Title | Physics and Technology of Ultracold Atomic Gases |
Author(s) | Onofrio, Roberto;Salasnich, Luca |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. |
Description | X, 199 p. 51 illus., 34 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book is based on lecture notes originally developed for introductory graduate courses offered by the authors at Dartmouth College and the University of Padova. The first two chapters analyze quantum degenerate gases and various cooling and trapping techniques for atoms. The remaining three chapters discuss ultracold atoms as weakly interacting, strongly interacting, and non-interacting coherent systems. The third chapter presents multiple pieces of evidence for quantum degeneracy in Bose and Fermi gases, followed by peculiar features such as superfluidity and the formation of topological defects. The fourth chapter addresses strongly correlated systems, discussing the BCS-BEC crossover in fermionic gases and quantum phase transitions, including their dependence on effective dimensionality. The fifth chapter offers a more specific discussion of quantum coherence in ultracold atoms and their potential as a platform for quantum metrology and quantum emulation. Four appendices provide more quantitative details of theoretical tools used in the last two chapters. Each chapter concludes with problems and a list of more specialized material. The main goal is to introduce interested students to ultracold atom physics research topics and expose scientists working in other areas of frontier physics to this novel and exciting research direction. This book is also intended to complement existing textbooks in standard courses on condensed matter physics, demonstrating how some general elements of the latter can be understood by continuously increasing the interactions between ultracold and quantum degenerate atoms under controlled external conditions |

Title | Our Concept of the Earth : What We Know About Our Planet and How It Was Discovered |
Author(s) | Boschi, Lapo |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. |
Description | XVI, 850 p. 206 illus., 16 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | With its new, unique look at the physics of the earth and at how this field got to where it is today, this is not a conventional textbook, but could easily be used as one. Designed to be understood by readers with no background in the earth sciences and only little previous knowledge of math and physics, Our Concept of the Earth differs from other geophysics books in that it places geo-scientific concepts in their historical context: ideas are presented in chronological order, according to the moment they emerged, one in response to the other, throughout the history of the discipline. In this way, the material covered in any given section of the book rests on simpler previously established concepts that are explained earlier in the book. The book is extremely self-contained and lends itself to being read from beginning to end, an experience that will captivate and even entertain a broad range of readers in academia and beyond |

Title | Non-classical States of Light : Generation via Strong-Field Processes and Applications in Quantum Key Distribution |
Author(s) | Rivera-Dean, Javier |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. |
Description | XX, 300 p. 93 illus., 84 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This doctoral thesis has a dual focus. Firstly, it studies the generation of non-classical states of light through strong-field processes, where light-matter interactions involve light intensities contending with the forces binding electrons to their nuclei. This exploration demonstrates the utility of strong-field phenomena in generating non-classical states of light, with properties dependent on specific dynamics and materials involved in the excitation. Secondly, it investigates the constraints and prerequisites of non-classical light sources???beyond those studied in the first part???for advancing quantum communication applications, specifically in quantum key distribution. The aim here is to create a secret key exclusively known by the communicating parties for encrypting and decrypting messages. As a whole, this work serves as a foundational step towards leveraging strong-field physics as a prospective tool for quantum information science applications, as well as displaying the advantages and limitations of photonic-based setups for quantum key distribution. With its very clear style of presentation, the book is an essential reference for future researchers working in this field |

