TitleThe World of Visual Time Signals for Mariners : Time Balls, Time Guns, Time Lights and Other Signals
Author(s)Kinns, Roger
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024.
DescriptionX, 471 p. 252 illus., 186 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book describes the worldwide evolution of land-based visual time signals that were used by mariners in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for accurate navigation at sea. They followed development of chronometers which were carried in ships to show mean time at Greenwich, the chosen prime meridian. Greenwich time could be compared with local astronomical time to determine longitude, but chronometers were mechanical devices that had to be checked for accuracy. Land-based signals that were regulated by astronomical observations evolved from the ideas in 1818 of Robert Wauchope, a British naval officer who served at the Cape of Good Hope. He inspired introduction of time balls, specifically the time ball at Greenwich in 1833 which set the standard for subsequent installations and is still in operation today. The main emphasis is on the external appearance of time signals at different locations around the world and how they were used by mariners for rating chronometers. Time ballsand guns also became popular signals for public use and workplace control but then had social and political implications

TitlePlanets of the Known Galaxy : Fact and Fiction About the Nearest Stars and Their Worlds
Author(s)Walsh, Kevin J. E
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024.
DescriptionXIII, 220 p. 27 illus., 24 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book explores "the known galaxy," the region of the Milky Way nearest to Earth, often referred to in science fiction as the part of our galaxy that humanity might have explored first in the future. It describes planets ranging from gloomy ocean worlds and gem-strewn landscapes to wandering planets and hot or cold Jupiters. The aim is to create a sense of place for these distant worlds, merging scientific knowledge with speculative fiction and myths. Written for fans of both science fact and fiction, the book divides the known galaxy into distinct regions, offering scientific descriptions and linking planets to their literary and mythological contexts. This blend of solid science and imaginative storytelling will appeal to readers who want to envision these planets as dynamic places with rich histories

TitleParallel Lives of Astronomers : Percival Lowell and Edward Emerson Barnard
Author(s)Sheehan, William
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024.
DescriptionXIV, 687 p. 273 illus., 47 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteUsing the "Parallel Lives" approach adopted by the Greek biographer Plutarch, noted historian of astronomy William Sheehan contrasts the lives and research careers of two famous astronomers, Percival Lowell and Edward Emerson Barnard. Drawing on vast archival materials and hitherto unpublished source materials, Sheehan documents in detail the contributions of these two late 19th and early 20th astronomers. Living at a time when controversies about Mars peaked, when great observatories were being built, and when research increasingly turned away from the Solar System toward the stellar and extra-galactic universe, these observers made spectacular contributions to astronomy. Their work still inspires, and continues in Perseverance rover's explorations of the surface of Mars carrying forward Lowell's dream of showing that Mars may once have been "the abode of life," and in Barnard's pioneering wide-angle photographs of the Milky Way which first showed the sweep, majesty and complexity of the Galaxy. The work of decades of research and writing, Sheehan has produced what is likely to become the definitive work on these two great astronomers. William Sheehan's many books include the authoritative biography The Immortal Fire Within: The Life and Work of Edward Emerson Barnard and (with Jim Bell) Discovering Mars: A History of Observation and Exploration of the Red Planet, which has been called the "gold standard of books on Mars" (Michio Kaku).

TitleCommercial Astronauts : The Next Generation of Spacefarers
Author(s)Seedhouse, Erik
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024.
DescriptionXIV, 235 p. 97 illus., 95 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThe beginning of the 2020???s witnessed dozens of commercial astronauts fly to space on a variety of vehicles. These spacecraft included SpaceX???s Crew Dragon, which supported the Inspiration4 and Axiom Space missions, Virgin Galactic???s SpaceShipTwo, which supported several suborbital science flights, and Blue Origin???s New Shepard spacecraft, which not only flew celebrities but also its fair share of commercial astronauts. The story of this new breed of spacefarer has only just begun. As evidenced by these missions, commercial spaceflight has grown beyond passengers simply traveling to space just for the ride. With orbital flights involving commercial astronauts staying in space for several days and weeks, companies such as Sierra Space, Axiom Space and Blue Origin are preparing for the next steps in commercial space travel which include the construction of orbiting habitats. But how will the opportunities for commercial astronauts develop, how will they be trained, and will this new group of astronauts evolve? This book describes how the commercial spaceflight industry is evolving, how it will continue to evolve as barriers to entry are reduced, competition grows, and costs are lowered, and how, because of these efforts, opportunities for commercial astronauts will increase

PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXII, 256 p. 49 illus., 44 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteIn his latest book, space scientist, futurist, and educator Joseph N. Pelton explores a dozen ways that Planet Earth is at ???existential??? risk, along with the many ways that space systems, data analytics, and advanced networking systems can help us cope with these global challenges. The chapters examine in a straightforward way how satellite systems and technol- ogy can drastically transform fields such as pandemic tracking and global medical responses, cosmic hazard monitoring, nuclear energy and waste disposal, water and land pollution, tele-education/telemedicine, and military conflict. Such examples show how orbiting smart systems will play an ever more vital role in our vulnerable modern world, allowing us to monitor, track, and respond to mounting problems of the 21st century. Dr. Pelton takes a broad view, probing the social, economic, and regulatory factors that are crucial to creating a more sustainable ???Spaceship Earth.??? This book is a call to action, promoting more organized international collaboration and investment in space technologies that can enable global change
