TitleBig data in astronomy: Scientific Data Processing for Advanced Radio Telescope
Author(s)Linghe Kong (ed.);Tian Huang (ed.);Yongxin Zhu (ed.);Shenghua Yu (ed.)
PublicationAmsterdam, Elsevier Science Publishers, 2020.
Descriptionxv, 422p.
Abstract NoteBig Data in Radio Astronomy: Scientific Data Processing for Advanced Radio Telescopes provides the latest research developments in big data methods and techniques for radio astronomy. Providing examples from such projects as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), the world’s largest radio telescope that generates over an Exabyte of data every day, the book offers solutions for coping with the challenges and opportunities presented by the exponential growth of astronomical data. Presenting state-of-the-art results and research, this book is a timely reference for both practitioners and researchers working in radio astronomy, as well as students looking for a basic understanding of big data in astronomy.

TitleMultimessenger astronomy in practice
Author(s)Miroslav D. Filipovic;Nicholas F. H. Tothill
PublicationBristol, Institute of Physics Publishing, 2021.
Abstract NoteThe first non-electromagnetic messengers from space were discovered in the early 20th century, but it is only now that multimessenger astronomy is coming into its own. The aim of Multimessenger Astronomy in Practice is to aid an astronomer who is new to research in a particular area of multimessenger astronomy. Covering electromatic radiation from radio through to gamma-rays, and moving on to neutrino, cosmic-ray and gravitational wave astronomy, it gives the reader an overview of the celestial objects detected in each region, the unique methods used to measure them, as well as the principles and methods of data collection, calibration, reduction and analysis. Further chapters cover dark matter, the multimessenger search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), and data science with machine learning. The book will help educate astronomy students taking a multimessenger approach, and add to the knowledge of professional astronomers about what is available in today's multimessenger toolbox.

TitleThe Early years of radio astronomy : reflections fifty years after Jansky's discovery
Author(s)edited by W.T. Sullivan III
Description1 online resource (ix, 421 pages) : digital, PDF file(s)
Abstract NoteRadio astronomy has revolutionized the course of modern astronomy. Marking the fiftieth anniversary of Jansky's discovery in 1933 of extraterrestrial radio emission, Professor Sullivan asked many of the pioneers in the field to set down their versions of events and the people who made them. Each of the score of contributors seeks to give a good 'feeling' for the times to the great majority of readers who will not have experienced them. Over 150 illustrations, mostly historical photographs of men and machines, enliven the various recollections and reflections. The list of contributors includes many of the key personalities and covers all the major laboratories and countries involved in radio astronomy before 1960. In addition to the radio astronomers themselves, there are contributions from optical astronomers and theorists closely related to the field, as well as historians of twentieth century astronomy

TitleEssential radio astronomy
Author(s)James J. Condon ;Scott M. Ransom
PublicationPrinceton, Princeton University Press, 2016.
Descriptionx, 363p.
Series(Princeton Series in Modern Observational Astronomy)
Abstract NoteEssential Radio Astronomy is the only textbook on the subject specifically designed for a one-semester introductory course for advanced undergraduates or graduate students in astronomy and astrophysics. It starts from first principles in order to fill gaps in students' backgrounds, make teaching easier for professors who are not expert radio astronomers, and provide a useful reference to the essential equations used by practitioners. This unique textbook reflects the fact that students of multiwavelength astronomy typically can afford to spend only one semester studying the observational techniques particular to each wavelength band. Essential Radio Astronomy presents only the most crucial concepts--succinctly and accessibly. It covers the general principles behind radio telescopes, receivers, and digital backends without getting bogged down in engineering details. Emphasizing the physical processes in radio sources, the book's approach is shaped by the view that radio astrophysics owes more to thermodynamics than electromagnetism. Proven in the classroom and generously illustrated throughout, Essential Radio Astronomy is an invaluable resource for students and researchers alike.

TitleMaser sources in astrophysics
Author(s)Malcolm Gray
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2012.
Descriptionx, 419p.
Series(Cambridge Astrophysics Series)
Abstract NoteMasers are observed at a range of scales - from comets, through star-forming clouds, to galactic nuclei - and have many astrophysical applications, for example measuring cosmological distances. Written for postgraduate students and professional researchers in molecular astrophysics, this volume is an up-to-date survey of the theory and observations of astrophysical maser sources and their use as astronomical tools. The book summarizes the history of the discovery of various maser molecules and lines, and discusses maser observations on various scales. The theory is discussed in detail, including the quantum-mechanical response of the molecules, before being linked to more general radiation transfer. A discussion of spectral-line radio astronomy techniques shows how maser observations can be applied more generally to radio astronomy. The book introduces new and projected instruments, including ALMA and SKA. Additional topics address the radiation statistics of astrophysical masers, and numerical methods of analysis.