Title | Lectures on the Mechanical Foundations of Thermodynamics |
Author(s) | Campisi, Michele |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. |
Description | XV, 114 p. 22 illus., 17 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book provides a modern pedagogical exposition of the mechanical approach to statistical mechanics initiated by Boltzmann with his early works (1866???1871). Despite the later contribution by Helmholtz, Boltzmann himself (1884???1887), Gibbs, P. Hertz, and Einstein, the mechanical approach remained almost unknown to the modern reader, in favour of the celebrated combinatorial approach, developed by Boltzmann himself during his probabilistic turn (1876???1884). The brief constitutes an ideal continuation of a graduate course of classical mechanics and requires knowledge of basic calculus in many dimensions (including differential forms), thermodynamics, and probability theory, besides Hamiltonian mechanics. The cornerstone of the whole presentation is the ergodic hypothesis. Special attention is devoted to Massieu potentials (the Legendre transforms of the entropy) which are most natural in statistical mechanics and also allow for a more direct treatment of the topic of ensemble equivalence. In this second edition, a chapter is added that addresses the long-debated question of how the second law of thermodynamics can be reconciled with mechanics, by taking advantage of modern methods of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics |

Title | Mars and the Earthlings: A Realistic View on Mars Exploration and Settlement |
Author(s) | Verseux, Cyprien;Gargaud, Muriel;Lehto, Kirsi;Viso, Michel |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. |
Description | XLIX, 403 p. 91 illus., 86 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | In an era of public Mars fascination, this book offers an objective presentation of the challenges of crewed Mars missions and discusses scenarios of Mars settlements under scientific, technical, social, economic , ethical and political aspects. With the aim to make the reader comprehend what is plausible and what is at stake, the book tries to clarify misconceptions and half-truths spreading rapidly in the public. The authors argue that approximations and misinformation should be countered for two main reasons. First, to avoid missing out on the benefits that Mars exploration may bring, including major scientific discoveries and an inspiring, federative human endeavor. Second, to remediate dangerous delusions ??? such as the idea that humanity could be transferred there should the Earth become inhabitable in the near term. In preparation for this book a group of European, world-renowned scientists from fields as diverse as astronomy, planetology, geology, biology, philosophy, or economics, as well as astronauts and science-fiction writers, was gathered to discuss Mars missions ranging from near-term robotic missions, all the way to large-scale settlements and even the feasibility of terraforming. For each, they draw arguments from their domains of expertise to discuss what is feasible and what is desirable. The result provides researchers with an objective review of the field, policy makers with a reference to make informed decisions, and the general public with a tool to form educated opinions |

Title | Architectures and Circuits for Distributed Quantum Computing |
Author(s) | Cuomo, Daniele |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. |
Description | XI, 76 p. 75 illus., 68 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This thesis treats networks providing quantum computation based on distributed paradigms. Compared to architectures relying on one processor, a network promises to be more scalable and less fault-prone. Developing a distributed system able to provide practical quantum computation comes with numerous challenges, each of which need to be faced with careful analysis in order to create a seamless integration of multiple engineered components. In accordance with hardware technologies, currently under development worldwide, telegates represent the fundamental inter-processor operations. Each telegate consists of several tasks: i) entanglement generation and distribution, ii) local operations, and iii) classical communications. Entanglement generation and distribution is an expensive resource, as it is time-consuming. The primary contribution of this thesis lies in the extensive analysis of some complex scenarios of general interest. We propose numerical models that help to identifythe interdependence between computation and communication. With the support of some of the best tools for reasoning -- i.e. network optimization, circuit manipulation, group theory and ZX-calculus -- we lay out new perspectives on the way a distributed quantum computing system should be developed |

Title | Modeling Failure and Fracture of Soft Solids and Fluids |
Author(s) | Volokh, Konstantin |
Publication | Cham, 1. Imprint: Springer
2. Springer Nature Switzerland, 2024. |
Description | XI, 167 p. 110 illus., 87 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book applies approaches of nonlinear continuum mechanics used to model fracture and failures in soft materials. Two physical observations underlie mathematical theories described in this book. First, the energy of molecular bonds is bounded and, consequently, the macroscopic strain energy must be bounded. Second, the broken bonds are diffused and, consequently, highly localized material sink takes place. The first observation allows describing material failure as the damage initiation. The second observation allows modeling cracks as damage localization and propagation. This book builds on the experiences of ???Soft Matter Mechanics??? by Konstantin Volokh |
