Title | Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory with Applications |
Author(s) | Basaran, Cemal |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XVI, 442 p. 100 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This text describes the mathematical formulation and proof of the unified mechanics theory (UMT) which is based on the unification of Newton???s laws and the laws of thermodynamics. It also presents formulations and experimental verifications of the theory for thermal, mechanical, electrical, corrosion, chemical and fatigue loads, and it discusses why the original universal laws of motion proposed by Isaac Newton in 1687 are incomplete. The author provides concrete examples, such as how Newton???s second law, F = ma, gives the initial acceleration of a soccer ball kicked by a player, but does not tell us how and when the ball would come to a stop. Over the course of Introduction to Unified Mechanics Theory, Dr. Basaran illustrates that Newtonian mechanics does not account for the thermodynamic changes happening in a system over its usable lifetime. And in this context, this book explains how to design a system to perform its intended functions safely over its usable life time and predicts the expected lifetime of the system without using empirical models, a process currently done using Newtonian mechanics and empirical degradation/failure/fatigue models which are curve-fit to test data. Written as a textbook suitable for upper-level undergraduate mechanics courses, as well as first year graduate level courses, this book is the result of over 25 years of scientific activity with the contribution of dozens of scientists from around the world including USA, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Spain, China, India and U.K. Presents engineering mechanics through explanation of the unified mechanics theory with extensive experimental validation and finite element implementation using real world examples Draws the connections to the thermodynamics of degradation in solids from mathematical and microstructural perspective Discusses shortcomings and incompleteness of Newton???s universal laws of motion Posits why the space-time coordinate system is insufficient to describe organic and inorganic systems and modifies Newtonian space-time with introduction of an additional axis (Thermodynamic State Index axis) |

Title | Dynamics, Strength of Materials and Durability in Multiscale Mechanics |
Author(s) | dell'Isola, Francesco;Igumnov, Leonid |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2021. |
Description | XII, 403 p. 227 illus., 170 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book reviews the mathematical modeling and experimental study of systems involving two or more different length scales. The effects of phenomena occurring at the lower length scales on the behavior at higher scales are of intrinsic scientific interest, but can also be very effectively used to determine the behavior at higher length scales or at the macro-level. Efforts to exploit this micro- and macro-coupling are, naturally, being pursued with regard to every aspect of mechanical phenomena. This book focuses on the changes imposed on the dynamics, strength of materials and durability of mechanical systems by related multiscale phenomena. In particular, it addresses: 1: the impacts of effective dissipation due to kinetic energy trapped at lower scales 2: wave propagation in generalized continua 3: nonlinear phenomena in metamaterials 4: the formalization of more general models to describe the exotic behavior of meta-materials 5: the design and study of microstructures aimed at increasing the toughness and durability of novel materials |

Title | Three Body Dynamics and Its Applications to Exoplanets |
Author(s) | Musielak, Zdzislaw;Quarles, Billy |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | VIII, 109 p. 26 illus., 21 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This brief book provides an overview of the gravitational orbital evolution of few-body systems, in particular those consisting of three bodies. The authors present the historical context that begins with the origin of the problem as defined by Newton, which was followed up by Euler, Lagrange, Laplace, and many others. Additionally, they consider the modern works from the 20th and 21st centuries that describe the development of powerful analytical methods by Poincare and others. The development of numerical tools, including modern symplectic methods, are presented as they pertain to the identification of short-term chaos and long term integrations of the orbits of many astronomical architectures such as stellar triples, planets in binaries, and single stars that host multiple exoplanets. The book includes some of the latest discoveries from the Kepler and now K2 missions, as well as applications to exoplanets discovered via the radial velocity method. Specifically, the authors give a unique perspective in relation to the discovery of planets in binary star systems and the current search for extrasolar moons |

Title | Orbital Dynamics in the Gravitational Field of Small Bodies |
Author(s) | Yu, Yang |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2016. |
Description | XVIII, 123 p. 49 illus., 17 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This prizewinning PhD thesis presents a general discussion of the orbital motion close to solar system small bodies (SSSBs), which induce non-central asymmetric gravitational fields in their neighborhoods. It introduces the methods of qualitative theory in nonlinear dynamics to the study of local/global behaviors around SSSBs. Detailed mechanical models are employed throughout this dissertation, and specific numeric techniques are developed to compensate for the difficulties of directly analyzing. Applying this method, several target systems, like asteroid 216 Kleopatra, are explored in great detail, and the results prove to be both revealing and pervasive for a large group of SSSBs. |

