Title | Adventure Diffusion : From Meandering Molecules to the Spreading of Plants, Humans, and Ideas |
Author(s) | Vogl, Gero |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2019. |
Description | X, 157 p. 54 illus., 32 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This easy-to read book looks at the many ways in which diffusion bears on processes that involve dispersion, starting from the Brownian motion of molecules, covering the invasion of exotic plants, migration of populations, epidemics, and extending to the spreading of languages and ideas. Recently, there has been a growing interest in understanding migrations, diffusion and spreading outside the ???hard??? natural sciences of physics and chemistry, for example the spreading of plants introduced as a result of globalization. Another fascinating story is that of human migration in the distant past, i.e. the immigration of our ancestors who brought agriculture from the Near East, or the fast spread of the Palaeo-Indians into the Americas after the end of the Ice Age. Likewise, the spread of languages in the past, and even more so the current spread and retreat of languages will be described here in terms of diffusion. By understanding these principles, there is hope that some of the less common languages that are threatened by globalization can be saved. Another important implication discussed by the author concerns the outbreak of epidemics; these may be mitigated if we understand their spreading mechanism. Last but not least the spreading of ideas and innovations, a process which changes the world sometimes faster than we wish, can also be usefully described in this picture |

Title | Statistical Physics of Synchronization |
Author(s) | Gupta, Shamik;Campa, Alessandro;Ruffo, Stefano |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2018. |
Description | XVI, 121 p. 32 illus., 27 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book introduces and discusses the analysis of interacting many-body complex systems exhibiting spontaneous synchronization from the perspective of nonequilibrium statistical physics. While such systems have been mostly studied using dynamical system theory, the book underlines the usefulness of the statistical physics approach to obtain insightful results in a number of representative dynamical settings. Although it is intractable to follow the dynamics of a particular initial condition, statistical physics allows to derive exact analytical results in the limit of an infinite number of interacting units. Chapter one discusses dynamical characterization of individual units of synchronizing systems as well as of their interaction and summarizes the relevant tools of statistical physics. The latter are then used in chapters two and three to discuss respectively synchronizing systems with either a first- or a second-order evolution in time. This book provides a timely introduction to the subject and is meant for the uninitiated as well as for experienced researchers working in areas of nonlinear dynamics and chaos, statistical physics, and complex systems |

Title | Optical Response of Nanostructures : Microscopic Nonlocal Theory |
Author(s) | Cho, Kikuo |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2003. |
Description | IX, 174 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book gives a theoretical description of linear and nonlinear optical responses of matter with special emphasis on the microscopic and "nonlocal" nature of resonant response. The response field and induced polarization are determined self-consistently in terms of simultaneous linear or nonlinear polynomial equations. This scheme is a general one with its position between QED and macroscopic response theory, but is most appropriate for determining the dependence of optical signals on the size, shape, and internal structure of a nanostructure sample. As a highlight of the scheme, the multi-resonant enhancement of the DFWM signal is described together with its experimental verification |

Title | Models of Neural Networks IV : Early Vision and Attention |
Author(s) | van Hemmen, J. Leo;Cowan, Jack D;Domany, Eytan |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2002. |
Description | XIII, 413 p. 87 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | Close this book for a moment and look around you. You scan the scene by directing your attention, and gaze, at certain specific objects. Despite the background, you discern them. The process is partially intentional and partially preattentive. How all this can be done is described in the fourth volume of Models of Neural Networks devoted to Early Vision and Atten?? tion that you are holding in your hands. Early vision comprises the first stages of visual information processing. It is as such a scientific challenge whose clarification calls for a penetrating review. Here you see the result. The Heraeus Foundation (Hanau) is to be thanked for its support during the initial phase of this project. John Hertz, who has extensive experience in both computational and ex?? perimental neuroscience, provides in "Neurons, Networks, and Cognition" to neural modeling. John Van Opstal explains in a theoretical introduction "The Gaze Control System" how the eye's gaze control is performed and presents a novel theoretical description incorporating recent experimental results. We then turn to the relay stations thereafter, the lateral genicu?? late nucleus (LGN) and the primary visual cortex. Their anatomy, phys?? iology, functional relations, and ensuing response properties are carefully analyzed by Klaus Funke et al. in "Integrating Anatomy and Physiology of the Primary Visual Pathway: From LGN to Cortex", one of the most comprehensive reviews that is available at the moment |

