TitleStellar pulsations: Impact of New Instrumentation and New Insights
Author(s)J. C. Suarez (ed.);R. Garrido (ed.);L. A. Balona (ed.);J. Christensen-Dalsgaard (ed.)
PublicationBerlin, Springer-Verlag, 2012.
Descriptionxvii, 293p.
Series(Astrophysics and Space Science Proceedings)
Abstract NoteAnalyses of photometric time series obtained from the MOST, CoRoT and Kepler space missions were presented at the 20th conference on Stellar Pulsations (Granada, September 2011). These results are leading to a re-appraisal of our views on stellar pulsation in some stars and posing some new and unexpected challenges. The very important and exciting role played by innovative ground-based observational techniques, such as interferometric measurements of giant pulsating stars and high-resolution spectroscopy in the near infrared, is also discussed. These Proceedings are distinguished by the format of the conference, which brings together a variety of related but different topics not found in other meetings of this nature.

TitleHot subdwarf stars and related objects: Proceedings of a workshop held at Otto-Friedrich-Universitat, Ger
Author(s)Ulrich Heber (ed.);Simon Jeffery (ed.);Ralf Napiwotzki (ed.)
PublicationSan Francisco, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2008.
Descriptionxv, 383p.
Series(Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series)
Abstract NoteHot Subdwarfs represent several stages in the very late evolution of low-mass stars. B-type subdwarfs are helium-core burners at the extreme end of the horizontal branch, while O types represent a rich mixture of post-giant branch, post-horizontal branch and post-asymptotic giant branch stars. They are important for many fields of modern astrophysics. Hot subdwarf stars provide: • The UV light of old unresolved populations, such as giant elliptical galaxies, which may be used to measure their ages • laboratories to study plasma processes in high-gravity atmospheres, including radiatively-driven atomic diffusion and its consequences for the chemical composition of the star’s outer layers. • laboratories to study close binary evolution. Many have invisible companions, mostly white-dwarf mergers, while one has a planet, and others may have neutron-star or black-hole companions • laboratories for asteroseismology. Pulsations check the evolution models by giving direct measurements of mass and radius, and the potential to explore other internal properties. New instruments and theoretical models, as well as a vibrant young research community, are forcin rapid progress in all of these areas. These proceedings provide and informative snapshot of current research. They also include a small number of papers which have been extended to include an introduction for non-specialists. These papers offer a valuable resource useful to a wide audience including beginning graduate students and experienced reviewers for several years to come.

TitleRadial and nonradial pulsations as probes of steller physics : Proceedings of the 185th colloquium of the International Astronomical Union, held at Institute of Astronomy, Catholic University of Leuven, Leuven, Belgium 26 - 31 July, 2001
Author(s)Conny Aerts (ed.);Timothy R. Bedding (ed.);Jorgen Christensen-Dalsgaard (ed.)
PublicationCalifornia, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2002.
Descriptionxxvii, 667p.
Contents NoteThe meeting was dedicated to the scientific achievements of two Belgians; Paul Ledoux (1914 - 1988) Paul Smeyers (1934 -) both pioneers in the theoretical research on stellar oscillations. The idea of using non-radial pulsations to probe stellar interiors was introduced by Paul Ledoux in a seminal paper in Astrophysical Journal published in 1951. This paper initiated the research domain which is nowadays termed as 'asteroseismology'. Paul Ledoux laid down the theory of the hydrodynamics of stellar oscillations and stellar stability. Paul Smeyers contributed significantly in many different areas of theoretical studies of stellar oscillations.
