PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXIX, 219 p. 167 illus., 153 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book serves as a comprehensive guide for using a Nexstar Evolution mount with WiFi SkyPortal control, walking the reader through the process for aligning and operating the system from a tablet or smartphone. The next generation Go-To mount from Celestron, this is compatible not only with the Nextstar Evolution but also with older mounts. It is the ideal resource for anyone who owns, or is thinking of owning, a Nexstar Evolution telescope, or adapting their existing Celestron mount. Pros and cons of the system are thoroughly covered with a critical depth that addresses any possible question by users. Beginning with a brief history of Go-To telescopes and the genesis of this still new technology, the author covers every aspect of the newly expanding capability in observing. This includes the associated Sky Portal smartphone and tablet application, the transition from the original Nexstar GoTo system to the new SkyPortal system, the use of the Sky Portal application with its Sky Safari 4 basic software and Celestron WiFi adaptations, and discussions on the use of SkyPortal application using the Celestron adapter on older Celestron mounts. Comments and recommendations for equipment enable the reader to successfully use and appreciate the new WiFi capability without becoming overwhelmed. Extensively illustrated using actual screenshots from the program interface, this is the only guide to the Nextstar SkyPortal an observer will need

TitleVideo Astronomy on the Go : Using Video Cameras With Small Telescopes
Author(s)Ashley, Joseph
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2017.
DescriptionXIII, 205 p. 75 illus., 34 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteAuthor Joseph Ashley explains video astronomy's many benefits in this comprehensive reference guide for amateurs. Video astronomy offers a wonderful way to see objects in far greater detail than is possible through an eyepiece, and the ability to use the modern, entry-level video camera to image deep space objects is a wonderful development for urban astronomers in particular, as it helps sidestep the issue of light pollution. The author addresses both the positive attributes of these cameras for deep space imaging as well as the limitations, such as amp glow. The equipment needed for imaging as well as how it is configured is identified with hook-up diagrams and photographs. Imaging techniques are discussed together with image processing (stacking and image enhancement). Video astronomy has evolved to offer great results and great ease of use, and both novices and more experienced amateurs can use this book to find the set-up that works best for them. Flexible and portable, they open up a whole new way of seeing space

TitleApplication of FPGA to Real???Time Machine Learning : Hardware Reservoir Computers and Software Image Processing
Author(s)Antonik, Piotr
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXXII, 171 p. 68 illus., 8 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book lies at the interface of machine learning ??? a subfield of computer science that develops algorithms for challenging tasks such as shape or image recognition, where traditional algorithms fail ??? and photonics ??? the physical science of light, which underlies many of the optical communications technologies used in our information society. It provides a thorough introduction to reservoir computing and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Recently, photonic implementations of reservoir computing (a machine learning algorithm based on artificial neural networks) have made a breakthrough in optical computing possible. In this book, the author pushes the performance of these systems significantly beyond what was achieved before. By interfacing a photonic reservoir computer with a high-speed electronic device (an FPGA), the author successfully interacts with the reservoir computer in real time, allowing him to considerably expand its capabilities and range of possible applications. Furthermore, the author draws on his expertise in machine learning and FPGA programming to make progress on a very different problem, namely the real-time image analysis of optical coherence tomography for atherosclerotic arteries

TitleBloodstain Pattern Analysis in Crime Scenarios
Author(s)Choromanski, Kacper
PublicationSingapore, Springer Singapore, 2020.
DescriptionX, 65 p. 29 illus., 28 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book introduces the core concepts of bloodstain pattern analysis that help to understand and make independent contributions to crime scenes accurately. It presents a bridge between new research results and the practical work field of crime scene investigation in bloodstain pattern analysis, by showing and detailing reports of two different scenarios. The scenarios presented have an extensive description of gathered evidence and are diversified with real crime scene photography and sketches. This kind of case report is rare in scientific books, but the author, as a researcher, has permission from the authorities to present the cases. The book finally concludes with the main problems of modern bloodstain pattern analysis and discusses the way forward

TitleFeature Learning and Understanding : Algorithms and Applications
Author(s)Zhao, Haitao;Lai, Zhihui;Leung, Henry;Zhang, Xianyi
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2020.
DescriptionXIV, 291 p. 126 illus., 109 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book covers the essential concepts and strategies within traditional and cutting-edge feature learning methods thru both theoretical analysis and case studies. Good features give good models and it is usually not classifiers but features that determine the effectiveness of a model. In this book, readers can find not only traditional feature learning methods, such as principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and geometrical-structure-based methods, but also advanced feature learning methods, such as sparse learning, low-rank decomposition, tensor-based feature extraction, and deep-learning-based feature learning. Each feature learning method has its own dedicated chapter that explains how it is theoretically derived and shows how it is implemented for real-world applications. Detailed illustrated figures are included for better understanding. This book can be used by students, researchers, and engineers looking for a reference guide for popular methods of feature learning and machine intelligence

TitleInside PixInsight
Author(s)Keller, Warren A
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2018.
DescriptionXXV, 427 p. 291 illus., 74 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NotePixInsight has taken the astro-imaging world by storm. As the first comprehensive postprocessing platform to be created by astro-imagers for astro-imagers, it has for many replaced other generic graphics editors as the software of choice. PixInsight has been embraced by professionals such as the James Webb (and Hubble) Space Telescope's science imager Joseph DePasquale and Calar Alto's Vicent Peris, as well as thousands of amateurs around the world. While PixInsight is extremely powerful, very little has been printed on the subject. The first edition of this book broke that mold, offering a comprehensive look into the software???s capabilities. This second edition expands on the several new processes added to the PixInsight platform since that time, detailing and demonstrating each one with a now-expanded workflow. Addressing topics such as PhotometricColorCalibration, Large-Scale Pixel Rejection, LocalNormalization and a host of other functions, this text remains the authoritative guide to PixInsight