Title | Dynamical Systems with Applications using MAPLE |
Author(s) | Lynch, Stephen |
Publication | Boston, MA, 1. Birkh??user Boston
2. Imprint: Birkh??user, 2001. |
Description | XIII, 399 p. 83 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | "The text treats a remarkable spectrum of topics and has a little for everyone. It can serve as an introduction to many of the topics of dynamical systems, and will help even the most jaded reader, such as this reviewer, enjoy some of the interactive aspects of studying dynamics using Maple." ???UK Nonlinear News (Review of First Edition) "The book will be useful for all kinds of dynamical systems courses???. [It] shows the power of using a computer algebra program to study dynamical systems, and, by giving so many worked examples, provides ample opportunity for experiments. ??? [It] is well written and a pleasure to read, which is helped by its attention to historical background." ???Mathematical Reviews (Review of First Edition) Since the first edition of this book was published in 2001, Maple??? has evolved from Maple V into Maple 13. Accordingly, this new edition has been thoroughly updated and expanded to include more applications, examples, and exercises, all with solutions; two new chapters on neural networks and simulation have also been added. There are also new sections on perturbation methods, normal forms, Gr??bner bases, and chaos synchronization. The work provides an introduction to the theory of dynamical systems with the aid of Maple. The author has emphasized breadth of coverage rather than fine detail, and theorems with proof are kept to a minimum. Some of the topics treated are scarcely covered elsewhere. Common themes such as bifurcation, bistability, chaos, instability, multistability, and periodicity run through several chapters. The book has a hands-on approach, using Maple as a pedagogical tool throughout. Maple worksheet files are listed at the end of each chapter, and along with commands, programs, and output may be viewed in color at the author???s website. Additional applications and further links of interest may be found at Maplesoft???s Application Center. Dynamical Systems with Applications using Maple is aimed at senior undergraduates, graduate students, and working scientists in various branches of applied mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. Title | Progress in Turbulence and Wind Energy IV : Proceedings of the iTi Conference in Turbulence 2010 |
Author(s) | Oberlack, Martin;Peinke, Joachim;Talamelli, Alessandro;Castillo, Luciano;H??lling, Michael |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2012. |
Description | XIV, 306 p : online resource |
Abstract Note | This fourth issue on "progress in turbulence" is based on the fourth ITI conference (ITI interdisciplinary turbulence initiative), which took place in Bertinoro, North Italy. Leading researchers from the engineering and physical sciences presented latest results in turbulence research. Basic as well as applied research is driven by the rather notorious difficult and essentially unsolved problem of turbulence. In this collection of contributions clear progress can be seen in different aspects, ranging from new quality of numerical simulations to new concepts of experimental investigations and new theoretical developments. The importance of turbulence is shown for a wide range of applications including: combustion, energy, flow control, urban flows, are few examples found in this volume. A motivation was to bring fundamentals of turbulence in connection with renewable energy. This lead us to add a special topic relevant to the impact of turbulence on the wind energy conversion. The structure of the present book is as such that contributions have been bundled according to covering topics i.e. I Basic Turbulence Aspects, II Particle Laden Flows, III Modeling and Simulations, IV, Experimental Methods, V Special Flows, VI Atmospheric Boundary Layer, VII Boundary Layer, VIII Wind Energy and IX Convection. This book is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Tim Nickels.?? Shortly after giving an invited lecture at the 4th ITI conference, the turbulence community lost a world-class scientist, a friend and devoted family man |
