TitleTransit When Planets Cross the Sun : When Planets Cross the Sun
Author(s)Maunder, Michael;Moore, Patrick
PublicationLondon, Springer London, 2000.
DescriptionVIII, 164 p. 104 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteAlthough transits of planets across the Sun are rare (only Mercury and Venus orbit the Sun closer than us, and so can transit the Sun's disc) amateur astronomers can observe, record and image other kinds of transit, which are very much more frequent. Transit is in two parts, the first telling the fascinating story of the early scientific expeditions to observe transits. The second part is for practical observers, and explains how to observe transits of all sorts - even transits of aircraft as they fly between the observer and the Sun!

TitleAstronomy with a Budget Telescope
Author(s)Moore, Patrick;Watson, John
PublicationLondon, Springer London, 2003.
DescriptionVIII, 136 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSir Patrick Moore, CBE, FRS has long been the scourge of those people selling low-cost astronomical telescopes via mail-order catalogues and non-specialist stores. Ten years ago the quality was appalling and disappointment would have been almost guaranteed - but times have changed, and having surveyed some the best and worst of today's inexpensive mail-order catalogue and main-street astronomical telescopes Patrick has admitted to being astonished by how good some of them are. Today, the best are now excellent value and useful instruments. Part One of Astronomy With a Mail-order Telescope provides reports on some available models along with detailed and essential hints and tips about what to look for when buying. Part Two describes how best to use the telescope, which celestial objects to observe (with full-page star charts to help find them), what you can expect to see, and how to take and even computer-enhance astronomical photographs

TitleMore Small Astronomical Observatories
Author(s)Moore, Patrick
PublicationLondon, Springer London, 2002.
DescriptionVIII, 248 p : online resource
Abstract NoteA permanent building for any small astronomical telescope is a great asset.?? Comfort, ease of use and above all being able to spend time actually observing instead of setting up the telescope mean that most amateur astronomers dream of having a fixed site. The second collection of- mostly amateur- observatories for small telescopes provides yet more ideas along with a wealth of practical information for anyone thinking of building an observatory

TitlePatrick Moore???s Millennium Yearbook : The View from AD 1001
Author(s)Moore, Patrick;Chapman, Allan
PublicationLondon, Springer London, 2000.
DescriptionXII, 100 p. 37 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteIn a year that will probably be remembered almost as much for books about the millennium as for the turn of 2000 A.D itself, Patrick Moore's Millennium Yearbook celebrates.....well, the wrong millennium! This thoroughly entertaining book - which is for everyone, not just astronomers - contains articles on King Alfred's chronological work, reviews of the new Star Catalogue by the Arab Al-Sufi and the latest edition of Ptolemy's Almagast. And foreshadowing the change to metric units by 1000 years, the book uses arabic numbers instead of Roman - but there is a conversion table if you have trouble with the idea of "zero" and prefer the older system

TitleMoore on Mercury : The Planet and the Missions
Author(s)Moore, Patrick
PublicationLondon, Springer London, 2007.
DescriptionVII, 139 p. 5 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteMercury is one of the more difficult objects for amateur astronomers to observe because of its close proximity to the Sun. For the same reason, it is also one of the most fascinating and strange planets. Mercury is not much larger that our Moon, but orbits the Sun at an average distance of only 58 million km, compared to the Earth???s 150 million km. On its sunlit side, Mercury???s surface temperature can exceed 450C while the night side freezes at ???180C. Amateur astronomers can see Mercury and its ever-changing phases all year, and sometimes watch it transit the Sun ??? the next transit is in November 2006, followed by one in May 2016. In his inimitable, easy-going style, Patrick Moore describes Mercury, the professional astronomers who have observed it over the centuries, amateur observations, and the past, present and future space missions to this extraordinary world
