Title | Pathways through an eclectic universe: Proceedings of a conference held at Santiago del Teide, tenerife, Spain 23 - 27 April 2007 to celebrate John Bechman's 40 years in astrophysics |
Author(s) | J. H. Knapen (ed.);T. J. Mahoney (ed.);A. Vazdekis (ed.) |
Publication | San Francisco, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2008. |
Description | xxv, 588p. |
Series | (Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series) |
Abstract Note | This book contains the proceedings of a conference, held on 23-27 April in Tenerife, to discuss recent progress on star formation in galaxies. Presentations took into account advances in related areas such as the structure, dynamics, and evolution of galaxies, their stellar and dark matter components, central black holes as clues to their histories, the physics of the interstellar medium, and the feedback on all spatial scales between star formation and the host galaxy. This volume contains more than a hundred papers on these topics including invited reviews, invited and contributed talks, poster presentations, and two panel discussion sessions. These articles provide an in-depth assessment of the current state of the field, relate observations with theory, and link detailed studies of star formation in our own Galaxy with cosmology. |

Title | Frontiers of astrophysics: A celebration of NRAO'S 50 th anniversary: Proceedings of a symposium held at National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA 18 - 21 June 2007 |
Author(s) | Alan H. Bridle (ed.);James J. Condon (ed.);Gareth C. Hunt (ed.) |
Publication | San Francisco, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2008. |
Description | xx, 390p. |
Series | (Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series) |
Abstract Note | In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the NRAO hosted a science symposium highlighting the most important questions that can be addressed by astronomers. The universe is a unique laboratory yielding historical data on the creation of the universe, the formation of the first stars and galaxies, the production of the elements, the assembly of molecules and the building blocks of life in interstellar space, how and where planets form, and possible changes in fundamental physical constants on cosmological time scales. This âlaboratoryâ contains black holes, neutron stars, and gravitational radiation for studying extreme gravity and extremely dense matter. It is filled with the mysterious dark energy and dark matter that control the expansion and destiny of the universe, and whole nature is a critical unsolved problem for physics. This symposium brought together leading scientists to address the most important questions in these areas, the major contributions to astronomy enabled by NRAO instrumentsâpast, present, and futureâand to suggest future directions for research involving radio observations and techniques. |

Title | Gas and galaxy evolution: A conference in honor of the 20th anniversary of the VLA : Proceedings of a conference held in Socorro, New Mexico, USA 21-24 May 2000 |
Author(s) | J.E. Hibbard (ed.);M.P. Rupen (ed.);J.H. van Gorkom (ed.) |
Publication | California, Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 2001. |
Description | xxxix, 887p. |
Series | (Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series; 240) |
Contents Note | October 10, 1980 was the dedication of the Very Large Array. It was at the time the largest, most sensitive, and most flexible radio telescope by far. To celebrate twenty years of science with the Very Large Array, a conference was held in Socorro in May 2000. The theme of the conference was the role of gas in galaxy evolution, starting out in the early universe, continuing through recombination, galaxy formation and re-ionization and ending with the local universe, including a panel discussion on the nature of high-velocity clouds. |
