TitleApplied Data Communications and Networks
Author(s)Buchanan, B
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1996.
DescriptionXX, 362 p. 70 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThe usage of data communications and computer networks are ever in?? creasing. It is one of the few technological areas which brings benefits to most of the countries and the peoples of the world. Without it many industries could not exist. It is the objective of this book to discuss data communications in a readable form that students and professionals all over the world can understand. As much as possible the text uses dia?? grams to illustrate key points. Most currently available data communications books take their view?? point from either a computer scientists top-down approach or from an electronic engineers bottom-up approach. This book takes a practical ap?? proach and supports it with a theoretical background to create a textbook which can be used by electronic engineers, computer engineers, computer scientists and industry professionals. It discusses most of the current and future key data communications technologies, including: ??? Data Communications Standards and Models; ??? Local Area Networks (Ethernet, Token Ring and FDDI); ??? Transmission Control ProtocollInternet Protocol (TCPIIP); ??? High-level Data Link Control (HDLC); ??? X.25 Packet-switching; ??? Asynchronous Communications (RS-232) and Modems; ??? Pulse Coded Modulation (PCM); ??? Integrated Digital Services Network (ISDN); ??? Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM); ??? Error Control; ??? X-Windows. The chapters are ordered in a possible structure for the presentation of the material and have not been sectioned into data communications areas

TitleWavelet Basics
Author(s)Chan, Y. T
PublicationNew York, NY, Springer US, 1995.
DescriptionIX, 134 p : online resource
Abstract NoteSince the study of wavelets is a relatively new area, much of the research coming from mathematicians, most of the literature uses terminology, concepts and proofs that may, at times, be difficult and intimidating for the engineer. Wavelet Basics has therefore been written as an introductory book for scientists and engineers. The mathematical presentation has been kept simple, the concepts being presented in elaborate detail in a terminology that engineers will find familiar. Difficult ideas are illustrated with examples which will also aid in the development of an intuitive insight. Chapter 1 reviews the basics of signal transformation and discusses the concepts of duals and frames. Chapter 2 introduces the wavelet transform, contrasts it with the short-time Fourier transform and clarifies the names of the different types of wavelet transforms. Chapter 3 links multiresolution analysis, orthonormal wavelets and the design of digital filters. Chapter 4 gives a tour d'horizon of topics of current interest: wavelet packets and discrete time wavelet transforms, and concludes with applications in signal processing

TitleMaximum-Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Science and Engineering : Foundations
Author(s)Erickson, G;Smith, C.R
PublicationDordrecht, Springer Netherlands, 1988.
DescriptionX, 314 p. 17 illus : online resource
Abstract NoteThis volume has its origin in the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Workshops on and Bayesian Methods in Applied Statistics", held at "Maximum-Entropy the University of Wyoming, August 5-8, 1985, and at Seattle University, August 5-8, 1986, and August 4-7, 1987. It was anticipated that the proceedings of these workshops would be combined, so most of the papers were not collected until after the seventh workshop. Because all of the papers in this volume are on foundations, it is believed that the con?? tents of this volume will be of lasting interest to the Bayesian community. The workshop was organized to bring together researchers from different fields to critically examine maximum-entropy and Bayesian methods in science and engineering as well as other disciplines. Some of the papers were chosen specifically to kindle interest in new areas that may offer new tools or insight to the reader or to stimulate work on pressing problems that appear to be ideally suited to the maximum-entropy or Bayesian method. A few papers presented at the workshops are not included in these proceedings, but a number of additional papers not presented at the workshop are included. In particular, we are delighted to make available Professor E. T. Jaynes' unpublished Stanford University Microwave Laboratory Report No. 421 "How Does the Brain Do Plausible Reasoning?" (dated August 1957). This is a beautiful, detailed tutorial on the Cox-Polya-Jaynes approach to Bayesian probability theory and the maximum-entropy principle

TitleExperimental astrophysics
Author(s)Elia Stefano Battistelli
PublicationBristol, Institute of Physics Publishing, 2021.
Abstract NoteWe are now living in the multimessenger era in which often weak and elusive astrophysical phenomena need to be studied using different and orthogonal probes and information carriers in order to be fully understood. This book is designed to give advanced undergraduate students a description of the most popular techniques and instrumentation employed in modern astrophysics. Focusing on electromagnetic radiation and its detection spanning from radio- to X-ray wavelengths, it gives a general description of astrophysical observables, such as flux, brightness, throughput, and magnitude. It describes general concepts about geometrical and physical optics at different wavelengths, in an astronomical context, including the concepts of lenses, mirrors, antennas, telescopes, the focal plane, angular resolution, the field of view, and the diffraction limit. The origin of noise and the extraction of a signal from it is also covered, including noise reduction techniques such as filtering, amplification, as well as cryogenic techniques. The theory of signals and the theorems related to digital electronics are also introduced. A set of student laboratory activities is included to illustrate the concepts covered in the book.

TitleIntroduction to signal processing, instrumentation, and control: An Integrative Approach
Author(s)Joseph Bentsman
PublicationNew Jersey, World Scientific Publishing Co. Pvt. Ltd., 2016.
Descriptionxvii, 753p.
Abstract NoteThis book stems from a unique and highly effective approach in introducing signal processing, instrumentation, diagnostics, filtering, control, and system integration. It presents the interactive industrial grade software testbed of mold oscillator that captures the mold motion distortion induced by coupling of the electro-hydraulic actuator nonlinearity with the resonance of the mold oscillator beam assembly. The testbed is then employed as a virtual lab to generate input-output data records that permit unraveling and refining complex behavior of the actual production system through merging dynamics, signal processing, instrumentation, and control into a coherent problem-solving package.
