Publication | California, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2001. |
Description | xiv,294p. |
Series | (Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series; 233) |
Contents Note | P Cygni was discovered on August 18, 1600 while in outburst. Subsequent observations of the star have now covered a time span of four centuries. Especially the more frequent and accurate observations of the 20th century have revealed much about the nature of this enigmatic object. To mark the 400th anniversary of the discovery of P Cygni, a workshop was held to discuss the progress made towards understanding the peculiar hypergiant, to ensure that the lessons learned from its study are not lost , and that these results can be applied to the study and understanding of similar objects and of the nature and evolution of massive stars in general. |

Title | Next generation wide-field multi-object spectroscopy : Proceedings of a workshop held at National Optical Astronomy Observatory, Tucson, Arizona, USA, 11-12 October 2001 |
Author(s) | Michael J.I. Brown (ed.);Arjun Dey (ed.) |
Publication | California, Astronomy Society of the Pacific, 2002. |
Description | xii, 144p. |
Series | (Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series; 280) |
Contents Note | In October 2000, NOAO held the :First Workshop on the O/IR Ground-Based System" in Scottsdale, Arizona. The goal of that workshop was to identify ways in which public and private observatories in the US could work together to maintain a broad base of cuting edge capabilities. The need of a highly multiplexed spectroscopic capability was one of the most desired capabilities identified by that workshop. Since this recommendation followed on the heels of an NOAO whitepaper on the scientific case for a telescope dedicated to wide-field multi-object spectroscopy (SWIFT : A Spectroscopic Wide-Field Telescope", NOAO decided to host a community workshop to investigae the scientific need for such a capability and its technical challenges. |
