particles in the final state leads to the use of multivariant discriminants based on machine learning and the Matrix Element Method. The sophisticated methods used and the unprecedented amount of data result in the most precise cross section measurements to date

TitleExperimental Gravitation
Author(s)Ricci, Fulvio;Bassan, Massimo
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXXII, 430 p. 170 illus., 138 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book features a comprehensive review of experimental gravitation. It is a textbook based on the graduate courses on ???Experimental Gravitation??? given by the authors at their respective universities in Rome: Sapienza and Tor Vergata. A number of different research topics in the field are covered: from the torsion pendulum (still today the tool of choice for measuring small forces or torques) to the large interferometers developed to observe gravitational waves. Techniques that are still under development are also discussed, like the pulsar timing array and space-based detectors of the future. This book is written by experimentalists for experimentalists. While the background physics is summarized for less experienced readers, the emphasis is certainly on experimental verifications: the strategy, the apparatuses, the data analysis and the results of many cornerstone experiments are analyzed and discussed in depth. This textbook serves as a useful resource for both graduate students and professionals working in the increasingly vibrant field of experimental gravity

PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2022.
DescriptionXXIII, 488 p. 58 illus., 48 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book is the third edition of a successful textbook for upper-undergraduate and early graduate students, which offers a solid foundation in probability theory and statistics and their application to physical sciences, engineering, biomedical sciences and related disciplines. It provides broad coverage ranging from conventional textbook content of probability theory, random variables, and their statistics, regression, and parameter estimation, to modern methods including Monte-Carlo Markov chains, resampling methods and low-count statistics. In addition to minor corrections and adjusting structure of the content, particular features in this new edition include: Python codes and machine-readable data for all examples, classic experiments, and exercises, which are now more accessible to students and instructors New chapters on low-count statistics including the Poisson-based Cash statistic for regression in the low-count regime, and on contingency tables and diagnostic testing. An additional example of classic experiments based on testing data for SARS-COV-2 to demonstrate practical applications of the described statistical methods. This edition inherits the main pedagogical method of earlier versions???a theory-then-application approach???where emphasis is placed first on a sound understanding of the underlying theory of a topic, which becomes the basis for an efficient and practical application of the materials. Basic calculus is used in some of the derivations, and no previous background in probability and statistics is required. The book includes many numerical tables of data as well as exercises and examples to aid the readers' understanding of the topic
