TitleBuilding Common Interests in the Arctic Ocean with Global Inclusion : Volume 2
Author(s)Berkman, Paul Arthur;Vylegzhanin, Alexander N;Young, Oran R;Balton, David A;??vretveit, Ole Rasmus
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXL, 451 p. 72 illus., 67 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book contains an inclusive compilation of perspectives about the Arctic Ocean with contributions that extend from Indigenous residents and early career scientists to Foreign Ministers, involving perspectives across the spectrum of subnational-national-international jurisdictions. The Arctic Ocean is being transformed with global climate warming into a seasonally ice-free sea, creating challenges as well as opportunities that operate short-to-long term, underscoring the necessity to make informed decisions across a continuum of urgencies from security to sustainability time scales. The Arctic Ocean offers a case study with lessons that are especially profound at this moment when humankind is exposed to a pandemic, awakening a common interest in survival across our globally-interconnected civilization unlike any period since the Second World War. This second volume in the Informed Decisionmaking for Sustainability series reveals that building global inclusion involves common interests to address changes effectively ???for the benefit of all on Earth across generations.???

TitleMeasurement for the Sea : Supporting the Marine Environment and the Blue Economy
Author(s)Daponte, Pasquale;Rossi, Giovanni Battista;Piscopo, Vincenzo
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIII, 321 p. 115 illus., 98 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteIn the history of humankind, the sea has always played a key role as a privileged medium for communication, commerce and contact among population centers. It constitutes an essential ecosystem, and an invaluable reservoir and source of food for all living beings. Therefore, its heath is a critical challenge for the survival of all humanity, particularly as one the most important environmental components targeted by global warming. Measuring and monitoring techniques are key tools for managing the marine environment and for supporting the Blue Economy. With this perspective, a series of annual international events, entitled MetroSea (Metrology for the Sea) was begun in 2017. Their increasing success inspired this book, which provides an anthology of tutorials dealing with a representative selection of topics of concern to a broad readership. The book covers two broad application areas, marine hydrography and meteorology, and then deals with instrumentation for measurement at sea. Typical metrological issues such as calibration and traceability, are considered, for both physical and chemical quantities. Key techniques, such as underwater acoustic investigation, remote sensing, measurement of waves and monitoring networks, are treated alongside marine geology and the monitoring of animal species. Economic and legal aspects of metrology for navigation are also discussed. Such an unparalleled wide vision of measurement for the sea will be of interest to a broad audience of scientists, engineers, economists, and their students.

TitleTurbulence : A Fundamental Approach for Scientists and Engineers
Author(s)Aliabadi, Amir A
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXVI, 297 p. 85 illus., 30 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook explains turbulent flows using an introductory but fundamental approach to teaching the core principles, striking a balance between theoretical and practical aspects of the topic without overwhelming the reader with mathematical detail. It is aimed at students in various engineering disciplines???mechanical, civil, environmental???and the geosciences. It is divided in five parts. Part 1 provides the fundamentals of turbulence, main hypotheses, and analysis tools; Part 2 illustrates various measurement techniques used to study turbulent flows; Part 3 explains the modelling and simulation frameworks to study turbulent flows; Part 4 describes brief applications of turbulence in engineering and sciences; and Part 5 presents basic statistical, mathematical, and numerical tools. Elucidates the theory behind turbulence in a concise yet rigorous manner; Combines theoretical, computational, experimental, and applied aspects of the topic; Reinforces concepts with practice problems at the end of each chapter
