Author(s)Biryukov, Sergey V;Gulyaev, Yuri V;Krylov, Victor V;Plessky, Victor P
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995.
DescriptionX, 389 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSurface Acoustic Waves in Inhomogeneous Media covers almost all important problems of the interaction of different types of surface acoustic waves with surface inhomogeneities. The problems of surface acoustic wave interaction with periodic topographic gratings widely used in filters and resonators are under careful consideration. The most important results of surface wave scattering by local defects such as grooves, random roughness, elastic wedges are given. Different theoretical approaches and practical rules for solving the surface wave problems are presented

TitleUsing MSC/NASTRAN : Statics and Dynamics
Author(s)Cifuentes, Arturo O
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1989.
DescriptionXIV, 458 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe idea of writing this book came up one night while having dinner with Ventura at the Crocodile Cafe in Pasadena. This was really a joint project, that could have turned into a nightmare without her support, encouragement, and expertise in personal computers. For all these things, and for tolerating my sometimes single-minded attention, I am very grateful to her. I am also very much indebted to six good friends, Paul Burridge, Mladen Chargin, Gary Dilley, Carl Hennrich, Hector Jensen and Mark Miller, who read the entire manuscript of this book and made many useful suggestions. I also want to thank Burt Alperson for his guidance and advice during the preparation of this book. Finally, I thank the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Southern California for the support provided during the course of this project, and my students of all these years for asking tough questions. TitleComputational Approaches in Condensed-Matter Physics : Proceedings of the 6th Nishinomiya-Yukawa Memorial Symposium, Nishinomiya, Japan, October 24 and 25, 1991
Author(s)Miyashita, Seiji;Imada, Masatoshi;Takayama, Hajime
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1992.
DescriptionXI, 299 p : online resource
Abstract NoteInteracting many-body systems are the main subjects of research in theoretical condensed matter physics, and they are the source of both the interest and the difficulty in this field. In order to understand the macroscopic properties of matter in terms of macroscopic knowledge, many analytic and approximate methods have been introduced. The contributions to this proceedings volume focus on the most recent developments of computational approaches in condensed matter physics. Monte Carlo methods and molecular dynamics simulations applied to strongly correlated classical and quantum systems such as electron systems, quantum spin systems, spin glassss, coupled map systems, polymers and other random and comlex systems are reviewed. Comprising easy to follow introductions to each field covered and also more specialized contributions, this proceedings volume explains why computational approaches are necessary and how different fields are related to each other

TitleNonlinear Structures in Physical Systems : Pattern Formation, Chaos, and Waves Proceedings of the Second Woodward Conference San Jose State University November 17???18, 1989
Author(s)Lam, Lui;Morris, Hedley C
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer New York, 1990.
DescriptionX, 331 p : online resource
Abstract NoteStructures in Nature are ubiquitous and fascinating. In natural and mathematical systems nonlinear structures, roughly speaking, are those resulting from nonlinear equations, the investigation of which forms a large and integral part of the new branch of science-the nonlinear science. Like nonlinear science in general, non?? linear structures is a truly interdisciplinary subject which involves physicists, chemists, biologists, material scientists, mathematicians, engineers, etc. In view of the recent rapid developments in this subject and the existence of a converging picture which acts to unify some of the previously considered separate subfields of research, we think it is time to bring together various experts to exchange ideas and share their newest findings. The Second Woodward Confer?? ence afforded us a chance to do exactly this. Accordingly, this second conference in the series was devoted to the subject of Nonlinear Structures in Physical Sys?? tems: Pattern Formation, Chaos and Waves, and was held at San Jose State Uni?? versity on November 17-18, 1989

TitleEnergy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy
Author(s)Reimer, Ludwig
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1995.
DescriptionXIII, 425 p. 157 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteEnergy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy (EFTEM) presents a summary of the electron optics, the electron-specimen interactions, and the operation and contrast modes of this new field of analytical electron microscopy. The electron optics of filter lenses and the progress in the correction of aberrations are discussed in detail. An evaluation of our present knowledge of plasmon losses and inner-shell ionisations is of increasing interest for a quantitative application of EFTEM in materials and life sciences. This can be realized not only by filtering the elastically scattered electrons but mainly by imaging and analyzing with inelastically scattered electrons at different energy losses up to 2000 eV. The strength of EFTEM is the combination of the modes of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), Electron Spectroscopic Imaging (ESI) and Diffraction (ESD) and of energy filtering Reflection Electron Microscopy (REM) in one instrument

TitleComputer Simulation Studies in Condensed Matter Physics III : Proceedings of the Third Workshop Athens, GA, USA, February 12???16, 1990
Author(s)Landau, David P;Mon, K.K;Sch??ttler, Heinz-Bernd
PublicationBerlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1991.
DescriptionVIII, 215 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThe contribution of computer simulation studies to our understanding of the prop?? erties of a wide range of condensed matter systems is now weIl established. The Center for Simulational Physics of the University of Georgia has been hosting a series of annual workshops with the intent of bringing together experienced prac?? titioners in the field, as weIl as relative newcomers, to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and recent results. This year's workshop, the third in the series, was held February 12-16, 1990. These proceedings are arecord of the workshop and are published with the goal of timely dissemination of the papers to a wider audience. The proceedings are divided into four parts. The first contains invited pa?? pers dealing with simulational studies of classical systems and also includes an introduction to some new simulation techniques. Aseparate section is devoted to invited papers on quantum systems, including new results for strongly correlated electron and quantum spin models believed to be important for the description of high-Tc superconductors. The third part consists of a single invited paper, which presents a comprehensive treatment of issues associated with high perfor?? mance computing, including differences in architectures and a discussion of access strategies. The contributed papers constitute the final part

TitleComplexity and the arrow of time
Author(s)Charles H. Lineweaver (ed.);Paul C. W. Davies (ed.);Michael Ruse (ed.)
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2013.
Descriptionxii, 357p.
Abstract NoteThere is a widespread assumption that the universe in general, and life in particular, is 'getting more complex with time'. This book brings together a wide range of experts in science, philosophy and theology and unveils their joint effort in exploring this idea. They confront essential problems behind the theory of complexity and the role of life within it: what is complexity? When does it increase, and why? Is the universe evolving towards states of ever greater complexity and diversity? If so, what is the source of this universal enrichment? This book addresses those difficult questions, and offers a unique cross-disciplinary perspective on some of the most profound issues at the heart of science and philosophy. Readers will gain insights in complexity that reach deep into key areas of physics, biology, complexity science, philosophy and religion.
