TitleScience, Technology and Innovation Diplomacy in Developing Countries : Perceptions and Practice
Author(s)Ittekkot, Venugopalan;Baweja, Jasmeet Kaur
PublicationSingapore, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Singapore, 2023.
DescriptionXXIV, 356 p. 18 illus., 15 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book provides a developing country perspective on the internationalization of science and the role of science, technology and innovation diplomacy (STID) in leveraging scientific cooperation for sustainable development. Through more than 20 articles contributed by individuals from government departments and academic and research institutions in nine developing countries, it provides a conceptual understanding of the subject and reveals the prevailing perceptions on its practices. The book highlights the significance of international cooperation at bilateral, regional and multilateral levels as well as the challenges in developing North-South Cooperation and the need for strengthening STID in foreign policy and strategies of governments. The book is a useful reference for scientists, technologists, researchers, diplomats, government officials, policy makers and other stakeholders who are engaged directly or indirectly in STID and associated activities

TitleUnderstanding Real Traffic : Paradigm Shift in Transportation Science
Author(s)Kerner, Boris S
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXIX, 243 p. 84 illus., 71 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book addresses the reader interested in vehicular traffic phenomena, who have not learned about them before. It presents traffic phenomena like traffic breakdown and the emergence of moving traffic jams by showcasing empirical traffic data measured in real-world traffic. The author explains how these empirical traffic studies have led to the three-phase traffic theory and why this new theory is in conflict with standard traffic theories developed before. Moreover, he presents the reason for the failure of applications of standard traffic theories in real-world traffic and discusses why understanding real traffic has caused a paradigm shift in traffic and transportation science. The book examines why understanding real traffic breakdown is the basis for an explanation for the autonomous driving effects on traffic flow. It shows that understanding real traffic is possible from real-world traffic data without the need of mathematical traffic models. This makes the book intuitive for non-specialists, who can qualitatively understand all the basic features of traffic dynamics. In turn, experienced traffic researchers can grasp concepts and ideas made here easily accessible by the author, one of the leading pioneers in the field of vehicular traffic
