Abstract Note??It is undoubtedly true that much of the progress in the quant~m theory of matter is due to the remarkable success of the independent particle model (IPM)--especially in describing ground states. However, the accurate experimental results of the last 10 years or so, on a variety of spectroscopic phenomena and chemical processes which involve the Excited State, and the related failure of the IPM to reproduce accurately--in many cases, even qualitatively--the observed data, have sent to theorists a clear message: There is need to create and/or apply general and useful approaches to the many-electron problem of the excited state which go beyond the IPM, treat electron correlation and relativity and explain or predict all relevant physical or chemical information with consistent accuracy. This book contains articles devoted mainly to some of the most important new developments in Quantum Chemistry concerning the theoretical foundations and the computational implementation of many-body approaches to the quantitative and detailed under?? standing of the electronic excited states of atoms, molecules and solids. Abstract NoteThis monograph covers a broad spectrum of topics in the very broad field of gas phase molecular collision dynamics. The Introduction previews each of the four fol?? lowing topics and attempts to sew them together with a common thread. In addition, a brief review of quantum reactive scattering is given there along with some gen?? eral remarks which highlight the difficulties in doing quantum reactive scatter?? ing calculations. The chapters are all written by theoreticians who are, of course, experts in the subjects they have written about. Three chapters, the ones by Secrest, Schatz, and the one by Schinke and Bowman deal with non-reactive atom-molecule scattering. Col?? lectively, they describe nearly the full breadth of scattering methods in use to?? day, from fully quantum mechanical to semiclassical and quasiclassical. The chapter by Baer is the only one dealing with quantum reactive scattering with the additional complexity of the coupling of two potential energy surfaces. The one simplifying feature of the treatment is that the reaction is constrained to be collinear. Overall, this monograph is mainly a review of the recent advances in the field of molecular collision dynamics, with, however, a considerable amount of new material. It is hoped that workers and students in the field will find reading the mono?? graph both enlightening and enjoyable

Abstract NoteThis book is the first volume of a two-volume work, which is an improved version of a preprint [47] published in German. We seek to deduce the funda?? mental concepts of quantum mechanics solely from a description of macroscopic devices. The microscopic systems such as electrons, atoms, etc. must be detected on the basis of the macroscopic behavior of the devices. This detection resembles the detection of the dinosaurs on the basis offossils. In this first volume we develop a general description of macroscopic systems by trajectories in state spaces. This general description is a basis for the special de?? scription of devices consisting of two parts, where the first part is acting on the second. The microsystems are discovered as systems transmitting the action. Axioms which describe general empirical structures of the interactions between the two parts of each device, give rise to a derivation of the Hilbert space structure of quantum mechanics. Possibly, these axioms (and consequently the Hilbert space structure) may fail to describe other realms than the structure of atoms and mole?? cules, for instance the "elementary particles". This book supplements ref. [2]. Both together not only give an extensive foundation of quantum mechanics but also a solution in principle of the measuring problem

Abstract NoteThis book is an updated and modified translation of the Russian edition of 1984. In the present edition, certain sections have been abridged (in particular, Sects. 6.1 and 8.3) and the bibliography has been expanded. There are more detailed discus?? sions of the group properties of integrable systems of equations of mathematical physics (Sect. 3.4) and of the Riemannian problem in the context of the infinite?? dimensional internal symmetry groups of these systems of equations. There is an extended discussion of the reasons for the acceleration and retardation of pulsars in connection with more recent achievements of X-ray astronomy. Part of the material of Chap. 8 of the Russian edition has been included in Chap. 7; thus the number of chapters has been reduced to seven. S. Chandrasekhar set for me an example of brilliant analytical penetration into the essence of physical problems, and my book touches on his work in many in?? stances. The results of modem quantum theories of strong fields are not presented, but they can be found in the fundamental monographs Quantwn Electrodynamics of Strong Fields by W. Greiner, B. Muller, J. Rafelski (Sprioger-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg, New York 1985) and Quantwn Effects in Intense External Fields [in Russian] by A. Grib, S. Mamaev, W. Mostepanenko (Energoatomizdat, Moscow 1988).