Publication | Singapore, Springer Singapore, 2017. |
Description | XLIX, 1455 p. 966 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book presents the latest advances in Discrete Element Methods (DEM) and technology. It is the proceeding of 7th International Conference on DEM which was held at Dalian University of Technology on August 1 - 4, 2016. The subject of this book are the DEM and related computational techniques such as DDA, FEM/DEM, molecular dynamics, SPH, Meshless methods, etc., which are the main computational methods for modeling discontinua. In comparison to continua which have been already studied for a long time, the research of discontinua is relatively new, but increases dramatically in recent years and has already become an important field. This book will benefit researchers and scientists from the academic fields of physics, engineering and applied mathematics, as well as from industry and national laboratories who are interested in the DEM. |

Title | Classical Mechanics with Maxima |
Author(s) | Timberlake, Todd Keene;Mixon, J. Wilson |
Publication | New York, NY, Springer New York, 2016. |
Description | XI, 258 p. 156 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This book guides undergraduate students in the use of Maxima???a computer algebra system???in solving problems in classical mechanics. It functions well as a supplement to a typical classical mechanics textbook. When it comes to problems that are too difficult to solve by hand, computer algebra systems that can perform symbolic mathematical manipulations are a valuable tool. Maxima is particularly attractive in that it is open-source, multiple-platform software that students can download and install free of charge. Lessons learned and capabilities developed using Maxima are easily transferred to other, proprietary software |

Title | Analytical Mechanics |
Author(s) | Helrich, Carl S |
Publication | Cham, Springer International Publishing, 2017. |
Description | XV, 349 p. 58 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This advanced undergraduate textbook begins with the Lagrangian formulation of Analytical Mechanics and then passes directly to the Hamiltonian formulation and the canonical equations, with constraints incorporated through Lagrange multipliers. Hamilton's Principle and the canonical equations remain the basis of the remainder of the text. Topics considered for applications include small oscillations, motion in electric and magnetic fields, and rigid body dynamics. The Hamilton-Jacobi approach is developed with special attention to the canonical transformation in order to provide a smooth and logical transition into the study of complex and chaotic systems. Finally the text has a careful treatment of relativistic mechanics and the requirement of Lorentz invariance. The text??is enriched??with an outline of the history of mechanics, which particularly outlines the importance of the work of Euler, Lagrange, Hamilton and Jacobi. Numerous exercises with solutions support the??exceptionally clear and concise treatment??of Analytical Mechanics. ?? |

Title | Mathematical Theory of Elasticity of Quasicrystals and Its Applications |
Author(s) | Fan, Tian-You |
Publication | Singapore, Springer Singapore, 2016. |
Description | XVI, 452 p. 103 illus., 40 illus. in color : online resource |
Abstract Note | This interdisciplinary work on condensed matter physics, the continuum mechanics of novel materials, and partial differential equations, discusses the mathematical theory of elasticity and hydrodynamics of quasicrystals, as well as its applications. By establishing new partial differential equations of higher order and their solutions under complicated boundary value and initial value conditions, the theories developed here dramatically simplify the solution of complex elasticity problems. Comprehensive and detailed mathematical derivations guide readers through the work. By combining theoretical analysis and experimental data, mathematical studies and practical applications, readers will gain a systematic, comprehensive and in-depth understanding of condensed matter physics, new continuum mechanics and applied mathematics. This new edition covers the latest developments in quasicrystal studies. In particular, it pays special attention to the hydrodynamics, soft-matter quasicrystals, and the Poisson bracket method and its application in deriving hydrodynamic equations. These new sections make the book an even more useful and comprehensive reference guide for researchers working in Condensed Matter Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science |

Title | From Newton to Mandelbrot : A Primer in Theoretical Physics |
Author(s) | Stauffer, Dietrich;Stanley, H. Eugene;Lesne, Annick |
Publication | Berlin, Heidelberg, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2017. |
Description | XIV, 270 p. 84 illus : online resource |
Abstract Note | This textbook takes the reader on a tour of the most important landmarks of theoretical physics: classical, quantum, and statistical mechanics, relativity, electrodynamics, as well as the most modern and exciting of all: elementary particles and the physics of fractals. The second edition has been supplemented with a new chapter devoted to concise though complete presentation of dynamical systems, bifurcations and chaos theory. The treatment is confined to the essentials of each area, presenting all the central concepts and equations at an accessible level. Chapters 1 to 4 contain the standard material of courses in theoretical physics and are supposed to accompany lectures at the university; thus they are rather condensed. They are supposed to fill one year of teaching. Chapters 5 and 6, in contrast, are written less condensed since this material may not be part of standard lectures and thus could be studied without the help of a university teacher. An appendix on elementary particles lies somewhere in between: It could be a summary of a much more detailed course, or studied without such a course. Illustrations and numerous problems round off this unusual textbook. It will ideally accompany the students all along their course in theoretical physics and prove indispensable in preparing and revising the exams. It is also suited as a reference for teachers or scientists from other disciplines who are interested in the topic |
