TitleStructured Singular Light Fields
Author(s)Otte, Eileen
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXV, 170 p. 63 illus., 60 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteStructured singular light is an ubiquitous phenomenon. It is not only created when light refracts at a water surface but can also be found in the blue daytime sky. Such light fields include a spatially varying amplitude, phase, or polarization, enabling the occurrence of optical singularities. As structurally stable units of the light field, these singularities are particularly interesting since they determine its topology. In this excellent book, the author presents a pioneering study of structured singular light, thereby contributing many original approaches. Especially in the field of polarization and its rich number of different types of singularities the book defines and drives a completely new field. The work demonstrates how to control complex polarization singularity networks and their propagation. Additionally, the author pioneers tightly focusing vectorial beams, also developing an urgently needed detection scheme for three-dimensional nanoscale polarization structures. She also studies classical spatial entanglement using structured light, introducing entanglement beating and paraxial spin-orbit-coupling. The book is hallmarked by its comprehensive and thorough way of describing a plethora of different approaches to structure light by amplitude, phase and polarization, as well as the important role of optical singularities.

TitleProblems and solutions on optics
Author(s)Swee Cheng Lim (ed.);Choy Heng Lai (ed.);Leong Chuan Kwek (ed.)
Edition2nd ed.
PublicationSingapore, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2019.
Description225p.
Series(Major American Universities Ph.D. Qualifying Questions and Solutions - Physics)
Abstract NoteThis volume is a compilation of carefully selected questions at the PhD qualifying exam level, including many actual questions from Columbia University, University of Chicago, MIT, State University of New York at Buffalo, Princeton University, University of Wisconsin and the University of California at Berkeley over a twenty-year period. Topics covered in this book include geometrical optics, quantum optics, and wave optics. This latest edition has been updated with more problems and solutions, bringing the total to over 200 problems. The original problems have been modernized, and outdated questions removed, placing emphasis on those that rely on calculations. The problems range from fundamental to advanced in a wide range of topics on optics, easily enhancing the student's knowledge through workable exercises. Simple-to-solve problems play a useful role as a first check of the student's level of knowledge whereas difficult problems will challenge the student's capacity on finding the solutions.

TitleImaging optics
Author(s)Joseph Braat;Peter Torok
PublicationCambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2019.
Descriptionxii, 973p.
Abstract NoteThis comprehensive and self-contained text presents the fundamentals of optical imaging from the viewpoint of both ray and wave optics, within a single volume. Comprising three distinct parts, it opens with an introduction to electromagnetic theory, including electromagnetic diffraction problems and how they can be solved with the aid of standard numerical methods such as RCWA or FDTD. The second part is devoted to the basic theory of geometrical optics and the study of optical aberrations inherent in imaging systems, including large-scale telescopes and high-resolution projection lenses. A detailed overview of state-of-the-art optical system design provides readers with the necessary tools to successfully use commercial optical design software. The final part explores diffraction theory and concludes with vectorial wave propagation, image formation and image detection in high-aperture imaging systems. The wide-ranging perspective of this important book provides researchers and professionals with a comprehensive and rigorous treatise on the theoretical and applied aspects of optical imaging.

TitleEngineering optics with MATLAB
Author(s)Ting - Chung Poon;Taegeun Kim
Edition2nd
PublicationSingapore, World Scientific, 2018.
Descriptionxiii, 309p
Abstract NoteThis invaluable second edition provides more in-depth discussions and examples in various chapters. Based largely on the authors' own in-class lectures as well as researchers in the area, the comprehensive textbook serves two purposes. The first introduces some traditional topics such as matrix formalism of geometrical optics, wave propagation and diffraction, and some fundamental background on Fourier optics. The second presents the essentials of acousto-optics and electro-optics, and provides the students with experience in modeling the theory and applications using a commonly used software tool MATLAB.
