Title | The Human Factor in the Settlement of the Moon : An Interdisciplinary Approach |
Author(s) | Rappaport, Margaret Boone;Szocik, Konrad |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XV, 317 p. 32 illus., 26 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | Approaching the settlement of our Moon from a practical perspective, this book is well suited for space program planners. It addresses a variety of human factor topics involved in colonizing Earth's Moon, including: history, philosophy, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, politics & policy, sociology, and anthropology. Each chapter identifies the complex, interdisciplinary issues of the human factor that arise in the early phases of settlement on the Moon. Besides practical issues, there is some emphasis placed on preserving, protecting, and experiencing the lunar environment across a broad range of occupations, from scientists to soldiers and engineers to construction workers. The book identifies utilitarian and visionary factors that shape human lives on the Moon. It offers recommendations for program planners in the government and commercial sectors and serves as a helpful resource for academic researchers. Together, the coauthors ask and attempt to answer: ???How will lunar society be different???? |

Title | Space Systems and Sustainability : From Asteroids and Solar Storms to Pandemics and Climate Change |
Author(s) | Pelton, Joseph N |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XII, 256 p. 49 illus., 44 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In his latest book, space scientist, futurist, and educator Joseph N. Pelton explores a dozen ways that Planet Earth is at ???existential??? risk, along with the many ways that space systems, data analytics, and advanced networking systems can help us cope with these global challenges. The chapters examine in a straightforward way how satellite systems and technol- ogy can drastically transform fields such as pandemic tracking and global medical responses, cosmic hazard monitoring, nuclear energy and waste disposal, water and land pollution, tele-education/telemedicine, and military conflict. Such examples show how orbiting smart systems will play an ever more vital role in our vulnerable modern world, allowing us to monitor, track, and respond to mounting problems of the 21st century. Dr. Pelton takes a broad view, probing the social, economic, and regulatory factors that are crucial to creating a more sustainable ???Spaceship Earth.??? This book is a call to action, promoting more organized international collaboration and investment in space technologies that can enable global change |

Title | Expanding Worldviews: Astrobiology, Big History and Cosmic Perspectives |
Author(s) | Crawford, Ian |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | VI, 377 p. 33 illus., 10 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book collates papers presented at two international conferences (held at the Australian National University in 2018 and Birkbeck College London in 2019) exploring the relationships between big history and astrobiology and their wider implications for society. These two relatively new academic disciplines aim to integrate human history with the wider history of the universe and the search for life elsewhere. The book will show that, despite differences in emphasis, big history and astrobiology share much in common, especially their interdisciplinary approaches and the cosmic and evolutionary perspectives that they both engender. Specifically, the book addresses the unified, all-embracing, nature of knowledge, the impact of big history on humanity and the world at large, the possible impact of SETI on astrobiology and big history, the cultural signature of Earth???s inhabitants beyond the atmosphere, and the political implications of a planetary worldview. The principal readership is envisaged to comprise scholars working in the fields of astrobiology, big history and space exploration interested in forging interdisciplinary links between these diverse topics, together with educators, and a wider public, interested in the societal implications of the cosmic and evolutionary perspectives engendered by research in these fields |

Title | The EXODUS Incident : A Scientific Novel |
Author(s) | Schattschneider, Peter |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XIII, 182 p. 19 illus., 16 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In the near future, Earth is suffering from climate change, famines, and fundamentalism. A global nuclear war is imminent. Interstellar probes from the Breakthrough Starshot project initiated by J. Milner and S. Hawking have discovered a habitable planet in the stellar system Proxima Centauri, just in time for the exodus of the elites. On board the EXODUS starship, the crew starts to experience strange things. The voyage to Atlantis, the new home for mankind, enters a mysterious and disquieting territory, where conspiracy theories about what is real and what is virtual emerge. THE EXODUS INCIDENT is a novel about an interstellar journey, which connects science to virtual realities and epistemology. In the guise of a final investigative report, a scientific treatise discusses the physics and mathematics behind the story: the starship, the fusion thruster, the target planet, and the journey, addressing anomalous effects which involve relativistic speed and deep space environments |

Title | General Relativity for Planetary Navigation |
Author(s) | Miller, James;Weeks, Connie J |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | VI, 104 p. 18 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This brief approaches General Relativity from a planetary navigation perspective, delving into the unconventional mathematical methods required to produce computer software for space missions. It provides a derivation of the Einstein field equations and describes experiments performed on the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous mission, spanning General Relativity Theory from the fundamental assumptions to experimental verification. The software used for planetary missions is derived from mathematics that use matrix notation. An alternative is to use Einstein summation notation, which enables the mathematics to be presented in a compact form but makes the geometry difficult to understand. In this book, the relationship of matrix notation to summation notation is shown. The purpose is to enable the reader to derive the mathematics used in the software in either matrix notation or summation notation. This brief is a useful tool for advanced students and young professionals embarking on careers in planetary navigation |
