DescriptionXIII, 222 p. 67 illus., 1 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook on Underwater Acoustics has a structure that is more organic than logical. It thereby unifies diverse areas of research, including topics of signal processing, the sonar equation, sources and receivers, scattering and reverberation, wave propagation, propagation models, and inverse problems. It also provides code fragments written in Python which complement the discussion. This is a book written for both beginners and specialists, as well as for biologists, oceanographers, computer engineers, physicists, and mathematicians, and for civilian and naval personnel who are looking for a introductory overview of the topic

TitleThe Physics of Planet Earth and Its Natural Wonders
Author(s)Livanov, Dmitry
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2023.
DescriptionX, 297 p. 250 illus., 244 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteFrom earthquakes to the northern lights and tsunamis to glacier movement, the author explains thousands of phenomena in the world around us. All of this is done using language that is simple and understandable, and at the same time this book does not try to deceive the reader, as materials of this nature often do, but uses exact physical formulas where they are needed. This book serves as an invaluable reference for physics teachers and should inspire high school students to study physics. Many of them will very likely be able to understand that riveting events and phenomena lie behind those very same formulas that just yesterday seemed so boring. This is an excellent and unique way of easily submerging oneself into the world of science and a non-stop intellectual challenge that lures the reader in much more than any game of chess. Sir Andre Geim, 2010 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics

TitleBuilding Common Interests in the Arctic Ocean with Global Inclusion : Volume 2
Author(s)Berkman, Paul Arthur;Vylegzhanin, Alexander N;Young, Oran R;Balton, David A;??vretveit, Ole Rasmus
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXL, 451 p. 72 illus., 67 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book contains an inclusive compilation of perspectives about the Arctic Ocean with contributions that extend from Indigenous residents and early career scientists to Foreign Ministers, involving perspectives across the spectrum of subnational-national-international jurisdictions. The Arctic Ocean is being transformed with global climate warming into a seasonally ice-free sea, creating challenges as well as opportunities that operate short-to-long term, underscoring the necessity to make informed decisions across a continuum of urgencies from security to sustainability time scales. The Arctic Ocean offers a case study with lessons that are especially profound at this moment when humankind is exposed to a pandemic, awakening a common interest in survival across our globally-interconnected civilization unlike any period since the Second World War. This second volume in the Informed Decisionmaking for Sustainability series reveals that building global inclusion involves common interests to address changes effectively ???for the benefit of all on Earth across generations.???

TitleMeasurement for the Sea : Supporting the Marine Environment and the Blue Economy
Author(s)Daponte, Pasquale;Rossi, Giovanni Battista;Piscopo, Vincenzo
PublicationCham, 1. Imprint: Springer 2. Springer International Publishing, 2022.
DescriptionXIII, 321 p. 115 illus., 98 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteIn the history of humankind, the sea has always played a key role as a privileged medium for communication, commerce and contact among population centers. It constitutes an essential ecosystem, and an invaluable reservoir and source of food for all living beings. Therefore, its heath is a critical challenge for the survival of all humanity, particularly as one the most important environmental components targeted by global warming. Measuring and monitoring techniques are key tools for managing the marine environment and for supporting the Blue Economy. With this perspective, a series of annual international events, entitled MetroSea (Metrology for the Sea) was begun in 2017. Their increasing success inspired this book, which provides an anthology of tutorials dealing with a representative selection of topics of concern to a broad readership. The book covers two broad application areas, marine hydrography and meteorology, and then deals with instrumentation for measurement at sea. Typical metrological issues such as calibration and traceability, are considered, for both physical and chemical quantities. Key techniques, such as underwater acoustic investigation, remote sensing, measurement of waves and monitoring networks, are treated alongside marine geology and the monitoring of animal species. Economic and legal aspects of metrology for navigation are also discussed. Such an unparalleled wide vision of measurement for the sea will be of interest to a broad audience of scientists, engineers, economists, and their students.

DescriptionXVI, 297 p. 85 illus., 30 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis textbook explains turbulent flows using an introductory but fundamental approach to teaching the core principles, striking a balance between theoretical and practical aspects of the topic without overwhelming the reader with mathematical detail. It is aimed at students in various engineering disciplines???mechanical, civil, environmental???and the geosciences. It is divided in five parts. Part 1 provides the fundamentals of turbulence, main hypotheses, and analysis tools; Part 2 illustrates various measurement techniques used to study turbulent flows; Part 3 explains the modelling and simulation frameworks to study turbulent flows; Part 4 describes brief applications of turbulence in engineering and sciences; and Part 5 presents basic statistical, mathematical, and numerical tools. Elucidates the theory behind turbulence in a concise yet rigorous manner; Combines theoretical, computational, experimental, and applied aspects of the topic; Reinforces concepts with practice problems at the end of each chapter
