Abstract NoteThis book introduces the foundations and fundamentals of electronic circuits. It broadly covers the subjects of circuit analysis, as well as analog and digital electronics. It features discussion of essential theorems required for simplifying complex circuits and illustrates their applications under different conditions. Also, in view of the emerging potential of Laplace transform method for solving electrical networks, a full chapter is devoted to the topic in the book. In addition, it covers the physics and technical aspects of semiconductor diodes and transistors, as well as discrete-time digital signals, logic gates, and combinational logic circuits. Each chapter is presented as complete as possible, without the reader having to refer to any other book or supplementary material. Featuring short self-assessment questions distributed throughout, along with a large number of solved examples, supporting illustrations, and chapter-end problems and solutions, this book is ideal for any physics undergraduate lecture course on electronic circuits. Its use of clear language and many real-world examples make it an especially accessible book for students unfamiliar or unsure about the subject matter

TitleA Digital Signal Processor for Particle Detectors : Design, Verification and Testing
Author(s)Velure, Arild
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXIX, 157 p. 57 illus., 30 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteTo cope with the new running conditions in the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, a new integrated circuit named SAMPA has been created that can process 32 analogue channels, convert them to digital, perform filtering and compression, and transmit the data on high speed links to the data acquisition system. The main purpose of this work is to specify, design, test and verify the digital signal processing part of the SAMPA device to accommodate the requirements of the detectors involved. Innovative solutions have been employed to reduce the bandwidth required by the detectors, as well as adaptations to ease data handling later in the processing chain. The new SAMPA device was built to replace two existing circuits, in addition to reducing the current consumption, and doubling the amount of processing channels. About 50000 of the devices will be installed in the Time Projection Chamber and Muon Chamber detectors in the ALICE experiment

TitleIonospheric Delay Investigation and Forecasting
Author(s)Elmunim, N. A;Abdullah, M
PublicationSingapore, Springer Nature Singapore, 2021.
DescriptionXIV, 100 p. 43 illus., 40 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book highlights ionospheric delay investigation and forecasting using GPS-TEC measurements in the equatorial region. The ionospheric delay error is the main source of error and a major concern for GPS applications as it corrupts the positioning and time transfer results. In the equatorial region, the variations of the total electron content (TEC) and the ionospheric delay are recognized to be high when compared with other regions such as mid-latitude and high latitude. The investigation and forecasting of trans-ionospheric propagation errors are essential for precise measurement and further contribute valuable information to satellite and space probe navigation, space geodesy, radio astronomy and other applications

TitleThe Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence : Proceedings of the 2nd SETI-INAF Meeting 2019
Author(s)Montebugnoli, Stelio;Melis, Andrea;Antonietti, Nicol??
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2021.
DescriptionXVIII, 135 p. 57 illus., 53 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book presents the latest knowledge of the newly discovered Earth-like exoplanets and reviews improvements in both radio and optical SETI. A key aim is to stimulate fresh discussion on algorithms that will be of high value in this extremely complicated search. Exoplanets resembling Earth could well be able to sustain life and support the evolution of technological civilizations, but to date, all searches for such life forms have proved fruitless. The failings of SETI observations are well recognized, and a new search approach is necessary. In this book, different detection algorithms that exploit state-of-the-art, low-cost, and extremely fast multiprocessors are examined and compared. Novel methods such as the agnostic entropy and high-sensitivity blind signal extraction algorithms should represent a quantum leap forward in SETI. The book is of interest to all researchers in the field and hopefully stimulates significant progress in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence

TitleDynamic Systems Models : New Methods of Parameter and State Estimation
Author(s)Boguslavskiy, Josif A;Borodovsky, Mark
PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXX, 201 p : online resource
Abstract NoteThis monograph is an exposition of a novel method for solving inverse problems, a method of parameter estimation for time series data collected from simulations of real experiments. These time series might be generated by measuring the dynamics of aircraft in flight, by the function of a hidden Markov model used in bioinformatics or speech recognition or when analyzing the dynamics of asset pricing provided by the nonlinear models of financial mathematics. Dynamic Systems Models demonstrates the use of algorithms based on polynomial approximation which have weaker requirements than already-popular iterative methods. Specifically, they do not require a first approximation of a root vector and they allow non-differentiable elements in the vector functions being approximated. The text covers all the points necessary for the understanding and use of polynomial approximation from the mathematical fundamentals, through algorithm development to the application of the method in, for instance, aeroplane flight dynamics or biological sequence analysis. The technical material is illustrated by the use of worked examples and methods for training the algorithms are included. Dynamic Systems Models provides researchers in aerospatial engineering, bioinformatics and financial mathematics (as well as computer scientists interested in any of these fields) with a reliable and effective numerical method for nonlinear estimation and solving boundary problems when carrying out control design. It will also be of interest to academic researchers studying inverse problems and their solution

PublicationCham, Springer International Publishing, 2016.
DescriptionXVI, 274 p. 120 illus., 88 illus. in color : online resource
Abstract NoteThis book offers an essential compendium of astronomical high-resolution techniques. Recent years have seen considerable developments in such techniques, which are critical to advances in many areas of astronomy. As reflected in the book, these techniques can be divided into direct methods, interferometry, and reconstruction methods, and can be applied to a huge variety of astrophysical systems, ranging from planets, single stars and binaries to active galactic nuclei, providing angular resolution in the micro- to tens of milliarcsecond scales. Written by experts in their fields, the chapters cover adaptive optics, aperture masking imaging, spectra disentangling, interferometry, lucky imaging, Roche tomography, imaging with interferometry, interferometry of AGN, AGN reverberation mapping, Doppler- and magnetic imaging of stellar surfaces, Doppler tomography, eclipse mapping, Stokes imaging, and stellar tomography. This book is intended to enable a next generation of astronomers to apply high-resolution techniques. It informs readers on how to achieve the best angular resolution in the visible and near-infrared regimes from diffraction-limited to micro-arcsecond scales
